My companion and I finally tried Akbar’s Own for dinner the 1st time. For starters, we had the mixed appetizer platter ($10): Aloo tikki, vegetable and chicken pakoras. It was served with tamarind and mint chutney and complimented nicely with potatoes and spices especially the chicken pakoras. Pakoras are similar to fritters or croquettes but these were not greasy.
Make sure to try Nann bread with your meal to enjoy the (curry) sauces. We had the Aloo Naan ($3.00) stuffed with potatoes and spices as well as Palak Paneer Naan ($3.00) stuffed with spinach and cottage cheese. They were fine but my companion felt he had better; they could have been more generous with the paneer. If you never had nann, it’s like a pita bread. I enjoyed the leftover again at home with my own stuffing.
For our entree, we tried the lamb rogan josh ($13) and fish goa curry ($15). My companion enjoyed most of the lamb while I was quite taken by the fish curry. It had a wonderful tangy taste and coconut curry flavor which simply made me want to come back. Some may consider the serving relatively "small" compared to North American dishes but it's the flavour that will satisfy your tummy. The service was attentive and the restaurant atmosphere is relaxed. The menu has a good selection for vegetarian and meat lovers and prices are reasonable compared to Chutney Villa and East is East.
when my friends came in Vancouver,we decided to go for dinner from an INDIAN cuisine. One of my friends told me that there is very good restaurant in Vancouver & its name is Akbar's Own (1905 West Broadway @ Cypress). We all went there and was surprised by realizing the original taste of India here in Canada...we ordered one of our favorite dishes like BUTTER CHICKEN , LAMB VINDALOO, PRAWN GOA ,PALAK PANEER along with the AKBAR'S MIXED GRILL which consists of delicious Tandoori Tikkas...WE had the Naan breads as well with Pea Pulao and Lamb biryani an that was amazing... we all enjoyed the real indian delicious food from there and we are very thankful to Chefs and the person who served for us.Once again thank you AKBAR'S OWN for giving us a mind blowing treat..In my opinion ,I wil tell you...If u r searching for a real Indian food in Vancouver you should definitely consider Akbar's Own to have along with your family and friends.....And one more thing... try the vegetable pratha, an incredibly tasty whole wheat bread, stuffed with potato, onion, carrot, and green pea, its too good over all
Not much to rave about and I know Indian food! The service is odd, at lunch due to how dead they get, its almost too attentive, at dinner, when they are busy, food becomes slow and forget about take out, they often reject any take out once there's 2-3 tables filled, that is ludicrous to hear in this city. They get swamped once more than a table fills in. The food is flavourful but portions too tiny. There's a far better place called Raga just east of this place and I was told by my friends who are South Asian that its the place THEY would go.
A friend of mine recommended this place to me as it was his 'favorite indian restaurant in town!'..What a disappointment! Walking in the door, the ambiance was lovely, but a bit dark. It was warm and inviting and the staff were friendly. We ordered some traditional indian dishes but were very disappointed with the portion sizes of each dish. In the middle of our meal, we had to order seconds; therefore, making it very pricey. And...the taste of each dish was just 'o-kay'...definitely not memorable or out of the ordinary. I don't see myself going back there again or recommending this restaurant to anyone.
My wife and I eat out a lot (Asian cuisine is our favorite) and we have been to almost every (clean and respectable) Indian rest in Vancouver including Mourya, Raga, Vij's, Original Tandoori grill, Ashiana, ....... and we can truly say this is THE BEST of them all. The chef/owner used to own our favorite Indian restaurant in Calgary back in the 80's called MOTI MAHAL until he decided to re-locate to Vancouver and change the name to Akbars's Own. The food has more flavor and texture than is usually found in Indian food. The place is also VERY clean (check out the spotless washrooms) which is a rarity with Asian restaurants. Check it out.... you won't be disappointed.
This is by far one of the best Indian restaurants I have been to in Vancouver. This place is very cozy but the food is just amazing. I highly recommend the lamb dishes; especially the lamb vindaloo. The tandoori chicken is just as delectable and the naan is always perfect when it is delivered to our table. Make sure to try out their desserts as well. The rice pudding is just perfect and the gulab jamun is divine.
My husband and I were treated to dinner at Akbar's Own a few weeks ago.
There were six of us, and we shared a delectable combination of about eight dishes. We are very familiar with Indian cuisine, and this was positively the best Indian meal we have eaten in a restaurant. My mouth waters just thinking about it!
I have now been three times in 2 weeks. My wife and I are so glad our friends introduced us to this gem. We're VERY fussy about food and restaurants and Akbar's is excellent. The fish Marsala, tandoori chicken, nand and the dal was to die for. Real home cooking. The fact that just writing this makes me want to go back should tell you how we feel about their food. The best Indian food I've had so far.
It was not very busy when we went here, which may account for the high level of service; nonetheless, the people were friendly and polite, and made no mistakes.
Although the food was good, the portions were ridiculously small--and I don't mean "eating less is better for you" small, I mean "I'm a five-year-old and I just had cake" small. Not only that but the naan was too thin and too crunchy, and plain rice was not only the same insulting size, but three bucks a pop. Other rice dishes were progressively more, but we didn't bother. They didn't even have an excuse like "organic ingredients" or "authentic experience". Overall we felt rather insulted.
The serving size? Okay, open your hand out flat and close your fingers, now imagine your hand is about the size of the average man's. That was about the size of the serving plates. The menu prices looked normal ($8 - $15 depending on the item), but everything was tiny.
We entered hungry and left unsatisfied
I went there with a friend couple days ago. I always wanted to try it, but whenever I go it's either full or they will close in a bit. However, the food was amazing. I'm familiar with Indian food, but this one was fantastic. I order Kashimri lamb, kashmiri pialu, lamb tikka, some kind of desert I forgot what it was and orange juice. They have fresh orange juice. The lamb tikak was ok, nothing special, but the kashimiri lamb and rice were really good. My friend order lamb biriyani and it was great. The service was bad though. One of the waitresses was friendly but the other one doesn't reply to thank you! I'm sure I said thank you more than 12 times and I didn't get any reply. When we got there, she came and dropped the menus without saying anything. I'm definitely going there again, because the food worth it. If the service is bad again, I will talk to the manager. I recommend the restaurant.
We decided to try Akbar's based on reviews here and we weren't disappointed. We have gone 3 times now in the last few months and can't get enough.
The service is very friendly and they are always willing to help out with menu decisions. The actual restaurant is quite boring inside, but it feels clean and comfortable.
For us, this can be closely compared with Maurya (which is just down the street). The food is cheaper and much better in our opinion. While we do have better places we like to visti (Tandoori King on Fraser), this is the best this area has to offer and is well worth the visit.
Akbars has always been our favourite for East Indian food. The dishes are superb and we have never been disappointed. The service could be a tad more attentive, but this can be overlooked as the food is really that good.
I'm a huge fan of Indian Cuisine...so much that I've flown to New Jersey just to try some traditional. Upon arrival at Vancouver, I was stoked to find Akbar's Own around the corner from my house. I thought "a place with a good rating and very close to my house...nothing can top that." My friend and I decided to give it a try.
From what I could see under the candle light, the place was somewhat nicely decorated. It was just sooo damn dark in there...I couldn't even make out the words on the menu. That was pretty bad. So I wanted a channa masala with bhatura, uthappam and masala dosa but they had nothing of the sort. On the random, we asked what the waitress thought were the best veggie dishes around. We ended up ordering Nauratan, eggplant bharta, and alu gobi with a whole bunch of naan on the side.
The food arrived. Each dish was pretty small, about the size of an eyeglass case. We dipped in. The Nauratan was a mushy mess...you can't even make out what the hell was in it (the poor lighting didn't help). It was so salty that I knew my health would be compromised if I had another bite. We moved on to the eggplant bharta. It was alright, I don't remember anything significant from it. The alu gobi was the only item I recognized both by sight and by taste. But it wasn't anything special.
On the last note, I was shocked to find the naan to be a safeway-type-flatbread. Granted, I was spoiled with tandoori-made naans back in the states...but I thought a place with this type of reputation would at least cook something representative of its native cuisine. The bhatura was yummy enough...probably the best item we ordered...which doesn't say much, it was like a small inflated fried pita bread.
(sigh)
Overall, it was quite a disappointment. From now on, I will take my time to bus all the way to Punjabi Market on Main St. to get the real treat.
We were looking for a good Indian restaurant. Based on the consistently good reviews on dinehere.ca, we had high expectations for Akbar's Own. We were not disappointed! Friends who joined us (somewhat uncertainly, as they aren't big fans of Indian food), were equally impressed. We will certainly return!
The food is extremely flavourful — so much so that we ordered extra naan at the end of the meal so we could mop up every bit of sauce in each of the dishes. The portion sizes are reasonable — not too big, not too small. The way the meal works is that everyone shares the food, serving themselves from the various dishes. We ordered five dishes for four people, plus an order of rice and a couple of naan breads, and it was the right amount — not so much that we were bursting at the seams, but enough that we were all satisfied.
We went on a Tuesday night in early January, and all but one table was occupied, so reservations are a good idea.
It's a nice, cozy little restaurant - I really enjoyed that part. However, after reading the reviews I find this place highly overrated. The butter chicken was 'just ok' - I've definitely had better. I'd go to a different Indian restaurant next time.
I love this restaurant. The food is excellent and even though the restaurant is small, it is well worth the wait for a table. Everything on the menu is incredible and even though the food sometimes is SO spicy your nose is running and you're about to cry, it is so good it makes you want to eat more and finish it. I highly recommend any prawn dish. There is also an eggplant dish that may not sound appealing for those who don't like eggplant, it surprisingly doesn't taste much like eggplant and is really good. The atmosphere is enlightening with nice furniture.
me and my friends went to Akbar restaurant and it was our frist time at Akbar's we ordered few dishes and they all were incredible. we tryed shrimp pakora, tunduri chiken, fish(red snaper), egg plant, pliow rice and nan. The service was also really good. The value was resonble for the food.so overall it was really good
I've been to Akbar's Own three times in four weeks, 2 dinners, 1 lunch (one of the best deals in town). After my first meal there I realized that it has been long time since my taste buds have been so stimulated. The mix of spice and sweet will leave you wondering why you've been eating such bland food for so long.
I do love Akbar's Own, the curries are great!! The good thing about the menu selection is that there is a variety of dishes with different spiciness to choose from, so anyone who cannot take spicy will be satisfy there. The sesame naan is superb, and Shrimp Pakora is a must try item. And fish cury...yummy. However, I cannot believe they charged me for a little bit of extra mint chutney!!
Though the table for 4 people was booked, we arrived on time and there were empty tables, they had not set a table so we were made to wait with no apology. Menus were brought immediately but after half an hour, we had to approach the staff to ask them to take our order. They forgot to bring half the starters and didn't apologize when we asked for the rest of them. They brought a wrong main meal and even though we twice told them as they put the plates down and they acknowledged our words, they didn't return with the correct dish. Eventually I stood up and asked and was told they had given us the wrong dish. I then had to ask again before they agreed to prepare the right dish. No apologies for this shocking lack of service and we ended up giving a lower than usual tip - that they had the nerve to question! Despite enjoying the food, we will never go back.
