Pretty Typical Food

Submitted Sunday, September 11, 2011 - 6:30pm [Dine in]

Stopped by here for Lunch on a Sunday. It wasn't too busy at all. Seated pretty quickly. A Renovation of the interior had been done pretty recently, it all looks a lot better. The place had Air Con, which is good for such a hot day. Parking is plenty up front and in the back.

I had the Combo A. It came with a chicken skewer, some white rice, 2 Fried Spring Rolls, and a Shrimp Salad Roll. The Rice was pretty gross, they put too much water. The Spring rolls were great. The Shrimp salad roll wasn't too good, the Shrimp was a little fishy. I asked my friend about hers, she said the same, but, it didn't bother her. Pretty good deal too, was under 10 bucks.

The Pho Noodle she had looked alright, a pretty decent size.

I'd come back to this place. No Frills good eats and great deals as like most Vietnamese Restaurants. I'd go back to this place, I wouldn't give it Rave Reviews, but, I think it's decent fair.

I ordered the Pho House Special and Spring Rolls and I was filled up with stuff to take home too. The price is also cheap, and who doesn't like decent food at a decent price? :-) The service was kind of slow, but I find that they're often serving a mid to full house, so I don't expect too much in terms of speed. The ambiance is pretty okay. They keep the place clean. The restaurant feels really homey, especially with the (reasonably) close setting and chatty environment. The staff are always friendly and it's just a best-cost experience at Bao Chau.

The quick and reliable

Bao Chau keeps me coming back to sate my msg/sodium jones. My usual- well-done flank pho(small order is plenty big) isnt generally too fatty and the condiment side dish of sprouts, lime wedge and basil leaves are always fresh. A key point here is the generous amount of basil they give you. Of course, with any pho joint, its the broth that the discerning soup lover key on. At Bao Chao I always find the broth to be clear, moderately beefy, slightly tangy and nicely balanced between sweet and salty. If I have one...um, beef... its that the broth could be a little hotter. However, its a consistently decent bowl of soup that satisfies on a cold, damp winter day. If I'm starved, I order a single spring roll in addition to the soup. They too are generally good. Bao Chao is also clean and the service quick, efficient and friendly enough. Even during a typically busy lunch rush, your pho will arrive in no more than 6 or 7 minutes. A Hastings-Sunrise stand-by.

Hello there,

Whenever I'm in the area from some good and cheap Vietnamese...I usually go here for take out lunch. My order...one or two salad rolls with two spring rolls. The salad rolls are filled with bean sprouts and rice vermielli...with sliced Vietnamese ham and cooked shrimp. Also comes with a peanut/hoisin dipping sauce. Pretty good standard stuff. The spring rolls are hot off the deepfryer...the filling is more grinded up than I want but still pretty tasty. Its served with a slightly stronger fish sauce/rice vinegar dipping solution....cuts through the grease!!

Great Pho and Spring rolls

This is my favorite Pho place in the lower mainland. The Pho soup here is clear and not cloudy like other Pho places. Don't come here expecting the best service but the food is specatacular for Pho and I always go bad. The Spring rolls are very yummy and bigger than other Pho places, as well as cheaper.

Definetely recommend this place to true Pho lovers.

The best Pho Tai!
By stc_jelly of vancouver (5 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, February 2, 2009 - 2:07pm [Dine in]

I love this place and have been going there for over 10 years. I have a hard time enjoying my Pho anywhere else. I am not a fan of spring rolls, so I won't talk about that here.
This place is always packed at lunch. It opens at 11 am though, so you can get here early and be sure to be seated at a table. or come around two. otherwise, if you are dining by yourself you may have to share, and it can be very very noisy.
The small Pho Tai is 6.00. Yes, they did raise their prices in the last few months, but then, the price of everything has gone up in this economy and if it means the restaurant can keep up the quality of its menu, its fine by me. It's still an excellent deal, you might find cheaper pho but not nearly as good.
If you are not familiar with this dish, Pho Tai is noodles, onions and herbs in a clear, fragrant beef knuckle broth. Paper thin slices of raw beef go on top, and the heat of the soup cooks it. First thing i do when the bowl comes is separate the slices so they don't stick together. Then I tuck them under the noodles to cook, stirring the whole thing around a bit. This makes sure they don't stay raw (a review below complained about this, I say, you just don't know how to eat it! or you could ask for your soup to be extra hot, I am sure they would oblige)
Once the meat is cooked i add the bean sprouts, a couple of basil leaves and stir it up again. Taste, add lime as needed and the chili oil hot sauce that's in a jar on ever table. I love this sauce, I think they make it themselves, no other establishment seems to have anything similar. And I love spicy!
There also seems to be no MSG. which is a plus, lots of folks get a reaction from that.
On top of that they keep your glass filled with free hot chrysanthemum tea, or iced tea in the summer. Yes, the owner is friendly as are all the staff. Thats why I love this place!!!

I really like their dishes here, the price is good, and the service is fast...but it's not the cleanest place! Sometimes the place smells funky. I've gotten sick there once before too...but still go when I crave for good pho :P

We usually drop by for pho at least once a month.. the people that run the place are friendly and service is fairly prompt. However in the last couple of visits, we've noticed the spring rolls are smaller with less filling and the large sized pho is just a tad larger than the regular pho.. and it was upsetting when they stopped serving mi bahn.. but overall, the food is pretty good and worth a visit.

My bf and I love to frequent Bao Chau simply for the reason that they have good and cheap eats. I usually order pho bo hue and my bf a large bowl of beef flank pho just great comfort food and perfect for the day after partying way too hard! Spring rolls are to die for! We have tried the rice dishes and they are hearty, meaty, and filling! Service is solid nothing to complain about and ambience is lacking but the food is really what keeps us coming back.

My husband and I have been dining here for over 13yrs now. We have never had bad food, never gotten sick and never experienced any off smells. I have also spent time checking out the coastal healths review of this restaurant. I don't think it's ever been closed.

My family and i have always been well attended to and we will continue to go there over many other restaurants.

Average meal

Upon recommendation by a friend I went to eat here. Instead of going by his word, I should have read the reviews beforehand.

My expectations arose as I saw that the place was not empty. And for the location it is in, with many other restaurants that also serve Vietnamese, I thought I was making a good choice.

But I was wrong. I had the spring rolls and the pho, both recommended to me. The food was average - I guess I expexted more? But what really bothered me was the low level of hygiene.

Be aware: this place is cash only.

Great broth!
By tasteaholic of North Vancouver (7 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, November 1, 2009 - 9:05pm [Dine in]

I've tried alot of pho places and I've found both the quality of the broth (clear, not murky or oily, no msg taste/after effect) and the meat (fresh beef balls, great rare beef) to be excellent. Unlike a previous review I believe the small and large pho's to be consistent and great value. The beansprouts, thai basil and limes are almays fresh. I find the service to be efficent and very friendly, unlike some other Vietnemese places. The spring rolls are generally good, only once or twice in 3 yrs of frequenting this place have the rolls or broth been below their high standards. While Iove their pho, I don't like their grilled meat dishes. I find the marinade they use on the pork and chicken really not to my taste, I go to other restaurants for grilled pork and lemon grass chicken.
Oh, they've also had a renovation recently, the place now sparkles and is very clean.

I always find myself waking up to days of craving Bao Chau pho. It's the best pho in the city. I really mean it! They have others things on the menu that are delicious too like their famous spring rolls or their pork chops on rice. Mmmmm. The service is only good if the owner is serving you, otherwise it can be off sometimes. Getting orders wrong or having to wave your arms in the air to finally get one of the servers attention. You get what you pay for and more...very good sized portions and always fresh. The place is indeed due for some renos, but that's ok i don't go for the ambience, i go for the darn good food!

Go next door to Saigon, skip this place.

Food Rating: The broth in my noodles were salty, and felt watered down to increase the volume of the soup, while avoiding to make more. Savings on operating expenses I suppose. Also, there was a hair in my soup, enough said.

Service Rating: Slow to clean the tables, and the tables are sticky. A dirty cloth isn't going to fix everything.

Value Rating: Raised their prices, which is unjustified since I do not want to pay extra, for the extra topping in my soup. (the hair)

Ambiance: Has a feeling of a home, a dirty one. Sticky tables, and sticky sauce bottles.

Good pho and spring rolls
By Bonka of Vancouver (464 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, October 2, 2008 - 7:48am [Dine in]

I don't think there's you can have great Pho but this is one of the few places that does it pretty good consistently.

I usually order the assorted meats with a spring roll and it always hits the spot. The broth is fragrant and I've yet to confirm if there's any MSG in it (quite a few places leave me thirsty, however this one doesn't). The spring rolls are one of the best I've had at a Pho restaurant. The crispy outside skin is my favourite part.

Their dishes are like any other place but theirs tastes just a little better than most around town.

Servers are quite friendly (the owner especially!) and it's fairly clean. Cash only please.

Just okay, nothing special
By EatsFats of Vancouver (322 Reviews)

Outside it also says "Spring Roll House" special or something. Inside, for a spring roll specialty place, they sure don't have any choice really. (Large? Or Small?). They were okay, but not amazing.

Pho was okay, but nothing great. Can't remember about the bun bo hue too much here. That stuff IS good, but was not great at this place, certainly not memorable. (Not bad, just not great).

Overall, I'd say if you're in the neighbourhood and have to have pho, it's okay, but not a destination. Of course, there are many other places up and down Hastings as well....
