Cute little lunch and coffee place within easy walking distance of VGH. Everyday there is a new soup of the day made on the premises, plus espresso drinks, paninis, and various baked goods.
This cafe is very near VGH and gets a lot of traffic from the health care crowd. Despite a great number of customers, the manager (owner?) is very personable, and he'll remember you the second time... He might even know your name on your third visit.
The cafe offers a wide variety of made-to-order and ready-to-eat items. They also are okay with minor substitutions/alterations. The eating area is seat-yourself, but the tables are always clean, there is plenty of bar-style seating for eaters on the go, and sofas and chairs for those who wish to stay and enjoy.
Here's where Bean So Good really gets me--at 5 minutes to their closing, my friend and I wandered in, wanting espresso drinks. Even though he was giving the floor a final sweeping, the owner stopped what he was doing and cheerfully made us our drinks, wishing us a pleasant evening as we left 3 minutes after closing. Being willing to serve a small order so close to the end of his busy day gets him brownie points.
This little gem is family run and feels like home for most of us. Is a major scientist/physician hang-out. Mike and Josie (the owner) are very personal and Mike is a one-man show with a big heart.
The food: The soups are delicious and so are the sandwiches, though they don't have a big variety. Coffee is great and goes well with the soft cookies and the sugar-free muffins. Everything is homemade and mainly organic, the sandwiches (the salmon is awesome) are a pricey, but affordable in a soup combo. Highly recommendable.
