Backstage at the Granville Island Theatre
We came here mostly as a backup since we wanted to ring in a friend's birthday without having to hop elsewhere once dinner was finished. The website was enough affirmation that this was a sound decision.
Drinks flowed and as did the food..somewhat. The menu is small though what was available for choosing hardly stood out. Wings, poutine, yam fries, brie - basic preparation eats. Their special "filone" bread that accompanied the brie was no better in taste than your day old rye crostini. The roasted red pepper pesto to top off your toast points tasted like it came out of a jar and I felt was a poor pairing choice. When the yam fries are the best dish of the lot, it tells you something.
Service was slow. Drinks took as long to come as our food. Oddly enough, our server checked up on us more frequently as the night wore on, and when her shift was coming to an end. The save would be for our server. She was friendly, personable and comfortable. She teased her mental retention skills every time, and each time it broke down on her when we started calling out more than 2 items. I found it comical, as she stumbled out her pencil and wrinkled piece of paper.
Good looking pub, but we came on the wrong night. We were seated in a seperate area off the main room which I felt was perfect. They had live music that night, turns out it was Russian music. Not many with a broad enough liking to music would enjoy those particular tunes. And when your own waitress tell us we came on the worst night possible, fair warning..Again, great save by the management for seating us away from the music, crowd and noise.
I believe they have a lot of different bands coming through so I suppose this would either be the place to be...to avoid..
We came here primarily to have a bite to eat before we went to The Granville Arts Stage to watch a play. It's a convenient place to go as its only footsteps to the Arts stage but I would recommend you arrive at least 1 1/2 hour before the play to eat because it starts to fill up with people who have the same idea and the service looks like it gets slow when its busy in there.
Ambiance is mediocre,,,nothing to make you yell and scream, the high tables are out of sync with the stool chairs that go with them,,,you wind up with the table top 12" below your chin..
The service was great for us...our waitress was very attentive and helpful in choosing which food would be fastest to get served.
The food was okay,,,I mean its not 4 star food okay its pub grub...and somewhat overpriced as you could imagine being that close to Granville Island.
We used two Groupon's for the 5 of us and never had any problems at all,,,so all in all I'd say for an appy and a drink before the play...its a good spot to go.

Ate here before a show at the arts club. Slow night the place was almost empty. Thought great will be quick ! WRONG ! Service was so slow had 10mn to eat before the show after waiting over an hour for food. Waitress was rude and food mediocre. Would go to Sandbar or Bridges next time.
We recently booked this restaurant for dinner for a Stag and were greatly dissapointed with a number of things. We had previously scouted out the menu online and when we got to the restaurant a number of items were no longer available on the menu but they had never updated their website...this was incredibly embarassing. Service started off good until ordering began and the server seemed terribly confused and confirmed each person's order a minimum of 3 X. We had to find the Server to ask to clear the dishes as well as bring the bill as she was nowhere to be found. The restaurant itself was quite nicely decorated but aside from that is nothing special at all and would not recommend it to anyone.
The Backstage Lounge saved an otherwise horrible night at Granville Island for us. We had gone for dinner at another establishment, and left due to poor service. We were starving, and headed straight for the next open restaurant. We were seated on the patio at the backstage Lounge, overlooking the water and boats on a beautiful evening. The waitress was prompt and very friendly, she brought our drinks straight away, and gave us the heads up that the kitchen was busy, and our dinners may take a little longer to come. No problem, we told her about our experience at the other restaurant, and even she apologised for the other restaurant's bad service ~ what a professional, and a credit to the food service industry! The food came hot, and tasty, and at under $15 a plate the value was certainly there. Don't pay huge prices at Granville Island, the view from the Backstage is exactly the same as the high priced joints, and the service and friendliness is 100 times better.
Me and my girlfriend went to go see a play on granville island and decided to get a bite to eat before the show. This place is absolutely fantastic with a outstanding view of the river. The food and service were okay but the view was definately worth it. The value was pretty good as it cost less than $40 including tip for a appetizer and two entrees. We also got a discount with our theatre tickets. Definately go check this place out if your on the Granville Island.
