A Kitsilano favourite, Annapurna's all vegetarian menu serves up reasonably priced, rich and satisfying Indian cuisine. Recently moved a block down the street.
We enjoyed a wonderful meal at Annapurna!
For all those who love Indian food, this is a restaurant not to be missed!
The service was attentive and genuine, the food was delicious, and the ambiance was cozy with good views of downtown and west 4th. We would definitely return again soon.
Recommendations: the veggie pakoras, butter 'chicken' and palak paneer.
We had mixed reviews from friends regarding this restaurant, so we were not sure what to expect.
We ordered a lot of food for two people: two orders of pakoras (cheese and veggie), two breads (aloo paratha and garlic naan), and two main dishes(the spinach with paneer and the lentil bean cakes in a vinegar tomato sauce). The food tasted delicious -- every dish we ordered seemed to be perfectly prepared and exactly the right level of spice. Other people said that the portions are small, but we found that we could not finish everything we had ordered and we are very big eaters. I do think the cheese pakoras were overpriced for the portion, other than that everything else was fairly portioned and priced. We will definitely be eating here again.
We like the many selections of vegetarian dishes available at this restaurant. Most of the ones we've tried have been very good. The prices are also quite reasonable and the portions are ample. However, the last time we were in, service was very slow even though it was a weekday evening with just a few diners. The waiter or the kitchen also mixed up our orders so that some dishes ordered mild turned up very hot, while others ordered hot were delivered mild. The people at the table next to us had the same problem. We'll probably give the place another go because the owner is very nice, seems very concerned, and hopefully will have the problem fixed by then.
On trips to Vancouver we always try to include a visit or take away from Annapurna. The food is always good quality and consistent, the prices good and the service reliable.
The restaurant is now under new ownership and the new owner seems very keen to continue offering high quality vegetarian/vegan fare.
If you are looking for a pleasant, affordable meal check out Annapurna!
Restaurant with really friendly staff. The portions are getting bigger its really amazing, and the food was really blended with Indian spices. The Vegetable Pakoras were a great start to the meal with two great sauces to dip into. Highly recommended if you're looking for a casual night out in Kits(don't forget Annapurna vegetarian).
Annapurna has variety of vegetarian food. it is not expensive. all food I tasted is delicious. I noticed that service is getting better and courteous, at the same time food was aromatic. Owner told me that Annapurna uses top of the line spices. specially the Naan was well baked and so was Bhurta (eggplant). I would like to visit again.
I love Indian food, and I think they do it right here.
The menu is limited, however.
I like that they can prepare dishes in a vegan manner, but many non-vegetarian Indian restaurants have a more extensive list of vegetarian dishes, so I think that this restaurant doesn't really excel in terms of that 'niche'.
I wouldn't really care to go back, just because nothing really seemed that special for me here.
We have been going here for years. The food is always delicious. The eggplant, onion & cilantro nann & the chickpeas are soooooo good. Don't go if you are in a rush to be somewhere...service can be slow and relaxed. Staff are friendly & knowledgeable. It really is worth trying.
I found everything to be absolutely drenched in oil, and the portions are tiny. It just doesn't compare to all the other great Indian restaurants in the city.
We ordered tofu paratha (very oily), the hot potato salad (all potatoes and maybe 2 tomato pieces), vegetable kofta (very oily, too spicy and just not good) and this chickpea battered and deepfried eggplant appetizer (no flavour). Also, all of the deserts contained milk, so unfortunately not vegan friendly.
The service is ok, the waiters are eager to please and kind, but the wait times for food are quite slow even when it isn't busy.
I won't be returning, ever.
The server was very friendly and polite, but only one for several tables.
The menu was clear and nicely presented.
The breads which were not included in the prices were OK, but not much was given.
We found the food tasty, but the portions were very small.
Overall we found the prices too high for the amounts of food given.
We only came here because we had an Entertainment Book Coupon. When we informed them that we would be using the discount they treated us like lepers!
We were originally excited to try an all vegetarian indian place but we were quite disappointed. The food was just average and the service was well below average. The staff was unfriendly and unattentive.
This place is really not worth your time and you're better off going to another indian place.
Visit #1: Great experience. Staff were eager to point out which dishes were vegan, the food was tasty, and the service was pleasant.
Visit #2: Nice enough. I enjoyed the food; my dining companion found the cauliflower dish too spicy, though we were assured it was not especially hot.
Visit #3: Took my nonvegetarian mum here after raving about my initial tasty experience. We had a coupon, which we presented upon ordering. This was apparently the catalyst for the staff to take our order, bring the food, then completely ignore us for the rest of the meal.
After eating, we sat for probably half an hour, unable to get anyone to come over, pack up our leftovers, and get us our bill. It was before the dinner rush and there were few other diners in there.
The food on this occasion was slightly salty and uninspiring. Despite being fully vegetarian, they seem not to have figured out a substitute for butter on their flatbreads, so if you're vegan, expect your bread to arrive bland and dry. I won't be going back. Pity; it started out so promisingly.
vegan indian food is almost impossible to find - so thank you annapurna! sure the service is slow, and the bathroom sure could use a paint job.. but otherwise the vibe is warm and relaxing, the food is delicious, the price is right and most importantly, i can eat there!
they should mark what is vegan - or can be made vegan - on the menu..but i am just glad its possible. although its easy to find vegetarian indian food, finding it without ghee or butter or cheese of any kind is almost impossible.
this place has been a real treat. i recommend the mustard greens.
We went for Dinner one evening of Sept when we were visiting Vancouver. We were attracted by "Vegetarian" attribute of the restaurant.
The Service - was below average. We had two place setting between 4 of us. After we got our first Appetizers, we had to ask for additional 2 sets. Nobody ask for Drinks nor water.
Food Quality - Poor.
We ordered 4 en trees. 1 of which came 'Stinking'. When we complaint, they just took it away without any apology, regret or information.
Again after waiting for 10 min we gave up the idea of getting a replacement and ordered additional en tree to which they said 'The replacement is coming' - Wow - What a Communication!
Overall the food was no way near the definition of "Authentic" and not well presentable either.
Ambiance: Although the use of "Paper Globes Lights" (Do not know what else to call) - was inviting. It was too dark a lighting.
Value: Not a very good value for money. We did not even get replacement free nor they gave any discounts.
We had to catch a flight so we did not bother to negotiate.
All in all - Avoid this restaurant at any cost. Their are many much better options if you drive another 10 minutes from this place on Main Street and 48th Street area.
Upon stepping in from a rainy evening, what I noticed first was warm, subdued lighting from paper lanterns covering the ceiling and then acknowledgement by the server. Seating was immediate, order taken soon after, food arrived in a timely manner, and my water glass was refilled as needed. For me, Bhindi (okra) is a test dish for an Indian restaurant, and this one passed easily. I enjoyed it with a fresh hot chapati while I noticed one family seated around combined tables and another, with well-behaved children, waiting on the couch by the door. I dine alone, and that's another test: will staff gracefully give up a second cover at my table? No problem here. Traditional music was quiet enough for a conversation but loud enough to provide privacy. I came away feeling fortunate that Annapurna is in my neighbourhood.
A group of us went here for dinner the other night. We walked into a warm inviting restaurant. We liked the kitchy lamps hanging from the ceiling and all of the mirrors. We ordered 6 dishes, 3 appys, naan bread and papadams in total. All the food was tasty, especially the kofta balls but I would warn that the medium heat is more like a hot in western standards. And considering we ordered 6 entrees the servings were more on the small side, we could have ordered more. We generally had a nice time, but they played the same strange song over and over and over again the entire time we were there which made us go a little batty at times. There was no real check in to see how we were doing or to ask if we needed anything more, (We were the only table there, other than the owners) but they were nice and kept our waters full.
Overall I was not wow'd but did have a pleasant time. Not to sure if I would go back when there are so many other Indian restaurants to choose from but not a bad choice in a pinch.
the kofta (i think that is how you spell it?) was really good- veggie dumplings served in a cheesy spicy sauce that was very unsual but delicious. thankfully someone reccomended the dish as we entered becuase it was worth it. the chaat appetizer however was less than desirable- lots of sour cream over fried bits of bread and some sugary spice. it was not worth even the cheap appetizer price. the service is sloooooow and bad...don't come thristy as you may not get a water refil.
This place is nicely located in Kitsilano. You will either have to pay for parking on 4th or walk a few blocks. The area is great for browsing.
Our waiter attended to us immediately, but then took a while to take orders. The food didn't take long to arrive, though.
We ordered veg pakoras, naan, raita, and orders of palak paneer and mutter paneer. The food was wonderful. For the lunch special the whole thing was about 30% less which was nice, and allowed us to try more things. The main dishes come with rice at lunch so there was almost too much food, but we finished it.
This is one of the few Indian restaurants with vegan and tofu dishes.
The decor was nice but nothing special. Bathrooms are clean. Staff were pleasant. My only complaint was the rather slow service Maybe it's better in the evening if the place is busier. Between serving us, the waiter sat in the kitchen talking to the cook. Even after we had long finished our food, he didn't ask if we wanted anything else or offer the bill -- I walked up to the bar to ask.
Anyway, we loved the food and are looking forward to trying more dishes.
Stopped at Annapurna on a whim after walking by on the street. The food was amazingly tasty and very reasonably priced ... I say this even though I am a carnivore and can be a bit picky. I highly recommend the Naan bread (cilantro and onion especially). While the serving sizes aren't huge the food is very filling, and I couldn't eat my entire meal. The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxed ... the service can be a bit slow but they were never rude. I'm definitely going back!
I've been here twice now and have really enjoyed my meals on both visits. The curries are so tasty.....we have them medium/mild and they have just the right amount of spice....not too hot.
Both times we have been for dinner during the week. The first time, the restaurant was almost packed, the second time, just a few tables were occupied. I never found it to be too loud and their Indian style/piano music adds a nice touch to the atmosphere.
The service could be a little better, but really it's nothing worth complaining about.
My only big wish is that there were some vegan desserts on the menu!!
