Athene's has been serving authentic Greek fare in a lively atmosphere for over 25 years.
Service was excellent considering how busy they were at the time. Food was outstanding and the portion sizes were decent as well. We had a great time. If you're looking for a really quiet place to have dinner though then I would suggest going on a weekday because weekends are usually packed. We waited about 20 minutes for a table so I would consider making reservations on the weekend for sure. All in all we had a great time. Loved the owner/manager? He was very charming and took great care of us all.
Went to Athene's on Christmas Eve with Entertainment Book coupons. If you go there keep in mind that they will only allow your group to use a maximum of two coupons.
The atmosphere was decent although the decor did not represent Greece at all. Staff was friendly and service was surprisingly quick.
Overall the food was nothing special. The deep-fried calamari was lacking flavour. The chicken souvlaki however was really, really tasty. The only problem is that the portion is way too small especially for a Greek restaurant. I ordered a "large" which one would think would come with two skewers but apparently it's just ONE bigger skewer. I would hate to see the size of a small chicken souvlaki at Athene's! The rice was not particularly good; a little lacking in the taste department and the tzatziki felt a little bit too thick for our liking.
Overall the restaurant was ok...nothing spectacular. The chicken souvlaki tasted incredible...too bad it seemed like it belonged on the kids-size menu. You can find better Greek elsewhere for sure but if you have an entertainment coupon you could give Athene's a try. Just don't bring a big appetite!
I was really impressed with this restaurant. So much so that I've been back many times. The food is consistently delicious with nice generous portions. The beef souvalki is amazing and so is their Mousaka and their saganaki. The restaurant is always busy and sometimes you need to wait in-line on the weekends if you don't have a reservation. The owner is Greek and he is someone who cares about the service and he makes you feel as if you are stepping into his livingroom rather then just some restaurant. I will keep going back to the restaurant for sure!
Been there a few years back, and decided to go again since it is in the entertainment book. While presenting the coupon before ordering, the waiter (maybe manager) told us they don't take coupons on mother's day, despite the fact it is clearly indicated that the coupon is valid "anytime". Hugely disappointed that I could not use a coupon that I paid for. Nonetheless, the waitress needs to be praised for attending to us and making sure we are having a good meal. The food is below average comparing to Toronto Danforth. Other local Greek restaurants are recommended, where the food is just as good and is willing to honor their coupons.
My wife and I decided to try Athene's after seeing the crowds it always seems to draw. As it turns out, that was a big mistake. We started out with humous as an appetizer - though the portion was large, that couldn't make up for the lackluster, overly garlicky flavour. For dinner, my wife had the lamb shoulder dinner special and I had the moussaka. Both included rice which was devoid of flavor, burned, dry potatoes and vegetables which were supposed to have been cooked, but were certainly not. My wife's lamb was decently tender, but so stringy and salty as to render it virtually inedible. My moussaka was dry, overspiced and generally lackluster in the extreme.
To add to the poor food quality, the decor is simply stunning in its cheesiness and failure to convey any sense of authenticity. All in all, this is definitely one simply to walk past without stopping. Either the rest of these reviews were posted by staff, or I went on an EXTREMELY off night; either way it's a solid three thumbs down from me.
I've been to Athene's many times and each time I am never disappointed. They have always been consistent and food quality is always excellent. My favorite is the roasted potatoes that come with most dishes. Amazing!!! The rice pilaf is never soft and mushy like other places, and their soulvakis are never overcooked and dry. Service is as good as it can be depending on how busy it is, but doesn't compare to the worse ones out there. There is a coupon in the entertainment book, so go try it out.
My family and I have been going to this restaurant for over 20 years. It still serves up the best Greek Food in all of Kit’s. I’ve tried other Greek Restaurants in Kit’s but I find Athene’s is the one that always remains consistent with the quality of their food. The portions are decent and the service is always great. The restaurant gets busy on weekends so reservations are recommended. The owner of the restaurant, Kostas has been with the restaurant now for about 15 years and every time my family goes there he makes us feel welcome and appreciated.
