The American Cheesesteak Company is a contemporary take on the cheesesteak sub shop, bringing the tradition of cheesesteak to the West Coast.
Was out for a walk downtown and craving some lunch. Walked past this establishment on Davie Street and decided to try.
One orders at the cashier, pay up front and they give you a number to carry to your table. The server finds you and gives you your food when it's ready.
I ordered the six inch Classic ($9), a bottle of Cream Soda($4) and a small ACC fries (with garlic, parmessan cheese and parsley) ($5) and a truffle mayo dipping sauce for the fries ($1)
Total is $17 plus tax.
Although the bottled Cream Soda was high end and tasty, I might just take water next time. The water is located in jugs at the condiment station and has lemon added to it. As the sandwich is already a little pricey - I will save the $3 on my next visit.
The fries were a little too greasy - although otherwise well flavoured. The truffle mayo dipping sauce was actually quite good. Notwithstanding that - I would probably skip these on a return visit and save an additional $5 (including dipping sauce).
The Classic Cheesesteak sandwich was quite good. Heavily laden with shaved Prime Rib, some sauteed onions (which are optional and free of charge) and the mushrooms and provolene cheese was very tasty. There is bottles of hot sauce available at the condiment station if one wants to spice it up a bit.
I might drop by if in the area and craving meat. I would just stick to the sandwich and not bother with the other items to keep lunch at a reasonable price (under $15 including taxes).
As vast as Vancouver is in terms of cuisine choices, foods like this always take an agonizing time to get here, if they do at all. Finally, we have a standalone Philly cheesesteak joint.
Its location is just off the high foot traffic path of Granville and honestly it's a bit inconspicuous from the outside. Once inside, there are hints of showiness throughout with the deliberate chalkboard menu, vinyl stools and exposed brick accents. Still, the place looks great.
To get a bit of everything, my gf went with the small 6" Bifteck which added caramelized onion jam, brie, arugula and dijon. We found the hints of jam and dijon lacking as the richness of the brie did its best to manhandle the copious amount of shaved prime rib. The drizzling of balsamic over the arugula was a nice touch and helped back off the heaviness of the sandwich as a whole. I went with the classic Philly which was simply beef and provolone. Personally, we found the shaved beef underseasoned but the fresh rolls they used were fantastic with a soft and slightly chewy texture. Portions seem scant but they are actually quite generous as fullness and satisfaction creeps up on you. We also picked up the onion rings which had coarse salt sprinkled over the top - a great idea but too salty overall. The onion rings themselves were quite crispy for the battered variety while the ACC fries tossed with garlic, parmesan and parsley were mostly forgettable. They lacked crispiness and the additional ingredients provided no added punch. Prices seem expensive, but in the end it was comparable to the price of a couple of burgers, fries and drinks.
They run a numbering system which is orderly and while it is distinctly self-serve on the whole if you dine in, the staff do try to bring your order to your table and will clear off empties regularly.
I will defer from commenting on how authentic these cheesesteaks stack up to the ones from the city of brotherly love but if you like sandwiches, especially ones with a pile of meat, little to no vegetation on fresh bread with that touch of greasiness, you'll enjoy American Cheesesteak.
After reading about American Cheesesteak Company here I dropped by yesterday to try out their grub.
No welcome by the staff as I entered the shop, just stares like "what you waiting for order something?".
After looking over the wall mounted menu I opted for one of the least expensive sandwiches, The Earth.
The Earth consisted of roasted red peppers, field and other mushrooms, a pesto sauce and feta cheese.
I was asked by the rather "cold" girl behind the counter if I wanted the 9" version and because I was hungry I went for it. After tax the sandwich came out to be $12.32. No sides like coleslaw, no fries, not even a pickle.
To me that is a very expensive sandwich and that happens to be one of the cheaper options on their menu.
They give you a number and have you sit down somewhere in the restaurant to await your order. In a very reasonable amount of time my sandwich was delivered by a girl who said nothing to me, not a smile , not even a word like "here is your sandwich", she just plunked it down on the table and took away my number.
As for the sandwich I give it a 'solid'. Not mind blowing but a decent size packed with ingredients like the mushrooms although some of the mushrooms were very chewy and difficult to eat. There was a decent amount of feta on this pipping hot sandwich too. Half way through my meal I wondered to myself why I went the vegan route and thought that I would prefer something with a bit of meat.
It seems if the staff know you they are friendly . Another customer arrived who obviously had been there before or knows some of the staff. They were very friendly to this person. As a newbie to American Cheesesteak everyone seemed a little standoffish and cold but what can you do tips aren't involved here.
I left the restaurant as i entered, ignored by the staff. Not a thank you or come again. This might sound petty to some but it tickles me off. Will I come again? Not sure at this point, if I do I most definitely will try a sandwich with some meat, however I'll have to save up some money for that.
the phillies are good ,but are expensive two sandwich a order of fries and two drinks 42 bucks for counter service OUCH ! I guess thats why the place always seems to have more staff working than customers and at this rate I dont see much of a future for this place as last friday they had 6 staff working and only 5 customers and with all the press this place has had and it still sits empty poor location choice I think also as it near crack alley central I wonder who's poor idea it was to open there and im sure they are regretting it right now!
Been there twice now for lunch. Each time 3 of us invaded. 1st time me and a couple girls from work 2nd time all guys, me Dad and Bro. Both times we ordered our sandwich of choice and shared the garlic/ parmesan fries. EVERYONE gave a 2 thumbs up. The prime rib is tender and succulent the buns are very good too. The fries ..... while they were cooked perfectly.... they were pretty much forgettable. After having the Garlic Fries @ Safeco field watching the Mariners play, nothing - I mean NOTHING compares. Ambience? Well there isn't any. You order at the counter, take your number, grab your own condiments, water, napkins, hot sauce, etc and pick a rock hard seat and wait. Be sure and order your sandwich WITH as in with sauteed onions. mmmmm I'll be back
I had gone by the American Cheesesteak Company a few times on the bus I had told myself I have to go by there and check it out. I went last week thursday and let me tell you it was a bite of heaven.
