Local beer and wine, Canadian comfort food, and a friendly laid back atmosphere.
I wondered whether this spot would withstand the surrounding competition when it first opened up a few months ago, and thankfully it's holding up really well!
The Beaver and Mullet is a (very) little local jewel, located on one of the busiest corners in the west end. My friends and I met there after biking the seawall, we scored a spot on the street-level patio in the sun. Our server was friendly, service was prompt, beers were perfectly chilly, the sliders were absolutely delicious.
They have an interesting concept called "pay what you think it's worth". Each day the chef presents a different special, you order it, then pay what you think it's worth. Might try that next time!
We were thoroughly impressed and I will definitely be back!
As we live in the West End, we noticed this new bistro a few doors down from the corner of Davie & Denman and decided to check it out. We were looking for someplace to watch the Canucks and have something to eat and drink. A prerequisite was that the sound to the hockey game had to be up, not drowned out by music. Not only was the broadcast sound up, but we could hear it (no music during game).
The place is all about Canadiana, from its ambiance, food, drink, service and especially the friendly staff. The bar seats nine, which is where we positioned ourselves in front of the big flat-screen TV.
Good atmosphere and so was the food which was reasonably priced along with the Tinhorn Creek red and white wine. Did I mention that they sell local micro-brewed beer? Looking to make it a regular place to watch the games.
Since it only seats 44 inside and 10 outside, you better be early on game nights.
Two thumbs up.
Probably the best food I've had in Vancouver so far. Husband and I each ordered a house salad and split a custom-made mac and cheese. The salad was divine, and the mac was amazing as well. Husband also had a beer that rendered him momentarily speechless. The food alone is enough to bring me back again and again.
Our server was sweet and attentive, and made sure we were having a good time. The food came really quickly, too, though I could only see one guy in the kitchen.
The value, simply outstanding. We ended up paying just over $30 for three entrees and a beer. Can't find prices like that anywhere else downtown, at least, I haven't. And for the quality of the food, I would gladly have paid more.
Ambience was nice, though nothing incredibly special. The place is small, with table and bar seating. It was packed, though that doesn't necessarily mean there were a lot of people. The hockey game was on the three TVs, and everyone was clearly having a good time. Not a good place to go for a quiet, romantic dinner, but if you're looking for amazing food and a place where you can laugh and talk, The Beaver and Mullet is the place for you.
