Decent Greek Food Close to Home

Last night was my third take out experience at Alexis' and I can say it is good Greek food that is hot and ready when they promise. For some inexcusable reason, good Moussaka is hard to find in this town, which in my books should be the standard test for any Greek restaurant. As someone who makes this dish at home, although somewhat labour intensive, it's easy to make it tasty. Alexis does a respectable job of not only Moussaka but also roast lamb and souvlaki dinners. The Greek salads are always fresh and perfectly dressed (not too oily), the meats are always very tender and not too salty (another feature of other Greek restaurants too much of the time). The waitress is charming and always a delight to deal with. For those who find decor important, this restaurant has been done up very tastefully in a cosy style that is comforting to be a part of for a quiet neighbourhood dinner. As for cleanliness, this location has been spotless each time I've been. Among Greek restaurants I would give Alexis 4 stars.

Greek Restaurant - The Worst
By WNTI of burnaby and vancouver (1 Review)

Caution (Surprise Restaurant Charge)!!!
Unless you're willing to pay an additional charge of $2.00, do not request leftovers ('doggie bag").

Owner's justification: standard practice @ all restaurants (1st for me & I dine out 2-3/wk) and huge portions (definitely not)

Food: D/F Calamari was good but the portion size is about a half compared to other restaurants.
2 pork chops were supposed to be flavorful but was hard/chewy/tough b/c meat was so thinly cut & over-cooked (burnt/blackened); accompanyments: tasteless rice; good greek salad; burnt potatoes

Service - Lucky for the 1 server that the restaurant was half empty on a Friday night. She was friendly/efficient but her recommendation was the pork chops. If that was the best entree, the worst ...

When the effort is lost

My gf and I picked up our friend back from the airport and we quickly descended towards town center for dinner. We ended up here after another Greek restaurant nearby was too long a wait. Having been to the old location on Broadway before and was less than impressed we'd hope they would rectify themselves the second time around.

We ordered all the must have entrees and started off with a couple of appetizers. The homous was good but our tarama was mostly filler with the bulk of it being mashed potato, then lemon zing then roe - a tangy/sour mashed potatoes with the roe hue. Portions were good but 1 pita each was a bit cheap on their end. My friend and gf's roast lamb was fall off the bone dry. It appears these were made well in advance and consequently time ruined the meat. It was heavily seasoned with a rosemary rub crust but it ended up masking the natural lamb flavour. My lamb chops were overdone though still moderately juicy, but charred to the point where the fatty pieces were acrid. Sides were passable, the roasted potatoes looking and tasting like a regular wedge frie while the rice pilaf was on the cooling end. Prices are par as are portions but the rest is lost.

The decor was boring, a large downgrade from the original location which was nothing spectacular to begin with and only 1 other table occupied while we were there. Perhaps this may have affected the service as we felt rushed from beginning to end. Our waitress asked for drinks the moment we were seated and no more than a minute later asked for orders. There were constant checkups in between (2 of which were unnecessary) and which became interruptive, especially when our dinner plates were being cleared while we were still eating. Saving grace was that there was some mild friendly undertones, especially from the owner/chef.

I see their coupon ads in the local papers often but I suppose those 2 for 1 offers aren't helping considering what we saw.

Second chance was a bust; there won't be a third.

Greek Dinner Dream.

Only a quick post.
A great disappointment with the food. Ordered for takeout.... should have just left.
The Lamb dinner was way over cooked/ braised to death dryness + poor cut to start with, dry old potatoes plus reheating food in a microwave is not only unprofessional but makes the food dangerous to eat (changes foods structure).

Seek alternative venues to dine at!

First off, I cannot believe the poor service we received. We went there for dinner and the service was terrible, so I told the waitress we weren't impressed with the service we had received so far, so instead of apologizing she told me to F*ck off and get out of the restaurant. So we took our money and left, all the way out she was screaming at us and swearing, in front of all the other customers! I was so shocked. This will be the ONLY time I go here. Please, take your business elsewhere, somewhere it's appreciated.

A pity that Cambie Village doesn't have a better Greek restaurant

Having moved into the neighbourhood a few months ago, my husband and I have been trying out the local restaurants and have been quite pleased.....until Alexis. We went with a couple of friends, and suffice it to say, we won't be going back. While the food wasn't awful, and value for money is extremely poor. There are hundreds of other options in Vancouver where you will spend similar sums of money and have much better food, service and ambiance. I am a little surprised that the restaurant is still going, to be honest. Service wasn't too bad - we've had worse. Overall, it's a pity that we will not be going back to Alexis - we love Greek food, but will have to venture further from the neighbourhood the next time the Greek craving strikes.

I don't understand all those negative reviews about this place. We've been coming here for nearly a year now... pretty much since it opened. Sometimes the service is rough, and sometimes it's inconsistent. But I highly doubt it's easy to keep staff on Cambie with the lack of consistent hours. There just aren't enough customers back yet for any waitress to earn her share of tips. So I accept that. But we aren't going there for the waitress. We're there for the food, and time after time it is superb! Even now as I am writing this review I find myself licking my lips.
Several times I've seen the owner/chef disagree with a customer, but that's half the fun.. knowing you're in it for real conversation and not some smiling bobble head who will agree with you just because you're the customer. The first time he approached our table, he was loud and I thought he was angry, but in due time I realized that's his voice, even when he's happy.
And let's not forget the portions: HUUUUUUGE!!! My boyfriend eats a lot, but if we go to Alexi's, he doesn't fills up on one entree, and we even have some leftovers sometimes.
My favourite is the veggie casserole, but that's often a feature and not regularly available. I also love the roast lamb (my boyfriend's favourite), and the chicken souvlaki. And for lunch on Saturday with the girls, the Greek salad with a humous dip to share. We often ask for extra pita bread.
When I go to Alexi's, I feel like I'm visiting a friend's house for a casual hearty home-cooked meal. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Tonight was our fifth visit to Alexis. We brought our friend who has just returned from a holiday in Greece and she enjoyed her meal of roast lamb. Delicious and a perfect amount, she told us. My friend and I always have the same thing...we look forward to the comfort food of souvlaki, keftedes, roast potatoes, and are never disappointed. The staff has always been friendly and welcoming. Alexis will be a regular, cozy date for us this winter.

Decided to try out one of the restaurants in the Entertainment book so we chose Alexia. Service was ok as the restaurant wasn't that busy and we had ordered the kalimari, a lamb souvlaki and a lamb dinner. The lamb souvlaki was dry and had 5 tiny pieces of lamb and the potatoes were dry (the skin was so tough!). Not very flavourful overall. The Kalimari was half cooked and it felt like eating slimy raw squid. When it came time to pay, we gave them the coupon (buy one entree, get the second one free - up to $16 value) and the waitress said that we can't use it because they changed their location! Even though it is the same restaurant, same owner, same staff, same EVERYTHING just different location, they tried to get out of their commitments to the entertainment book. When we asked the owner, he told us it was an entirely different restaurant (which is a lie, because we had called earlier confirming that it was the same restaurant, just a different location).

Decor was less than mediocre. Walls were painted blue and they had maybe 2 pictures up. Looked nothing like a greek restaurant except maybe for the music they played.

I will NEVER EVER go back again and suggest that if you want a good greek food experience, Alexia is not the place to go.

Went downhill

Re-visited Alexis this past summer with a few other people on a warm, summer evening. Place was fairly busy. Service was barely ok but in a grudging way. I get the sense they'd rather not be busy than be busy. Food was, how should I say this, worse than my previous visits. Quality went downhill, prices went up, and what seemed like a promising venue and location is now just another mediocrity in the middle of Vancouver.

Guys, at the rate you're going, you won't make another 6-9 months through this winter. Look around Cambie Village ...... Stella's, Pied-a-Terre, several new Asian restaurants moving in. Why should people pay $15-30 to eat at your establishment when there's so many better choices ? Rumor has it Vij's has secured the spot at 14th where Arroyd-D Thai Restaurant recently vacated.

My first time here, and probably my last. The server brought our food - and since it was an awkward corner table, she was reaching right across all of us to hand me my plate. It looked like she would spill it on one of us, so I reached to help her with my plate and she barked at me "don't touch the plate!!". Ok, I get it, so I put my hands back in my lap. She continues to growl - "servers don't like people who grab!!". ugh - excuse me? I'm actually not 5 years old, and so I am not impressed at all. In fact I was completely shocked. I think someone has her panties on way too tight! I realize that "servers" are an unregulated occupation, however there should be some basic manners for all of them. On top of that, although the food was good, there is nothing special about the food, you can get just as good anywhere else.

What a waste of a good location. This could be a great summer restaurant, with the windows opening on Cambie, but the food is disgusting. Ordered the eggplant dip to start...a greasy oily slick of harsh garlic. Prawns were well overcooked with no nuance of flavor, again just oily garlic yuck. Calamari was chewy, greasy, and served with overgarlic'd tsatziki. Also received the wrong drink...a lemon drop or similar instead of a martini. The server was friendly and fast, but unfortunately for her she's working at the wrong place. Even at what appear to be reasonable prices, Alexis is a total ripoff. I can't imagine anyone eating here twice.

My husband and I decided to get a pizza and lasagna to go - and support the new restaurnat in our neighborhood. It was during the snow storm that our Mayor did nothing about, so driving was difficult. We were out, so we thought we would grab something. My husband went in and ordered it and they said "20 mins". He paid, and we decided to drive around and bit and head back when it was ready. When we returned they said that it wasn't ready and that it would take another 30 mins! Having already paid and b/c we were hungry we decided to wait. They said that they were really busy... then we realized the guys that we helped push out of the snow were eating their entrees - and we had helped them after ordering! THEY DIDN'T BOTHER STARTING OUR ORDER B/C WE WEREN'T SITTING IN THE RESTAURANT! I told them that we were here before everyone else and their response was, "Well, our cook, he is really old, just look at him, he can't do it." I am not sure what "it" meant, but I guess it was either put orders in order, or cook - either way it was a complete joke, and possibly the most messed up response I have ever heard out of an incometant, mouth-breathing waitress.
When we finally got our food - one hour later, they didn't throw anything in for free or even apologize, and it was just as disgusting as the service and tasted just as old as the cook. Too many onions, mushy crust, and the lasagna and that weird sweet taste that all cheap-half-assed restauarants seem to create in their lasagna. Don't waste your hard earned money on this place - even if their food was edible. Go somewhere where they are appreciative of your business - these jokers aren't. I am looking forward to the day they close and a good restuarnat can go in. 'THE WORST ON CAMBIE'

Went here for dinner last night - made a reservation but were the only ones there for the better part of our dinner.

Food was mediocre at best. Had the calamari, goat cheese and hommous appetizers. Were edible but nothing to write home about. Ditto the lasagna. Had a weird meat sauce and not much tomatoes. Maybe it's a Greek thing, I don't know. Tiger prawns were, again, ok but nothing special. I'm sure there's better Greek out there!

This was our first visit to Alexis' Greek Cuisine.
There are five in our family. Three ordered the souvlaki, all of which were tough and dry. Two selected the rack of lamb and rice wrapped in grape leaves, and these were very good. The service was somewhat slow (there were only four other people in the restaurant!) and the table cloth was dirty. Ambience needs help; looks cheap. Prices are reasonable, that is if you avoid the souvlaki.

I went here for dinner a couple times. Good, comforting, home-style Greek food. The restaurant is lit by quiet candles and ambient lights and greek music plays in the background. I particularly enjoyed the quiet and warm atmosphere and the personal and attentive service.

I thought I would try this place out since I had a coupon in my entertainment book and I live fairly close to the restaurant. The restaurant has a really nice atmosphere with the music and the dim lighting, and the food we had was actually pretty good!! Although it does not make up for the slow service throughout the night. We had to constantly ask for things that would have seem common sense to bring to us such as side plates and forks when we received our calamari. When we did ask for things that they should have brought they took about 10-15 minutes each time, and we actually had to remind the waitress a second time for one thing.

I would only recommend this restaurant to anyone who doesnt mind wasting time waiting around at the sacrifice of some good food :)
