Really noisy restaurant

Had the 2 dishes with soup and rice for $26.00. Soup was only lukewarm but the mains were fresh and tasty. Service was below par had to wave for service after being seated and had to do the same to get the bill. Very loud restaurant and 100% Asian clientele. The Au Wing Kee in Burnaby is much better then this location. No chance of a return visit.

Disappointing Visit
By applepie of Burnaby (129 Reviews)

I like the Au Wing Kee in Burnaby and thought this one would be comparable. It was a disappointing first visit. The noodle soup with fish balls looked a lot better than it tasted that day. And service was pretty much non-existent, extremely slow and unattentive. We even had to ask for the menu. They were obviously under-staffed that day, so I might consider giving them a second try if I happen to be in the neighbourhood because of the one in Burnaby.

Reliable Chinese Food

Food: budha's feast chow mein was pretty good. surprisingly a lot of diff veggies: 3-4 types mushrooms, bby corn, carrots, watercrest, sprouts, bok choy, and bamboo. one of the best we've tried. shredded chicken fried rice was good too. decent serving size. i have had congee here b4 too and i have to say quality is pretty good.

Service: efficient. there xmas eve and the place was packed, but still only 2 servers and they were moving fast! we were impressed they kept the place running. food came out quickly too.

Ambiance: fairly clean and bright inside. suitable for family gatherings or quick meals. parking on the street and out back.

Overall: def a reliable place for congee, chow mein, noodles or fried rice. will return in the future to try their other menu offerings.

Delicious & Reliable Chinese Food
By MBAK of Vancouver (80 Reviews)

I'm always satisfied with the food at Au Wing Kee. I've tried at least 5 items off of their massive menu and find it difficult to say which one is my favourite. Even my extremely picky parents like eating here!

Food:
Delicious! It's a bit on the greasey side - but I don't mind that much. We always order the satay beef noodle when we eat there and there's always a good amount of beef and vegetables.

Service:
Pretty good. Attentive. Fast.

Value:
EXCELLENT! Both the lunch and dinner menu are very good in value. We always have lots of left overs.

Ambiance:
Forgettable. You don't come here for the decor - just the food.

The only thing I would change about this place is the location (I wish they were closer to us).

MSG Galore

This is not a place to return. After I had my meal, I can definately taste the MSG after taste. It almost feels like they put nothing in their food but MSG. Their service were a couple of old chinese ladies yelling at each other. Hmmm.........

The feeling afterwards to is pretty awful.

There is also another Au Wing Kee Restaurant around the metrotown area, and that one has been in business for a long time. I still remember when i was little, i used to go with my family and i would always order wonton noodle soup! =) I recently ate at this location and the service was good, nothing too special and the food was great for such a good price. I will definitely return. They also have great mini deals after 9pm or something =)

Great food for a small price!

One of my favourites is their hot and sour soup! There are a lot of ingredients and it's not too spicy! The house special wonton and noodles in soup is also very good. Definitely recommended.

The place is very clean for a chinese restaurant, and service was good. It was pretty spacious too. Highly recommended!

Pretty good

I like this location WAY better than the Burnaby one. As so many people have commented before on other blogs, the Burnaby one is small, smelly and if you think service is bad in Vancouver, it is even worse in Burnaby! I do think the Vancouver location is short staff though that's why it appears to have bad service. Also, if you expect Western style service, this location is not what you are looking for. The servers have average English skill but they are not going to chit-chat with you like a "Western" restaurant would, and from my observation they are a straight forward bunch that probably don't sweet talk people. They give you your standard service and maybe sometimes they are trying to catch up but I feel their effort is there to try to help out as soon as they can. I have seen non-Chinese at this restaurant before (heck, I have several non-Chinese relatives who have dinner with my family at THIS restaurant) - keep in mind that the location of the restaurant (high % of demographic with Chinese heritage) and the type of restaurant (your neighbourhood family Chinese restaurant), the clientele would mostly be Chinese, and the fact that it is a smaller restaurant than the Burnaby one, so comes the noise. Yes, I am quite offended by the previous review.

Anyway, food is good - there are misses too (don't quite like their satay beef, kind of flavourless) and sometimes their Peking duck is a bit dry but overall the food is good and for the price you are paying for it, it is super value. Oh yeah, their chicken is probably the best I've tasted so far! Other traditional menu items such as noodles and congee are all solid too; not necessarily spectacular, but consistently good.

Vancouver VS Burnaby Branch.
By WiseOne of Vancouver (1 Review)

Vancouver VS Burnaby Branch? There is no comparison. I love the food at Au Wing Kee, Vancouver branch. We always go there. This is my Mom's favorite restaurant. The price, the quantity and quality of the food is so much better in Vancouver's branch than it is in Burnaby. The one is Burnaby is AWFUL. We were in the metrotown area and thought we would give it a try, thinking that it would be similar to the Vancouver one. We were extremely disappointed with the Burnaby Branch. I would never go back to the Burnaby one again. The Burnaby one was old and smelly, service was extremely bad and the food was smaller in size and not as tasty and fresh as the quality in the Vancouver one.

Don't go to the one in Burnaby!

The one on Burnaby is HORRIBLE its so dirty and smelly even though the food is o.k. I know that I should be writing this on the Burnaby review but I've been to this one in Vancouver and its 10x better, newer, tastier, cleaner and just better! The food is like totally opposite from one another but really if you want to have great Chinese eat at the one in VANCOUVER!

Once you find your favourite Chinese restaurant...
By shutupandeat of Vancouver (14 Reviews)

It's always good to find a favourite Chinese restaurant, but the key is to not know how they cook the food. That's the case with a lot of restaurant, otherwise you might be shockingly surprised and not in a good way.
AWK in Vancouver is a diner style restaurant, no ambiance but good food. I actually hosted a 40 person Chinese New Year 2009 dinner and everyone was very impressed with the food and the value. The servers were very nice and attentive. Food came out at a reasonable pace.

However the past couple of dinners at AWK was a bit lacking. The service was still good, but there wasn't much taste to the food. And it was quite bland. It's still good value, but our expectations will be a lot lower next time.

Only place open late night

After a night of clubbing and drinking found this place all lit up and busy. Piled in for some late grease. japanese people all inside. A good sign. Oh my goodness, someone was listening to my wishes. I can't believe I found it!!!! We were hungry and drive through was not what we needed. Oriental food now available in the west, aside from Asia. Oriental style pork makes an excellent topping for alcohol late at night.
Very cheap. Honestly you won't pay much.
