Good Food but poor server
By lesmark of burnaby (72 Reviews)

I've been going to this place on and off for the past twelve years. Unfortunately they have now removed their weekend brunch special. Yes - the owners are Asian but I can tell you that the food is better than Las Margaritas and better than Pepitas.

I was disappointed in the male server. Very little customer service experience and pro-employer as opposed to pro-customer. It should be noted that the servers often change at this place.

Mexican or Chinese?
By epicurious of Burnaby, BC (507 Reviews)

I went to Andales in the summertime and was a little confused. The cashier, hostess, servers were all sisters of a Chinese family! They were doing their homework at the cashier's desk between serving customers. The chef/owner was their dad.
I thought the food was ho-hum and felt bad for the girls' interrupted studies.

Nothing to write homa about

I went here for the first time recently, not knowing what to expect. The server was very attentive but not pushy, but the food was rather disappointing. It would have been in the not bad at all category except for the chicken gravy on the quesadillas! Afterwards all I could taste was that gravy, and it wasn't the home-made variety, either. Other than that, it would have been fine but not really noteworthy. $20.00 for one dinner and one beer.

I don't know what's so terrible about this place, I love it.
Loved it, rather. It appears to have closed. :(
Does anyone know if the one on broadway is the same?

I really enjoyed their chicken chimichanga and my boyfriend loved the polo loco...
I LOVE the salad dressing they make in house, as well as the salsa.

I wanna try the one on broadway but wanna know if is indeed the same place.

Keeps Me Coming Back!

I have been dining here for over 3 years and have only ever had great dining experiences. Of all things, the highlight for me has to be the homemade salsa. Lime Margaritas are always outstanding and no matter what meal choice we make, we are always pleased. On average I eat here about twice a month and have even got to know some of the serving staff by name!

i have been going to this restaurant for very long time and i think that the food was great. Maybe because i always have a craving for mole poblano. i really like it because its little bit spicy and have the chocolate taste to it. i think its best to put salsa on top of it (just to give it a little kick) to make this clear.... its black boiled beans, not refried beans (I ask them at the beginning when I started to go there). Plus i have been going there almost every once a month with my friends, sometimes even more. i have never experience food poisoning, but sometimes it could have been tooo much sangria in my system or any other alcohol. The serves is ok, not to pushy. (yes, i know that this restaurant isn’t Mexican own, but i really like the food, plus it doesn’t matter the nationality) the price is reasonable. i found that its sometimes busy not always.

Decent All Around
By Starscream of Toronto, Ontario (1 Review)
Submitted Friday, July 25, 2008 - 12:53pm [Dine in]

I visit Vancouver at least 2- 3 times a month, and I must say out of all the Latino themed restaurants, this is definitely one of the better ones. For Mexican food, I would say this is the best in Vancouver. The servers are friendly (it doesn't matter where they are from...really.. c'mon guys) and consistent in their delivery. The food is always hot and always yummy. Decent bang for your buck all things considered.

Soggy tacos anyone...?
By noah1234 of Vancouver (2 Reviews)

I wanted to like this mexican restraunt, however, I left feeling dissapointed. Let me explain. I ordered their Chicken Taco plate. The tacos didn't taste fresh - they tasted soggy and lacked flavour. No tomatoes, no sour cream, no cheddar cheese, no salsa, and no other fixings that make a taco taste great and fresh. The tacos did come smeared with a brown sauce of some sort? I will never go back to this place because of my negative experience. If you are expecting tacos just like home, save yourself the dissapointment and just make them yourself.

I thought this place was Mexican? Why is the chef and the owner and everyone there Chinese? They kept talking to each other in Chinese it's so annoying. The food was OK. I had the quesadillas and they were decent. Nothing special but fills u. Service and ambience sucks.

Who cares what nationality the staff is (from the last review!)!? They make good mexican food and great portions for a good price. Way better than the yuppie Las Margs in Kits - that place is SO overrated! Andales is great.

My Last Visit Here
By mcnite of Vancouver (20 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, October 19, 2008 - 8:41pm [Dine in]

We've been to Andale's on Davie a couple of times when the need for Mexican becomes too great and we either don't want to try Lolita's or need alcohol so can't go for the great Casa Blanca fare. This time it was a mistake.

The food tasted okay (not good) but we were both sick the next day. Sorry, but poisoning your customers is no way to get repeat business. I guess that's why they aren't busy, although it could also be the bland food.

Cold food, cold service
By sowen222 of Mount Pleasant, Vancouver (3 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, September 2, 2006 - 1:37pm [Dine in]

The tortilla soup was served luke-warm, and the main course lukewise. When I told the waiter that everything was cool, he took away my plate, and returned within a minute: he'd only added more rice and beans, not (re)heated anything. The extra rice and beans were still only luke-warm, and the burrito was cold by this point. When I said so, he implied I was lying by saying, "I don't know how hot you want it, I can't make it any hotter," and wouldn't do anything about it.

The beef burrito was bland, and had a questionable consistancy inside, which tasted more like there was some chicken skin amongst the beef, but it was dark, and I really didn't care to find out at that point.

The "Tequila Gold" lime margarita tasted like it had been made from tequila and Sprite.

I love Mexican food, but I was extremely disappointed by Andales.

Weak Mexican
By bearpaw of West End, Vancouver (23 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, February 16, 2007 - 1:41pm [Dine in]

I have been twice, and been disappointed twice. This is the kind of flavor one would expect if you went to Safeway, bought all the packaged "Mexicasa" food, and cooked it yourself. Mushy beans, sauces were way too watery, the tacos and burritos were soggy and very bland. Cheesy mexican themed decor does not equal a good restaurant.

I am still looking for a good Mexican restaurant in Vancouver, this is not it.

After an absence of several years, I was pleasantly surprised on a revisit to Andales. The food is much improved, and I very much enjoyed the taste. It is not outstanding, however. The service was appropriately invisible, and the ambience is appropriate. I intend to revisit and may yet change my food ranking to 4.

Only for Tourists
By eagoni of Yaletown, Vancouver (3 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, December 19, 2008 - 4:59pm [Dine in]

I'm feeling good not being the only one who felt sick at the other day after eating here. The prices are a bit high for our expectations. I order the tortilla soup, PLEASE dont do that. The taste was... asian flavoured chicken soup with raw torillas and pieces of the worst part of the chicken.
Then I tried the chorizo with cheese, that indeed was cheese but without chorizo! Instead a different kind of tasteless sausage. The people I went with ordered soft quesadillas, they had KFC-taste-like-gravy at the top and the side beans smelled and tasted funny.
The only thing I can recommend fot this place is the cafe de hoya.
The decor was outstanding, is the typical mexican restaurant for tourists. You should try it if you want to drink Corona or Pacifico beers.

Bland Food and Poor Service
By temphier of Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Thursday, October 23, 2008 - 11:27pm [Dine in]

Their chicken enchilada was bland, the rice tasted like it was from a school cafeteria, and the beans like were straight from the can instead of re-fried. I've become accustomed to eating authentic Mexican fare from the States, so the meal was a disappointment. Also, the person who served us acted as if she did not enjoy her job. Fortunately, my husband and I found out about the restaurant through the Entertainment book, so it was an inexpensive test.

About as good as Mexican gets in Vancouver
By nbo of Vancouver, BC (9 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, June 15, 2006 - 2:37pm [Dine in]

I have been to Andales countless times. I always thought the food was fairly good (never great because I have eaten Mexican food in the US many times and nothing here compares). I assumed there must be better Mexican food in Vancouver so I decided to try out some other restaurants only to learn that Andales is actually the best so far.

I have been to Las Margaritas, Pepitas, and Primo's Mexican Grill. Las Margaritas was the only restaurant whose food I thought was as good or perhaps better (with some dishes) but not by much. Although Las Margaritas does has a more extensive menu I did not think it was worth the wait. If you do not want to wait in line for more than an hour and truly want to eat Mexican food then go to Andales.

And just to respond to the other reviews - yes the owners are Asian but most of the Mexican restaurants owned in Vancouver are not Mexican family run restaurants.
