Hubby and I came here on a Groupon Now just trying to find a quick place to eat dinner. The restaurant was totally empty, which was not a great atmosphere....but the food was pretty good! I admittedly don't really know anything about Mexican food, but I got the chicken fajitas, and I loved it. The ingredients on the grill were served fresh and hot and very tasty. Side dishes weren't anything special but not bad. Hubby had bean and cheese chimichangas and quite enjoyed it as well. They also gave us some free nachos and salsa which weren't very excellent but at least its extra food...? The server was nice, got us everything very quickly (though maybe just because it was only us!) It was pricier than expected, but also the portions were pretty generous! All in all, I'd go back again, think more people ought to at least try the place out!
Went with my family today and a Groupon.
As soon as I looked at the menu, I was shocked at the prices. I sat there thinking to myself, well there's a decent amount of people here so it must be good.
I was more wrong than Harold Camping and the doomsday prediction.
We ordered the nachos, chimichanga and the 11-layer with chicken. Nachos weren't any better than the tortilla chips they give you as a complementary snack. The 11-layer with chicken was LACKING chicken. I think there were only 2 bite sizes of meat in a pool of sour cream and guac. The chimichanga I can't really complain about though. We ordered the beef and it was quite delicious. In general though, the food was by far not worth the price granted I am not a regular of Mexican food.
The service was super poor. A number of times when we wanted to grab their attention to get the bill or ask for water, there seemed to be a lack of acknowledgement or awareness to their customers. Everyone on our side of the restaurant knew we were trying to get their attention for a straight 5 mins. After we paid (and presented with the coupon), the waiter we had did not give a crap for how we felt about everything (I think it was because of the coupon). There were no "thank yous", no "enjoy your evening", no smiles or any sort of acknowledgements of any kind. The restaurant was small enough to know when people are leaving so as we left, it felt like we left a highschool party that we weren't invited to. I don't expect too much but a simple gesture of appreciation is not just part of business, its common sense.
Thank you Groupon for ruining my night.
Andale's served us rotten food. Literally.
The 11 layer dip and bean/cheese quesadilla tasted of mold and when I brought it to the server's attention, he insisted I was wrong and that all the food was made fresh even though it arrived at our table in less than 2 minutes, lukewarm.
I was forced to spit out my mouthful of dip because it tasted so rancid.
Our server was "Bill", who told us "nobody else has complained all day," discrediting our complaint. We are extremely disgusted and unsatisfied and will never go back.
Even with a Groupon, it wasn't worth it. The portions were tiny for the price we paid; when I get food poisoning, I'll know who to blame.
Blech.
We tried this restaurant tonight on a Groupon.
The service was ok, they seemed quite jolly. There were certainly more staff than there were customers!
The ambiance was ok although the decor was quite tacky. Everything looked clean at least.
We ordered the Chicken Enchilada and Chicken Chimichanga. It was a bit strange that the food arrived in less than 2 minutes after we ordered it. I had a tomato on my plate and it was warmer than the Chimichanga, when the food arrived it was luke warm and just a minute later it was fairly cold. It had probably been warmed up in a microwave...but not quite enough.
The food tasted really bad, the worst Mexican food we ever had. In fact, we've had better Mexican food from a ready meal bought in Safeway!
They asked if I wanted a box for my leftovers, I said no, they took my plate away and within a minute they had boxed the leftovers for me. I couldn't be bothered to argue with them but the leftovers went into a garbage bin a block away.
$15.99 for a bad tasting and semi-cold Chimichanga is not what I call value for money.
Craving something akin to Mexican with the clock ticking my gf and I decided to try out Andales. We've past by it many times and it never seemed to lure us in but we knew what not to get our hopes up and dove in.
It's dark, ultra dark with a lot of knick-knack items about. Some of the tables are inconspicuous and can easily be missed by servers.
The menu looked farily daunting, but we quickly settled with the mole and the beef burrito. Entrees come with chips and salsa which we found to be quite tasty and with some zing. The mole came with a huge unboned chicken breast which looked a little unnerving, but we care more about taste. The mole was actually pretty good, mildly spicy but with a sweet kick. My beef burrito was pretty decent also. The shredded beef was a little bland but the brown sauce brought a little something to the game. It came with some meager sides consisting of a spoonful of black beans and rice and a green salad.
Service was pretty sparce and our server seemed uncomfortable but was friendly enough. End result? Don't go to a Mexican or pseudo-Mexican resutarant for their service.
The food wasn't mindshattering but it'll do for pseudo-Mexicano cuisine in Vancouver.
Have not eaten here several years ago and recall dark chicken meat, it took me some time to try it again.
I did use a Entertainment book coupon and went once more. There was no issues with the coupon and
the service was fine. We decided on no drinks and we were not hasstled about this. The food was actually
pretty good. We were almost the only customers as I have noted walking by that 30% occupency is busy
for this restaurant. The service and food were fine this go-around.
Oh- again the chicken burrito was dark meat, but was fine. We decided we will go back without a coupon.

While dining here at lunch today, my husband and I realized that we had been dining at this restaurant for nearly 23 years. We really love the food, ambiance, and the service. We love the fajitas, chimichangas, taquitos, chips and salsa, steak, and their garlic prawns dish. We are never disappointed. It is a nice casual dining experience and it is nice to support a local business. We return as much as we can. We highly recommend this restaurant!
We stopped in because we were in the neighborhood. There were two front end staff, the server seemed overwhelmed. We had to ask for a cloth to clean off the table. She seemed oblivious to its condition. She brought us a pitcher of sangria that had a long string of unidentifiable "slime" in the neck of the carafe. The male server's response was "gross" as I returned it to him.We chose not to order any drinks. We should have left at that point. As the place filled up the wait staff seemed less capable and the place was obviously understaffed. The food, when it did come, was a poor semblance of mexican. Tacos with a gravy covering them? What region of mexico did this originate in? After running a mexican reataurant for ten years I have to say this is the worst representation of mexican food this side of the mexican border and the owners should be embarrased by the slop they are serving.
The enchiladas came with brown chicken meat wrapped in a tortilla in a gravy sauce (no spice).... still yet the service was worse. I had to wait 10 minutes after asking for the hot sauce to arrive... we had to ask everytime for a coffee refill. I lived in Mexico and am a good judge of Mexican cuisine, my modest expectectations were dashed.
So, I've been wanting to try this place because I was a HUGE fan of the one on davie street.
It wasn't too far off from davie but this is what I noticed:
The sides were SUPER stingy- rice was maybe a half scoop, barely any.. and the beans were lame too.
And the salad, i LOOVEED the salad, but there was hardly and dressing on this salad and it was less appetizing... it was just a little bit lousy in comparison.
Although, the waiter did offer more chips and salsa which was great...
but... It was a bit disappointing.
I hope they read some of these reviews and up their game even just a little bit... Plus their prices are higher so you would think it would be a bit better.
so that's my review.
We had dinner this evening and restaurant was not very busy. The waiteress took our order and we got the wrong items. The cook had mixed up our order which was not a problem for us as we had to wait an extra 10mins to get our other dinner entre. She did not apoloize for the mistake. the food was very average not wortth the $$$ they were charging. At the end we used our enteraintment coupon and she told us that we ned to tip her 20%. I told myself RIGHT!!. If the serive was outstanding then I would but not for average food and service. Not a good way to run a restaurant.
I would suggest don't try this place as there are many other mexican restaurants in the city.
This restaurant overcharges people. They added items to our bill - extra pitchers etc. They charged the regular price for the drinks when they were on special. The owner is a crook! Told a customer his bill was $29 when it was in fact $20. They increase the prices and quantities of the items you consume so that you won't notice it. Buyer Beware! We won't be going back.
This is our first time trying Mexican cuisine and didn't have much expectations. As we went in, the service was very casual. Our table had not been cleaned and we had to pointed it out to the waitress.
We ordered 2 entrees with Lamb as the main item. The dishes were good and portions were more than generous.
Overall the restaurant was fairly clean and the atmosphere was good. We had a fairly good experience. As long as you don't mind the lack of service, then it's worth trying.
We've become regulars at this little mexican place. We go there for their cheviche and their delicious chicken breasts. Their enchiladas as also very good. My boyfriend can usually finish his meals there but I always end up taking at least half of mine home.
Drink wise, I would suggest you stay away from the blended drinks (especially the pina coladas). When they brought me my pina colada, it wasn't the white, coconutty, creamy drink that I love. It was sort of off-white, thin, chunky and just didn't taste right. The boyfriends gynormous corona would have been a better choice.
Service is good. No complaints there.
My boyfriend and I had the two for one coupon from the Entertainment Book, so we thought we'd given it a try. We've gone twice since.
The food is always good and the service is excellent.
We haven't had any negative experiences so far.
My experience at Andales was pretty solid, from the service to the food. It's a dim, cozy little place, one that had the feel of a family restaurant.
Our server was a bit late with taking our order, but by the time our food came (which wasn't that long of a wait) all was forgiven. The fajitas were great, with lots of fresh guacamole. The chicken enchiladas were also really good, with a nice cheesy ancho sauce. We paid just under 25 bucks for two very decent meals with the entertainment coupon. I will be back.
"Andales"... that's how. I found nothing horribly wrong with the place, but nothing horribly exciting either. Nothing stood out... not even a nacho chip. The food is also very "gringo-friendly", so if you're looking for that kickass authentic fare that you ended up paying for on the flight home from Cabo, this isn't the place for you.
We were originally planning to go to Topanga as I was craving enchiladas. We got there after 8pm and there was a huge lineup. We were too starved to wait, so we went to Andale.
I've been here a couple of times before, but both with Entertainment coupons which made the meals worthwhile. But when you have to pay $15 for two paltry tortillas stuffed with dark meat chicken...it's really not worth it.
Why these Mexican restaurants feel the need to decorate in such gaudy manner is beyond me. It was okay in the 80's but it's time for a bit of updating (and some dusting!)
The whole experience was "just okay", and for me, $15 is a bit much for "just okay" enchiladas.
I'm reading these reviews of Andale's, which I haven't been to in a while, and they're unfortunately confirming what I've only just heard - namely, that this restaurant that I used to love has changed hands and deteriorated considerably. If that's the case I'm really sorry to hear that as it was once one of the better places around for real Mexican. So, if people are confused or it sounds contradictory - that's why.
From the get go we were disappointed with Andales because we had made a reservation for the small outdoor patio area in order to enjoy some summer weather. When we arrived no table was reserved and they had no notion of one even being made.
We had one order of chicken enchiladas and chorizo quesadillas. Both were very bland and unappealing. The chicken resembled left overs from a previous nights dinner and the chorizo didn't seem cooked properly. Both were just surprisingly bland with no flavour and no appeal to the senses.
The accompanying rice and beans were good, but too small. While the chips and salsa were a nice touch, the only real saving grace was the mango margarita on special.
To make matters worse the price for the food was way too much as well.
We would recommend Los Margaritas, which has better tasting food for the same price, or make something better at home.
