Kudos to the Staff and Owner!

Submitted Tuesday, January 31, 2012 - 2:39pm [Take-out]

Last week, the day I went to pick up some Bonchaz buns was the day that it was pouring rain! Unfortunately, I had to bring my baby with me; luckily, he was sleeping and covered up in his stroller.

I wasn't able to go inside since I couldn't wheel him in due to the stairs at the entrance. I was trying to get the staff's attention by knocking on their take-out window but they didn't hear/see me. Fortunately, there was a gentleman who had just came out... I asked him if he was able to let the staff know that I needed service at the window since I couldn't leave my baby outside. He went back in and went behind the service counter and opened up the window for me. He told me that he works there but he must have just finished his shift, but he let the owner know that I was waiting outside. The owner quickly came over and apologized and offered to help bring the stroller inside but I declined as I had to be on my way. He got my order together quickly and apologized again!

For a small business like Bonchaz, there isn't much they can do in terms of accessibility since they're in an old building. But it's little things like their exceptional service... and delish bonchaz buns that will keep me coming back for more!

A BIG thank you to the owner and the other man who helped me quickly while I was in the torrential downpour...

Big disappointment

Went out of my way to try the Bonchaz brioche pastries. Wanted the 6 pack for $10.50. Ordered 2 chocolate, 2 apple, 1 walnut and 1 green tea. Out of chocolate and apple. This is at 2:00 pm so I asked when would chocolate or apple be available. Cashier/server was clueless and made no attempt to find out. Ended up with 3 walnut and 3 green tea. Tried them as soon as I got home and was disappointed. Better off going to a Chinese bakery and getting similar at half the price.

Makes a light night snack

After hearing about this place from a blog friend, I checked out this little joint after dinner to see what the fuss is all about these baked brioches. For now they are serving The Original Brioche, Banana and Walnut Brichoe and my personal fav French Truffle Brioche. And for $1.75 you get a piping hot freshly baked light as air brioche which literally melted in my mouth. I'd have to say this is best eaten as soon as purchased as that impact it made after my first bite was unreal. My french truffle brioche had a 70% cocoa filling which had the perfect sweetness and richness. I love this stuff! And I had to order a coffee to go along with my piece of heaven and to my surprise, my coffee priced as $1.75 for now came served in a French press carafe which was such a nice touch, I was floored, impressed, all the good stuff. I hope to return for their soon to be introduced vanilla ice cream flavour brioche. If you can't decide which one to order, they kindly let you sample them all. Service was impeccable, friendly smiley people all around. The room seems a little bare but that could be because they are still new but as soon as you bite into these brioches, you will be a fan as I am.

Great sandwiches, bread and pastries, great price but don't try the soups!

Picked up lunch from Bonchaz today and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sandwiches. I ordered 2 lunch combos which includes a sandwich, soup and a brioche pastry.

We ordered:

- smoked salmon sandwich - v. good
- brie and avocado sandwich - v. good
- beef & barley soup - not good
- tomato basil - not good
- banana walnut brioche - v. good
- chocolate truffle brioche. - v. good

I highly recommend the sandwiches because they are made really great bread, tastes like a foccocia type, made in house and the flavour combinations are really good, of the ones we tried anyway. Also they didn't skimp on the salmon or the brie, they were maybe a little too generous. I had to take out a few pieces of brie, eventhough I love brie! the sandwiches would be better if they'd add a bit more tomato and cucumber. Otherwise overall really great quality for the price.

Whatever you do, do not order the soups! I tried them both and they were not good at all.

I agree with a previous reviewer that the pastries are best eaten right away. There are a few different flavours. The banana walnut had a banana type filling and the chocolate truffle had a chocolate filling, I would imagine that the others would have a filling. However, the "original" pastry does not.

Overall a great place for great sandwiches that start at $4.95 and delicious buns to go with your coffee.

Oh and when I walked into this place for a coffee before 10am on Tuesday I got a free pastry! i don't know if this is a regular promo during the week but a free pastry with coffee?! can't beat that.
