Solid brunch

Had the eggs west coast with smoked salmon eggs benedict on a croissant. Very nicely done. Croissant was surprisingly fresh and the hollandaise sauce was not overpowering.

The blueberry pancake on the other hand, was a bit of a miss. In terms of value, $12.95 for 3 pancakes only was a bit much, although the quality was very good and the blueberries serving was generous. However, one of the 3 pancakes was overdone and was on the dark side, especially when compared to the other 2 on the plate. We mentioned this to the waitress and she basically didn't do anything except to say yeah, it's like that because of the blueberries. (But why were the other 2 done properly??). We tried another waitress and she handled it much better by offering to replace it. Although the redone piece was perfect, it did cost us extra waiting time as a result.

Might return to try other entrees that looked pretty good.

Quick Dinner with some Sangria

We easily got a reservation. We had the Jambalaya with fettuccine, Calamaris and Crab Cakes. We shared a 1/2 litre of Sangria. Food was very good as was the service. Chef came out from the kitchen to inquire if everything was to our satisfaction. It was. We will be coming back as ehis is also a quiet place to get a bite to eat.

Out to grab a small bite with a friend

A friend and I stopped by here after a meeting. We had both picked something off the menu and were waiting for our waitress to come by so we could order. When she stopped by, she described the menu so well, that instead of feeling just a bit hungry we were both starving and could hardly wait to try the food. The food was excellent. However the service we received from Anja was by far so much superior than service you expect for such a place. She made us feel so special that I had to ask her if she was the owner or not. And to my surprise she responded that she was just working there. If you have not stopped by there before, I highly recommend it....even more so when Anja is working there. .

I really wanted to like this place...

Went to Avenue Grill with a friend last Friday. The lady that sat and took our orders was very courteous. I saw the prices of the specials that day and thought that they were decent. The place looked clean but a bit empty. It was past 2PM so maybe it was after the lunch rush. Our dishes came quickly. I ordered the lamb shank and my friend ordered the roast beef sandwhich and soup. My entree came with hash browns and a tossed salad with balsamic dressing. I have to say that my lamb shank was fork-tender and flavourful and the protion was good. The salad was nothing to be excited about. I thought it was odd that the lamb Shank came with hashbrowns but I gave them a try. They were cold and the crusty bits were not crunchy but a bit hard. My friend had no complaints about her soup and roast beef sandwhich.

I have to say that we were both disappointed in the service. No one came back to ask us if everything was fine or if we needed anything, no one refilled our water glasses. The young man who took our dishes away spoke so softly and mumbled that for an empty restaurant, I found him difficult to hear and understand. Before he could even ask us if we wanted anything else, he was already handing us the bill. I was craving dessert that day, so I told him that I would like the dessert menu and some coffee. Again he mumbled his words that I didn't realzie he was aking me what I wanted in my coffee. I was excited when I saw Creme Brulee on the menu and ordered that. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! This particular dessert came in a small, 3-inch ramekin . For $6.96, I was expecitng it to be a bit bigger. As my friend and I tried to break the caramelized sugar with our spoons, something weird happened!,instead of cracking, the spoons made an indentation on the caramel! The topping wasn't crunchy or crackly as creme brulee toppings should be. Instead it was chewy! The custard was not smooth at all and you could not taste any hint of vanilla. It was a rip off.

This will be my first and last visit to Avenue Grill. The service and the food just isn't worth it.

My husband, me, and my 4 year old stopped in for a little bite cause we were in the area and I am pregnant and so needed to eat something and our daughter was hungry. Then we saw the brunch prices, at least $13 for a basic breakfast or omelette. My husband said he could wait for food, so I just order one omelette plate and asked for 2 side plates. It said on the menu that split plates are $3.00..I asked what this entailed and was told they split the plate up basically and maybe add a bit more food. $3 bucks to split my plate? Anyway, my plate comes and they ended up splitting it into 3 plates. I said that I wanted 2 side plates and she said the manager told her that I still would have been charged the split plate price if I had of just got side plates! I thought she was joking, I was astonished at this. I said, "you mean, you would charge me $3 for me to put food from my plate onto a side plate?" She said yes. This place is pretentious and ridiculously priced. The food didn't even look special. We ended up leaving without eating. At those prices, we could all go to a place that offers local and organic food, not some yuppy hole in the wall that treats customers like crap!

What a disappointment. We have patronized the Avenue Grill for 20 years and it was a great local spot for an evening out. The food under present management is unrefined, something you would find prepared by your bachelor uncle. There are hardly any diners in the place and it is obvious why, poor food. The restaurant is cute as always and the service is nice but unless the kitchen changes you will be disappointed.

Few night ago we had guests from out of town, they suggested Avenue Grill for our night out since it was recommended by some of their friends who had great experience some months ago.
My husband and I have never been at Avenue Grill and didn't know what to expect.
We were warmly greeted and sat at the table by the window even though we didn't reserve, and it was pretty busy night.
After few solid classic appetizers, Cathy and I ordered a seafood Calypso dish with rice pilaf and if not to be embarrassed we would ask for seconds, fresh and spectacular. Boys ordered Lamb Curry and Prime Rib steak; after looking after them for more than a decade we knew they were happy since they had their carnivore grins on.
Server was more than attentive. She made sure we were well taken care of.
Even brought us dessert and some delicious champagne drinks on the house at the end of the night.
This was fantastic experience, and now we know where we'll take our friends for dinners

Decent little Italian place

Came here for dinner on a weekday evening. Didn't know what to expect until we stepped in the door. Italian..OK. It's a small, quaint dining area that was dimly lit. I had mixed feelings with the ambience and decor. On one hand it felt cosy and casual, with the board on the wall stating specials, but the menu seemed to branch a few strokes over to more mid-scale dining with seafood offerings however I will digress.

My girlfriend and I were seated in a small table by the doorway. We quickly ordered as both of us were hungry. I ended up with the Soup De Jour and the Sausage Tomato Penne and my girlfriend had the Veal Cannelloni. We ordered the standard soda and ice tea.

The soup was a Minestrone type. Pretty good but alas only warm to the tongue when it arrived. The Cannelloni was good with a nicely minced filling and amply portioned. My penne was only decent. The sauce was a touch sour, and the sausage was scant. I would've preferred the outer casing on the Chorizo to be removed as it made chewing through it a unpleasant. Pasta was more overdone than I would prefer.

Service was adequate. It would meet expectations for this kind of restaurant but seems like a couple of the waitresses I saw could benefit from better (or more) training.

This place is pretty easy on the wallet and would be worth considering to drop in for a meal if you were in the area.

What I liked about lunch at the Avenue Grill was the choice of about 10 specials (not counting the regular menu) which indicates a chef with a knack of buying locally and wisely. I had the breaded oysters with ceasar salad ($11.95) which were four of the sweetest freshed oysters I've had for ages, the manager told us they were just bought that morning. My friends had the prime rib burger ($10.95) and the soup and salad special ($9.95) which were both well presented and tasty. The seating is a little crowded but it had a feeling of a small Paris old fashioned bistro. Will be back for dinner!

went for dinner and had the chicken burger, the chicken arrived with a hard skin on it, obviously left over from lunch menu and then tossed in the convection oven. the fries were soggy and pathetic, like something you get from the freezer at safeway.
ambiance ok, service ok, dishes being done right in the seating area lots of water and banging about.
the fish order my wife had was ok, not bad not geat, rice looked like uncle bens out of a bag.

would we go again... not really. its way to expensive for what you get, we could have gone to trafalgars and had a proper meal. oh and they overcharged me $2 on the chicken burger.

A landmark in the admittedly sterile Kerrisdale food landscape, this was a seriously flawed lunch. Ordering was slow, even though it was no less than full than on any other midday lunch service. The gazpacho soup special was little more than a vegetable soup, which though adequate, was a pretty untraditional watered down recipe.

While the smoked chicken penne was old-school comfort and perfectly acceptable (food=3.5), the canneloni was the worst dish I've witnessed in a long time (food < 1). It was made with such a ridiculous quantity of sage with the ricotta as to render it nearly inedible. When raised with the waitress, a shrug of the shoulders, a mumbled "that'sthewaytheymakeit" and nothing further. Dessert tiramisu was tasty and light. It was the kind of lunch where one doesn't object further but if it was just friends, I'd have been livid with management, particularly when no adjustment to the bill nor an apology was offered. Throw in shoddy attention (we were able to make a cool little plate pyramid), and I expect to be successful in avoiding Avenue Grill through 2011 at least.

It was my first visit to the avenue Grill. I ordered the lamb curry plate. My mother cooks a fantastic lamb curry (1/2 day endeavor with freshly made garam masala and grated coconut). The avenue Grill version time travelled me back to my parent's home in Montreal...thanks so much for the wonderful comfort food!

I was here with a friend for dinner a few weeks back. I always have a love for tiny restaurant, because they are usually quiet and I can enjoy the company of friends.

I myself order their spiced calamari. It was abit too salty to be honest so I had to eat it with a lettece.

Other than the appy, the entree, which was lasanga was actually quite good. I love the creamy flavour of the sauce because it taste very different. The server explained that the chef is Iranian so he made some of is own blend of sauce.

For desert, I guess because I am always a chocolate peanutbutter fan. Their choco peanut butter cake was absolute fantastic!!!

As for service, its decent. They took my order, followup to make sure we are okay and promptly service my request. I could not ask for more

Frozen Veggies? Really?
By legacysans of kerrisdale , vancouver (2 Reviews)

I recently moved to Kerrisdale and a few weeks ago I went to the Avenue Grill for dinner with a friend. Loved the ambiance of the place and, besides one other couple, we were the only ones there on a Thursday night. We ordered from the chalkboard menus and enjoyed a martini (even though martinis weren't featured on the drinks menu). My friend ordered a special, a paella, which she enjoyed. I ordered the veal cutlet with a red wine reduction, potatoes and veggies. The veal was swimming in a metallic-tasting, hyper-salty brown gravy that featured sliced button mushrooms, so uniform in size I can only assume that they were originally canned. What meat I could find underneath all of the gravy was tough and leathery. The potatoes were frozen French fries and the veggies were again suspiciously consistent in size and texture - I can only assume that they were originally frozen. For this sad, prefab entrée I paid close to $20.00. I'm sure it was a karmic kick in my butt for ordering the veal in the first place but, even so, if you can't even provide fresh vegetables with an entrée, why offer it at all? And frozen McCain fries? Really?

I hear that the Grill is great for breakfast so I will try it again, but I'll never go back for dinner. Really disappointing.

When we arrived at 9:30am, the restaurant was empty. Maybe that should have told me something.

The server was friendly and professional, and the coffee was pretty tasty, if not a bit under-hot.

We both ordered 2 eggs o/e, with sausages. It comes with your typical complement of toast'n'browns. We also ordered a fruit bowl to share.

My eggs were burned around the edges, and one of the yokes was broken. They were really greasy. The toast was cold and floppy - really, really floppy from being soggy. The hashbrowns were basically potato skins chipped off a potato, and then deep fried - but it seems to me they'd been deep fried to be reheated, maybe from the day before, because they were as hard as little pebbles. I'm not talking crispy - I'm talking HARD like plastic. The sausage was butterfly-cut, which I don't like personally, but that's just my preference. It was overly fried.

The fruit bowl was full of over-ripe honeydew and canteloupe, and had over-ripe blueberries. The pineapple was ok.

When the server asked, "How is everything?" and I said it was "ok", she replied, "It's good, then! Ok, great!" and walked away. Hmm... She was good otherwise, though.

I will never go again, and I would never recommend anyone go. 2 bad breakfasts and a fruit bowl to share cost nearly $30, and if it wasn't the worst breakfast I've ever had, it was within the top two.

Don't expect Class A food here, but for what they charge and what they give you, it is good value for money, which is why this place is always busy.

I had a 6-oz. rib-eye steak, and I asked for medium rare. It came out looking good, but only the top was medium rare; the inside and bottom were almost completely rare. I asked for it to be slightly cooked further. As I feared, it subsequently came out being medium well, and the meat was tough.

Had they paid a bit more attention to the initial cooking, the steak could have been very good. I looked around, and the food on other tables all looked pretty good too. There is also a very wide and decent selection of wine by the glass.

This place was great. The service was so fast and courteous and the food was hot hot hot! I went for breakfast on Thursday morning with three acquaintances and although it was pretty busy we got seats right away. It wasn't too noisy considering the coziness and amount of people in the restaurant. We ordered what I thought to be a regular breakfast. (I had sunny side up eggs, toast, bacon, and hash-browns) To my surprise it didn't turn out to be a regular breakfast. The food was so good, especially the well-cooked hashbrowns! So much flavor and presentation is very nice as well. The cozy restaurant was renovated about a year and half ago. Great hardwood floors and very high ceilings. The artwork displays are very vivid and available to buy from local artists upon request. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to contemplate purchasing one because our food came so quickly! I was shocked because the tables were full, and we had only been waiting about 8 minutes! Great food, Great service, Great atmosphere. The only thing close to mediocre was my lack of picking out a decent outfit!
Thank goodness the restaurants appeal took away from my lack of fashion sense! ;)
Going back for dinner next week... Can't wait!

Incredible Birthday Party
By BPJ of Kitislano, Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, November 16, 2009 - 12:15am [Dine in]

We just celebrated my father's 70'th birthday this past weekend, at the Avenue Grill, and I felt compelled to share our wonderful experience.
The restaurant closed for regular business, to accomodate our party of 46 people. (My apologies to the "regulars" who missed their favourite restaurant on saturday evening!)
From the initial planning stages for the party, to the evening itself, I have to give the owner and his team all the credit. They knew this was a special evening for my family, and went over and above to make sure that it was memorable. The entire team was incredibly dedicated to ensuring every last detail was taken care of.
We had a menu of 5 different main courses to choose from, and the chef did not disappoint! The Lamb Osso Buco was exceptional, as was the Tilapia and Duck Confit! The restaurant also accomodated our request to have two other main courses prepared, which weren't on their regular menu. Our guests gave compliment upon compliment on the ambiance, the service, and the incredible meal.
If you are considering a larger party or celebration here, do not hesitate. You'll be taken care of every step of the way. If you just want a nice meal in a friendly, comfortable bistro, I suggest you stop by - you won't be disappointed.
A big "Thank you" to Sasa and his team, for making my father's birthday such an incredible success!

Tried to eat here for dinner, What a mistake. I've eaten here several times for breakfast as well as Brunch and been quite happy. But when i ordered the Peppercorn Steak off the specials board what i got was a plain tastless steak that had peppercorn sauce on the side. Fries that were crispy enough i could swear they were deep fried twice and hard steamed carrots. The steak had more marbling fat on it then actual meat. the rest of our party was better but pretty bland.

The service was ok, the Ambiance was nice, could be a decent place to eat dinner if they had a new chef, or just stick to what their good at Breakfasts.
