We went there at lunch time on a weekday and the restaurant was about half full. There was only one waitress, a very cheerful and energetic one. I was impressed with the fast and efficient service. Food was OK, not particularly impressive. I have had better spaghetti with meat sauce at other places, but if I am in the same area again, I won't mind going there again.
I'm going to do my best to try and keep this relatively short... I could really go on and on about this dive.
My Wife and I ordered a lunch that we thought would be relatively safe...oops. I ordered the Hawaiian burger and she had a clubhouse sandwich with lentil soup. First, the burger: The patty was what you'd find in a school cafeteria...right out of the box frozen. The first bite took me way back, I almost spit it right out. After forcing myself to swallow I finally got the waitresses attention (5 minutes later). She asked if everything was alright. Well, no I said. The burger patty was frozen and it's terrible and dry. She asked if I wanted to order something else. Hesitantly I said yes. She brought me a menu and returned after about 5 minutes again and took my "safe" order of a Rueben sandwich and the lentil soup. Back to my Wife's meal now. Her Clubhouse (as the waitress originally explained it - as obviously it's an issue) came without either chicken or turkey...that's a first, but whatever. Really what she got was a BLT with ham. Well, the soup was ok...maybe it was out of a big ol' can or a bag? She only attempted half the sandwich (I'll explain below) and finished the soup. I ate most of my Rueben as the meat was ok, and the sauerkraut and ample mustard took away from any other flavours. After we paid I was going to say that we wouldn't be back, but I don't think that the waitress would have cared so why bother right?!
Oh, the ambiance...next to us sat a nice older couple that kept asking her husband, "what's his (me) problem...why's he sending that burger back? What's wrong with him?". Excuse me, but we're right next to you...we can hear you!! GEEZ! Oh, and half way through my Wife's meal, he politely blew a couple uncovered sneezes right at our table...That's why my Wife only ate half her sandwich. My second meal hadn't even arrived (about 30 minutes after we entered), so I was safe...whew! A pleasant little hole in the wall that we will never go back to again. EVER!!
My husband and I dropped in on a Saturday night thinking it must be good as it has been in business so long. Neither of us had been there before.
WHAT A MISTAKE!
The waitress wanted to seat us right by the bathroom doors at a tiny table. We chose a different table.
We ordered a large Greek salad to share while we decided what to have for dinner.
I stuck to water, my partner had a pint of whatever beer was on tap.
The Salad was ridiculous. Mostly green peppers. An insipid dressing that tasted like low quality oil with no flavor at all.
A few tiny slices of onion, an under-ripe tasteless tomato, unpeeled cucumbers and 5 olives. (we counted them) The feta cheese was not feta at all. It was white and it was shredded but it was tasteless and certainly not feta.
This was a $14.00 SALAD!
The salad was so bad that we decided not to waste any more time or money there and did not order any dinner.
The bill came to $21.00 for a bad salad and a pint. The only thing good about the salad was there was not too much of it.
If you hate to cook and can't put any effort into it why are you even bothering???? Get a job you like.
Needless to say we will not return and advise you to go elsewhere.
We have been to this place a few time before and I was surprised to see that its been updated since (Yes it’s been that long since), anyhow it was about half full but where we wanted to sit was reserved but they said it was ok, I guess they could see we would not be there all night and they would have the table ready in time for the next part – lucky us!
Our server brought us water right away (shock we didn’t even ask for it and this is how it should be in my opinion), we were not sure what we wanted to drink yet but were sure what we wanted to eat so she took our order and came back with some drink suggestions, I took one of her suggestions and it came to the table within a few minutes. Along with the salad for my husband’s entree as normal I pick at it, it was nice and crisp, it was a nice house salad, unlike some with just lettuce, this one had had lettuce, celery, carrot, purple cabbage, and tomato, and a homemade Italian dressing, it was fresh and crisp, it was beautiful and good!
Our server popped back to our table and scooped the plate up when we were done with it before we knew it and before we knew it our dinners where out. I was pleasantly surprised by the portions, and then the taste was really good.
I ordered the Cheese Tortellini Alfredo and it was one of the best I have had since the days of the old Quarto (4th/Burrard), I also eat the veggies off his plate to which were really good, I asked him how his was (I assumed it was good as he sucked it back pretty fast), he said it was good, he had the Veal with Spaghetti to which he said he it was softer then he liked (but he likes it kind of hard so this is a common statement from him, so I should have tried it).
Anyhow this is somewhere I would recommend to anyone and everyone! If you get our server Connie then you are really in great hands!
I am not sure why we continue to go back to this restaurant. The food is ok, the service would be better if she wasn't run off her feet but today took the cake! First off I order a shrimp salad, I got a chicken salad and when I questioned the waitress she argued with me about what I had ordered and then continued with "this is why I always repeat back the order". Don't argue with the customer. Then when it came time to pay the bill she didn't have enough bills in her float so I offered to pay first so my friend wouldn't get $10 in coins. But after taking my money she handed my friend just that $10 in coins and said, I hope you don't mind the bills have to last me all day. YES, she minded. Won't be going back!
The food was not very good. I ordered the Greek roast lamb and it tasted like it was pressured cooked and the rice was soupy. The bread was good. The price they charge were not worth the food that came. We can do much better elsewhere for the same price they charged. Super disappointed and will not go there again.
Also, our water were not refilled, not even once during our entire dinner on Saturday . The place was empty, not busy at all.
I returned to the Best Neighbor for dinner recently and was very disappointed. I used to visit every few weeks a couple of years ago. The food this visit was horrific…tasted like bottled sauce poured over prawns and chicken. The Greek Salad was mushy and flavorless. The vegetables were served with a fake cheese sauce – they type you get at a fast food nacho chip stand at the local fair. What are they thinking??? Cheese sauce on steamed vegetables – are you kidding me??? The only edible part was the rice. The restaurant was nicely renovated, the bathrooms spotless and newly renovated also. Maybe they should have put the money towards a real chef instead of hiring someone that can operate a microwave and open a bottle of sauce. The waitress was fantastic – I think she was embarrassed serving the sub-standard food. She needs to quit her job and get a new job where she could be appreciated for her friendly service. Will I return….no.
I am staying in the area for vacation. Best Neighbours is the closest to my hotel. I ate there three seperate times and had three different meals. I am suprised by the other reviews on this site. I did not have a negative experience at all! I had lasagne, spaghetti and the chicken soulvaki. The meals were tasty, the soulvaki being the best. The tzatziki is better than any I've tried. The restaurant was very clean, the atmosphere nice and the wait staff pleasant. I eat out alot and travel alot and so I think I can safely say that this is a good, consistent restaurant. I will return here to eat when I'm back in three months.
My family loves going to this place. It is in walking distance for my grandparents and almost as close for us. The food isn't spectacular but it is always good sized portions and tasty. I wouldn't mind a nicer salad or a bit more diversity of the menu but if you feel like a good steak and potatoes or a nice vegetable pizza this is super. They've always been ver considerate even when booking large groups or showing up late for a reservation. It's a relaxed comfortable place for the family to go to and not have to cook at home. You get a lot of food and its healthy. The desserts aren't great but we generally go home for dessert. Beer is on tap and a good price especially on certain days (Monday, I think, but I could be wrong). I would give a higher number rating except the words don't match. I'd say 4/5 but I wouldn't say outstanding. Its just solid and reliable, which is actually quite an outstanding thing to have in the neighbourhood.
