Will come again but order something else

We travelled further than normal for a cheeseburger after reading a review in the paper that raved about how excellent the cheeseburgers were and we had been wanting to try the restaurant for awhile. The service was great and the room is comfortable. We both ordered cheeseburgers, one with gorgonzola and one with leerdammer cheese, plus at additional cost also added lettuce and tomato. The frites were very good, we enjoyed those. The burgers were disappointing especially after the big rave in the paper. The meat was good and cooked the way we like it (I really dislike overcooked or well done meat) so that was fine. But the buns were all wrong for a burger, the burger was dry-no sauces or anything- no mustard of any kind just lettuce, tomato, cheese (and not enough cheese for our taste) and somehow the flavours just failed to come together. We were both really disappointed. With the two burgers, frites and one glass of wine (the cheapest glass on the menu) the bill was just over $37 before the tip. When we left we said we would come back but order something different. I can't recommend the burgers. Otherwise, it is worth checking out this restauant for the other really good items on the menu.

Doubtful I'll go back

Went here for brunch recently. I ordered the Croque Monsieur and Pommes Frites. My dining companion ordered the Shinkenspeck Eggs Benedict and an Americano.

I was really looking forward to eating the Croque Monsier, but was disappointed by it. The bechamel sauce was gritty, and there wasn't enough ham. The pommes frites were really good though.

The eggs on the eggs bennie were way overcooked to the point of rubberiness (definitely no flowing yolks), and the hollandaise sauce was more like a lemon sauce. The Americano was good though.

The servers were friendly even if they weren't very attentive. The server who said she would come back to refill our water glasses never did. Dishes were cleared only for me even though the both of us were done eating.

Was planning on returning before our first visit based on the menu, but eating there changed my mind.

A great hang out place

I just went there last night with 7 of my friends at 7 pm. It was very crowded and we had to wait outside for over 15 mins and because the place was small, we could not be seated in a table so we just sat on the bar, which was alright. We ordered the large grand tasting platter which came in a three tiered plates, the prosciutto and the cheese was great. We also ordered Mac n Cheese that was not bad and pretty big portion for the price. The Swiss Raclette was pretty good, the cheese was melted in front of us in some sort of burner and we just drizzle it on top of the potatoes. We also ordered white wine mussels that came with fries. The mussels are good, but I think the flavour is a little too bland. The last dish we ordered was the chicken liver terrine and it was good, very smooth and buttery. Last night, we ordered 4 bottles of wine, in general they were good, there was one bottle of riesling that was very fruity and smooth, I am not sure which one but I think it was the Dr. Loosen from Germany. Btw, I had the chocolate cookies in the end and it's interesting that it came in a paper bag and was very hot when it came so it's gotta be fresh from the oven. I find it a touch too sweet though. I will definitely come back here for the wine and cheese and also for hanging out with friends.

Quite enjoyed it

Found myself in the area so thought I'd stop by and try it out.

Food ... had the 'eat local' promotion, or something like that. Wild Mushroom Mac and Cheese included a glass of wine, very nice. Great Mushroom and Roasted Garlic Falvours, enough Cheese without being overwhelming. Topped with a Brioche and Almond crust. I thought it was great. Even came with a small Salad to start that was VERY simple but fresh and tasty enough. Although, with the restaurant being where it is (yes, you do see the crack whores as you walk in, and they do walk by and stop for a look in the window) not sure I'd promote the fact the greens are from a garden right down on the corner. But maybe that's just me.

Service ... nice young lady, attentive, but then I was the only one there (it was barely 5pm, they had plenty of reserved signs out for later tables). Small comment, please, no matter how slow it is, don't read the paper in front of customers. It's not befitting a nice restaurant. Also, found it quite odd that the Salad was brought "to start with" exactly 20 seconds before the main course.

Value ... great for the quality.

Ambience ... nice INSIDE, clean, modern

Would probably repeat for the fondue next time!

Didn't cut it for me

Figuratively speaking of course. They certainly did cut cheese and cured meats...and that's the extent of food preparation that we received. Upon entering, I was surprised to find a near empty restaurant on a Saturday evening where there was one other couple and then us.

Food: Good selection of cheese and charcuterie. I can't say anything negative about the quality of the imported cheese as there's no cooking to it. They did use a very nice old fashion meat slicer to finely slice our jamon. I finally got to try a raclette, where you place sliced cheese onto a small tray and then slide into an easy-bake grill-like contraption. Then the melted cheese is drizzled over boiled potatoes. That was an interesting experience. The jamon was very good, silky smooth and not overbearingly salty.

Service: really attentive service and how could it not be when there are two servers, one bartender/Manager, and one chef serving 4 diners? Our main server was very nice and explained how to use the raclette and provided cheese recommendations.

Ambiance: Newly renovated with trendy decor. I really liked the wallpaper design on the back wall with images of dark chandeliers on a rosy backdrop. Very parisien and chic. There were two tables of two's out by the large front window, wrap around bar seating, and several elevated tables of two's and four's along the side. Very cozy space and nice heritage building. Unfortunately, the neighbourhood is not gentrified yet so the proprietors are taking a huge gamble. During our dinner, we witnessed a drug deal occurring right in front of us and several prostitutes and binners walking by. Don't look out if you want to maintain that feel good ambiance.

Value: My personal view is that when I go out for a meal, I expect some sort of cooking or culinary expertise. Instead, we paid a premium to sit in pretty place to eat cheese and cured meats easily purchased next door (which they own by the way), for double/triple the cost. Granted the value-add may have been higher if we were in a big group or if the place was livelier. At least I could justify the cost as entertainment expenses. Our bill for two: $100; included two "entrees", two drinks, tips & tax. Could've gone to Jules, Chambar, or Les Faux for that.

If you like to sample wide variety of cheese and hang out with wine sipping buddies, probably not a bad place. If you're looking for a real meal, probably not your best bet.

Strathcona Style

My partner and I had long fantasized about a cheese restaurant opening in Vancouver, having been to a fabulous one in New York a couple of years ago.

Were we ever thrilled when one opened just blocks from our Strathcona home!

If you appreciate cheese, wine by the glass, and a delicious array of goodies and tantalizing tidbits - you must give Au Petit Chavignol a try! The ambiance is sleek and sophisticated, and a visit to the shop next door will yield an amazing selection of culinary wonders to make your next get together or romantic night-in a sensual success.

Decent Food/Wine, Poor Service
By BryanCon of Vancouver (1 Review)

Went to check out Au Petit Chavignol with some wine loving friends who were in town. We split a cheese tasting plate, which was quite good, and the wine selection was also excellent (or so my friends told me - not a bid wine drinker myself). However, I would not recommend this restaurant based on the service alone. We recevied service that was somewhere in between unfriendly and downright hostile. Server was dismissive and rude. Go to Salt instead.
