Akbar's Own serves up authentic original and traditional Indian cuisine. We are located on Broadway, near Burrard Street, only minutes away from the downtown core.
me and my friends went to Akbar restaurant and it was our frist time at Akbar's we ordered few dishes and they all were incredible. we tryed shrimp pakora, tunduri chiken, fish(red snaper), egg plant, pliow rice and nan. The service was also really good. The value was resonble for the food.so overall it was really good
It was not very busy when we went here, which may account for the high level of service; nonetheless, the people were friendly and polite, and made no mistakes.
Although the food was good, the portions were ridiculously small--and I don't mean "eating less is better for you" small, I mean "I'm a five-year-old and I just had cake" small. Not only that but the naan was too thin and too crunchy, and plain rice was not only the same insulting size, but three bucks a pop. Other rice dishes were progressively more, but we didn't bother. They didn't even have an excuse like "organic ingredients" or "authentic experience". Overall we felt rather insulted.
The serving size? Okay, open your hand out flat and close your fingers, now imagine your hand is about the size of the average man's. That was about the size of the serving plates. The menu prices looked normal ($8 - $15 depending on the item), but everything was tiny.
We entered hungry and left unsatisfied
Though the table for 4 people was booked, we arrived on time and there were empty tables, they had not set a table so we were made to wait with no apology. Menus were brought immediately but after half an hour, we had to approach the staff to ask them to take our order. They forgot to bring half the starters and didn't apologize when we asked for the rest of them. They brought a wrong main meal and even though we twice told them as they put the plates down and they acknowledged our words, they didn't return with the correct dish. Eventually I stood up and asked and was told they had given us the wrong dish. I then had to ask again before they agreed to prepare the right dish. No apologies for this shocking lack of service and we ended up giving a lower than usual tip - that they had the nerve to question! Despite enjoying the food, we will never go back.
If you're into heavy, creamy, and rather monotonous Indian food then this place is not for you. I've been going to Akbar's own for a few years now and I find it to be the best Indian food in Vancouver - great quality, good service, but more importantly food your body can digest and enjoy. Do visit this restaurant if you are serious about good cooking. The ambiance is nothing to write home about, but it's not too bad either.
Went for lunch with another person, ordered a fish and a chicken dish with 2 naans. Both dishes were bland and VERY SMALL. Naans were okay. We left the restaurant to go back to work paying $30 and were still hungry (2 women). Not worth it, dine elsewhere. Plus was that it was a nicely decorated restaurant.
I have been a fan of Ackbar's for years! I have never had better Indian Food anywhere. Vij's smij's! Althought their food is good they don't hold a candle to Ackbar's. Don't be alarmed by the small servings. The food is so incredibly rich and delicious that we always overindulge. I highly reccomend them!
