Bo Kong is a Buddhist restaurant with a seemingly endless selection of tofu and gluten based fare.
I love it here. The food is yummy, the staff are obliging, and the value is great because the portions are big enough to split if you get soup.
Try the sweet and sour pinapple delight, the black pepper "steak" or the hot and sour soup. Total comfort food!
The overly bright florescent lights wreck any atmosphere but it's still a good exerience.
Bo Kong is probably in my top three favourite vegetarian restaurants in Vancouver. But Bo Kong isn't just for vegetarians: besides the faux meats, there's a large selection of vegetables, noodles, soups, and other traditional Chinese fare. If you're going for the first time I would recommend the Pineapple Delight (think Sweet & Sour Pork but veggie), Spinach Noodles, the Orange Cutlet, and the Wonton Soup. A word of caution if you're feeling brave: some items on the menu are definitely less Western-friendly than the items I listed just now. So unless you're very open-minded I would keep away from the more unusual foods. If you have any questions, the staff (who are very considerate and kind) should be able to help you and provide recommendations. Enjoy!
Bo Kong is one of the few vegetarian restaurants in Vancouver. There are more in Richmond..but that's out of my way. My boyfriend and I came here once to try out their food, after hearing about it from another vegetarian coworker and my Buddhist friend.
They have a really wide selection of vegetarian foods, with fake seafoods and chicken. We had the pineapple delight, with house special fried rice, and a hairy melon vermecilli pot I think. Really really good. My boyfriend loved the pineapple delight. Love the food here.
It looks like your typical Chinese restaurant, just more Buddhist like. It's pretty much priced the same as a regular Chinese restaurant too, but I would say the portions at Bo Kong are a bit smaller. The service wasn't very good though. Even through my coworker, he had said that they always seem to be understaffed. We had to wait a while for our order.. and for them to pack up when we were leaving. As well, the waiter was very brief. Biggest problem was asking for a glass of water, it took THREE TRIES, with two different waiters/waitress. Very annoying.
But other than that, will definitely go back for food.
They have amazing vegetarian food at the richmond and vancouver locations! This is my favourite restaurant, especially because its all vegetarian (though you wouldn't know it since everything tastes sooo good!). I've always had good service and the staff have suggested some great dishes. If you like chinese food, whether you're vegetarian or not, you'll love this place!
This is my second time dining at Bo Kong Restaurant. The first time the service was just ok, but the second time the service was "HORRIBLE" and i mean HORRIBLE. The waitress was very rude to us. We said we needed a couple of mintues to look at the menu, but she just stood right there and forcing us to order. After the meal we had some food left over, so we decided to pack it to go. We also ordered some food to go. It took 10 minutes for them to give us a to go box which we asked for it 3 times. It seems like they dont even care about our table. Once we had everything packed, we ask for the bill. We asked for the bill 3 times and no one bought the bill over to us. We were sitting there for more than 10 minutes. Someof the server was chatting with other servers. When the bill came i didnt even have enough time to look at it she took it away from me. Then i was pissed off already, so i went to the counter to get my bill. She printed me another bill which was $10 more than the first bill she gave us. Then i was like this bill is not correct and she knows it not correct. I'm like we only ate 3 dishes here and the other 6 dishes we ordered to go. The restaurant clearly states that to go is 10% off. The first bill she gave it was 10% off the to go orders. The second bill she just added everything together. During the whole dining experience she was very rude and didnt even say thank you. For 3 people we ate almost $100 of food for lunch. Spending $100 and getting this kind of service. Seriously, this is really poor customer service.
Bo Kong is a great place for vegetarians.
The dumplings are great! One bite of them and I feel like I'm in heaven. The ambiance is a bit old but the service is O.K and is worth my money! I wish that they would also have more server and cooks and maybe some new wallpaper, carpets, chairs and tables.
This is the 2nd time I've been to this restaurant after many years, and have to admit the food is not as good/flavourful as the 1st time.
It was so cold in the restaurant the Thursday night that we went, we should've asked them to turn on the heat or something.
We ordered quite a few dishes, some were better than others, but the flavour of the dishes were not that great, especially at the prices some of them were!
Service is not as good as before either, the hosts and waiters are not very attentive.
Don't think we will come back to this restaurant again, I had wanted my vegetarian friend to try out this restaurant, but I was disappointed by the food.
Went there for dim-sum.
The lady server didn't say a word except indifferent nodding to confirm how many we are. She kept totally silent the whole time until we asked her about the dishes we didn't get after more than 30 mins of waiting.
We ordered 7 dishes and got the first two relatively quickly. But we noticed the servers delivered the food to the table next to us both times and got them back to us.
We strongly believe the waitress entered our table wrong with the order.
Both the waitress and manager dropped by us twice; first to ask if we are ready to order, second to ask if we are finished, at both times we were STILL waiting for the other 4 dishes out of 6.
We had to grab them again to confirm our order ourselves and waited 10 more minutes to get the rest of the food.
Both waitress and manager did not say a word of apology or similar sort of, except a lame excuse for why it takes so long for them to prepare for the food.
Had to call them twice to replace tea.
Had to ask them twice for the bill.
I understand that with that many people in the middle of the peak lunch time, the service can get a little slower. We experienced that all the time.
The food was ok. But the way they dealt with their mistakes, their indifferent, uncaring attitude is what made me so upset.
We are a long-time regular customer at Richmond's bo kong. It's so different there.
I wouldn't go back to this one again.
The food here is delicious, but I think you need to know how to order.
If you have special dietary restrictions, you can ask them to not add any MSG and skip out on the cornstarch (many Asian dishes have cornstarch). The server I had the first time told me that we can make these requests; however, the second time I went and did make those requests, the server (a lady) did not fulfill the requests and I stlil had MSG in my food.
Still, this is great for vegetarian fare, and there are plenty of healthy options for the very health-conscious.
Service can really be in the pits somedays, but one of the male servers is especially friendly and helpful. He's given me so many tips on preparing dishes at home, and even suggestions of new vegetables (like kabocha!) and how to prepare them at home.
Atmosphere is your standard Chiense restaurant -- nothing spectacular.
We tried Bo Kong for the third time recently, and won't be going back (kept going back in the hopes that if we ordered something different from our last visit we'd discover what all the good reviews were about... not so much unfortunately.)
Our experiences there:
The service was fast but impersonal.
The food was greasy, salty, and seemed like it relied on filler (i.e. cheap carbs, bean sprouts, dried mushrooms/fungus) rather than a variety of high-quality fresh vegetables.
The prices were not particularly expensive, but the lack of reliance on fresh veggies in most dishes in a vegetarian restaurant is a bit strange. Cost/prep time cutting?
The ambiance is pretty standard - relatively clean, nothing outstanding.
I've had many people recommend Bo Kong as the best in Vancouver, but the people recommending it had not tried out the other solid options - Bodhi Choi Heung on Fraser or Veggie Bunch buffet in Richmond. I'd recommend people try out those places before they "commit" themselves to Bo Kong for their daily/weekly/monthly/whatever veg Chinese fix.
This is one of 2 Bo Kong Restaurants. It is often quite full but we have never had to wait, and one can make reservations for very busy times. Staff are courteous and try to honour special requests, like using soft tofu instead of deep-fried. There is a huge variety of choice, and even non-vegetarians can be satisfied. The "sizzling steak" which I think is made of gluten, is really good. Other recommended ones are the sweet and sour dish, eggplant and tofu, and the thick spinach soup and wonton soup. These are all quite popular. Every time we go, we see new things to try and are usually pleased. Even apparently without onior or garlic, the food is very tasty.
The Richmond location has more little things to buy (like candied nuts) and seems a bit larger. The menus are the same. Overall, both Bo Kongs are wonderful and also are not too expensive.
I love the Bo Kong. and I keep going back . I'm not even vegetarian but I could eat here at least once a week forever .
The food is so tasty . My fave is the Tofuskin Rolls in Black Bean Sauce, a truly delicious dish . But there are dozens of other great choices and prices are very reasonable . Dim sum is also good and staff is very helpful and friendly .
The staff is courteous and kind and always willing to make a recommendation. The food is prepared fresh (yes, even the sauces) to order; so don’t be surprised if it takes more than 15 minutes to get your food.
My only complaint is the menu. If they would work on a quality translation of what they offer and maybe better and more pictures, I would eat here again. The food is good but you will have no idea what you are ordering and the staff and owner can not explain it in English. It is sad that a restaurant this size with a huge menu will miss so much business due to poor language translation. It could be a great choice for vegans but the menu will leave you frustrated and confused.
My boyfriend and I aren't vegetarians, but we thought we'd try out this place just for a change.
We had their thick corn & tofu soup and the three-mushroom with vegetables on rice. Both were excellent, and we'll definitely go back for the soup.
The service was great and our waiter was very attentive, even with a large table nearby.
The only negative comment I can make is that the restaurant's decor is very dull. The walls are white and bare, and the tables have no decoration.
Ordered the Fried Rice Noodle, Tofu and veggie seafood pot, soup, and the veggie appie. After finishing our meal, we figure we missed the green veggie. Other than a few carrot slices and few shrew of green peppers in the rice noodle, all others are tofu or soy product. I wish they would put a few more pieces of green veggies like bok choy, broccoli, etc. It's summer time, it must be cheaper to put on more fresh vegetables. In terms of taste, the fried rice noodle is very hard. There is not much favor in it. Same as the Tofu pot. The complimentry desert of red bean soup is nice, but too sweet for most people.
The ambiance is pretty good for a Chinese restaurant. It is very clean.
I HIGHLY recommend the Bo Kong. I’ve been eating there for over 6 years. I think it’s one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Canada.
The food is remarkable. There are so many delicious dishes. I recommend the standby favourites: The Beancurd Rolls in Black Bean Sauce, the Special Fried Shitake mushrooms and the Spicy Green Beans. I always bring several people with me when I go so that we can get a variety of dishes (at $8-$10 each it’s easier on the wallet). The dim sum is also great though it pays to ask the server for recommendations if you aren’t familiar with dim sum.
The staff is courteous and kind and always willing to make a recommendation. The food is prepared fresh (yes, even the sauces) to order; so don’t be surprised if it takes more than 15 minutes to get your food.
You have to try this place. I’ve been to both locations (Richmond and Main Street) and they are consistent.
After hearing some good things about Bo Kong, I just had to try it myself with a friend.
It's been a while since I had good "gluten", a staple found in the buddhist diet, and we ordered a small sample as a starter. The fascinating thing about gluten is that it tries its best to resemble meat..but its far from it. If you don't mind the soggy, cold, and gummy texture of it, and you're starving, gluten can serve its purpose as nourishment for the Vegan. My favorite gluten are the sweet and tangy red ones that look similar to Chinese BBQ pork....
We had the "Sweet and Sour Pineapple Delight", Bo Kong's iteration of the Sweet and Sour Pork that is so ominous at many Chinese Restaurants. The recipe is essentially identical ... however, instead of pork, you get crispy deep fried cubes of a tofu substance with a savory-like flavor. The texture is incredible and if I held my nose, I could've sworn I was biting into crispy pork; however, the flavoring of the pork-substitute was a bit off, and not to my exact liking. Still, this is something that Chinese-food loving Vegans should totally check out.
Next, we had the "Vegetarian Stir Fry in Nest" - assorted vegetables cut in bite size pieces stir fried with a light clear sauce, cubed vegetarian ham that had the texture of spam (in a good way), in a deep-fried taro threaded nest, surrounded by blanched brocolli. The flavors were light, and I enjoyed this one.
Service was fine. The only problem I had was the time it took for us to get our change...I don't care how big or small of a tip you deserve, thats up to me - I need my change ASAP please! But anyways, minor complaint I suppose.
There are so many items on the Bo Kong Menu and it was really hard to choose...I will come back out of pure curiosity to see how the chef could possibly make a Vegetarian imitation of a "Juicy Chicken" tasty....or a "Steak" for that matter.
I do not like carpet in a Restaurant, and ambience seems to be a little old. Service was good, not fast but good.
Food is incredible, to be a vegetarian based chinnese food. is well made, good portions and well priced.
I have had dim-sum and dinner here a couple of times at both locations in Richmond and in Vancouver. The food has been consistant at each location so far. the dim-sum is very unique and not greasy as regular dim-sum. dinner is also very good with a great variety of choices. They have a wide variety of meat 'alternative' dishes (looks, smells and tastes like meat, but all made with soy, mushrooms and veggies) In some dishes, you would swear your were eating meat! I would recommend to try the ginger rice (nice and salty/gingery with bits of crunchy gai-lan mixed in the rice), the deep fried taro (although is a bit bland, stilll very good, too bad they don't have worchestire sauce) and another deep fried goodie is the enoki mushroom and seaweed wrap. We keep ordering the same dishes (as that is what we are craving) but seeing what other tables order, it all looks and smells GREAT! even if you're not vegetarian (like my husband) you will not miss the meat.
