Delicious Roast Lamb, great value

The Roast Lamb, for only 12 dollars, is incredibly tasty and delicious. The affordable prices and familiar ambience (although the music is terrible) made us come back many times for lunch or summertime dinner.

Reading the other reviews - many outdated, from 4 or 5 years ago - I disagree with the negative ones, finding the overall service great, the owner seems to be a very dedicated man, friendly and aware, trying hard to achieve his customer's satisfaction.

Also, I'm surprised - first time ever in Canada I could have a beer for 2.50 in a restaurant.

Bottomline: the roast lamb itself is a reason to go and come back many times. If I lived in Vancouver I'd become a regular.

Not overwhelming. It's a nice little place. The prices are very good, I think most things are under $10.
The mussels were the most plump and juicy mussels that we've ever had (and that includes Lumiere). However, the flavour wasn't quite up there. The bread (thick pita) was a good thumbs up. That was pretty much the story with the other things as well, the dolmathes dinner and the roast lamb. It's a good deal, very tasty, but there's a bit lacking in taste to give it a higher mark.
On the plus side, even though we were really full, we did not go away feeling greasy and bloated, which is a rare feeling for us walking away from a Greek restaurant. Service was also quite nice and pleasant (okay, it wasn't fine dining but more than met what we expect of this type of place).
I may even go here rather than line up at Stepho's...

I adore the Adonis Restaurant!

I adore the Adonis Restaurant, and often dine in this fine establishment for lunch or dinner whenever I’m in Vancouver and fancy good Greek food. The location at the downtown end of the Granville Street bridge is convenient and parking is no problem. Step inside and you are welcomed into the warm, romantic ambience of a colourful Mediterranean taverna, the lilt of bouzukis playing softly in the background. With seating for about 40, the setting is intimate and informal, and the service is friendly and attentive. I like to start with a delectable plate of calamari or freshly baked pita bread with hummous, or the puffy spanikopita. For the main course, the tender roast lamb with lemony potatoes and Greek salad is hard to beat, or maybe tender chicken or beef kabobs over rice, but there are so many other tantalizing choices on the menu. A glass or two of a burgundy or merlot seems to keep good company with the delicious food. I’m usually too full for dessert, but the Baklava is usually too good to resist. A shot of ouzo and a coffee usually completes the meal. Sometimes Abbas, the restaurant’s charming owner and chef, will stop by my table to chat and make sure everything is all right, which it always is. The prices are surpisingly reasonable given the quality of the food. Efharisto!

Dining at Adonis

I have eaten at Adonis serveral times over the past few years. In my experience the food has been great. One of my favorites is the lamb chops which were tender and sumptuous. Another favorite is the Spanikopita, a light and delicious appetizer. Also, the prices are extremely reasonable. I have not found better value for money for this type of cuisine and atmosphere.

The lemon and chicken soup (don't remember the Greek name) was delicious and perfect for my cold. I ate the soup before the Bob Dylan concert, and didn't cough or sneeze once. Great food for the price. My husband was in Vancouver for a convention, and ate here two nights in a row, enjoyed it.

mehhh, it'll do in a pick. It wasn't unusual, or outstanding. Nothing was done to make sure we remembered the place and wanted to come back soon. The food was standars, wwarm, tasty . . . but standard. Our server was average as well. No "Hi, how are you doing, can I get you something to drink". Simply a "Can I take your order?"

So I'll just file this place with the rest under "Greek Restaurants"; instead of under "Wow, let's eat there again"

Great Mussels -terrific value

We have been going to this restaurant since it opened for both the mussels and the value of a shared meal . the mussels are done in a spicy wine sauce and if you like a little spice you can not resist picking up the spoon enjoying the broth with pita .The mussels , a large lamb souvlaki meal with a 1/2 liter of wine for less than $40.00 is a true bargain ,. Combine this with a friendly attentive service and a casual atmosphere and it always enjoyable .

Recently me and the husband dined at Adonis ... I have to say, being a first timer, that I was very impressed with the food, and the service was most friendly and very welcoming! I had the keftethes to start and thoroughly enjoyed them, while hubby had the baked mussels ... I didn't try them but he tells me they were delicious, and although I've seen better looking mussels, I'll defer to his review. For dinner, he had the lamb souvlakia and exclaimed it's the best he's had in a very long time. I sampled it and would have to agree! It really was good! I had the baked lamb ... which, and I'm not trying to be cliche, was succulent and really just "fell off the bone". No knife required ... The most expensive entree on the menu, if memory serves, was $16.99 (??) ... Uhm, hello!! How can you go wrong?? All in all, our dining experience was so pleasurable, that we are going back tonight! ... Opa!

Went here with a few friends and at first I didn't expect much because I've never heard of this place. Prices were very reasonable and the food was tasty. I ordered the roast lamb and it was superb. Also tried the calamari and found it to be done just right. My friend said this place usually isn't busy and I wonder why. Could be the location - on the edge of downtown just before the Granville bridge - and right across from the Cecil. Our waitress was very attentive and seemed to time everything just right. I'll have to go back another day and try other items on the menu. All I can say now is that the roast lamb was delicious!

I have been to Adonis on many occasions. I have tried many of the menu items. The food has always been exceptional and the prices are extremely reasonable. The mussels appetizer and the roast lamb with a red merlot are one of my favorites. The decor is a beautiful Greek panorama. I highly recommend this as a dining experience.

I tried this restaurant a few times and will never go there again. On my first takeout order they forgot the tzatziki, which I didn't realize until I got home. I went all the way back, was charged for it...okay, fine. The next time I called and ordered the spanokapita dinner, was given the appetizer instead. When I called the restaurant to complain the server argued with me "No, you ordered the spanokipita appetizer". When I finally asked to speak to the manager, he said "He's not here," which soon turned into "I'm his son, so I deal with things when he's not here." No offer to make things right, no apology...I won't be returning, especially since the food has been just so-so.

This place and many like it are trying to copy Stepho's North American style of Greek food, It's terrible. Wake up this is not the 80's guys! Service not good, they had no knowledge of the food they are serving. Food was obviously microwaved. No way I'm going back. Who knows it might have been sold already.

Horrid Service and Half-Decent, Cold Food
By prairie_lilly of Burnaby (1 Review)
Submitted Saturday, August 11, 2007 - 11:50am [Dine in]

Went to Adonis last night with some family visiting the area, and oh what a crappy experience. When we got there, we were seated quite quickly, as we'd phoned ahead to reserve a table for the seven of us. But once we got there, we were ignored by the wait staff, and honestly, our server was incredibly nonchalant and rude.

My one cousin is lactose intolerant and has celiac disease (essentially can't eat any grain/wheat products containing gluten) so we expected the menu choices to be limited, but we chose Greek because she can eat potatoes and rice and meat. However, our waitress rather rudely told us that "everything has wheat". She told us anything containing any spices had wheat in it (even claimed BBQ sauce was a no-go) and so she ended up eating plain, grilled chicken with cucumber pieces. When my uncle asked if there was any place nearby he could get some steamed rice, the waiter told him that she never comes out here except for work, so how should she know, and walked away.

When our appetizers came, we weren’t given any plates to eat off of, and when we tried to get our waitress's attention, she ignored us - we ended up having to get another waitress to help us after about ten minutes of waiting. When our entrees came, my Uncle's baked dish was cold, and he had to send it back, my brother's Moussaka was barely warm, my prawns were literally swimming in oil, and my side dishes (rice and lemon potato) were cold. Definitely not good - lower quality than the Greek food we've made ourselves at home.

The restaurant itself was fairly quaint, but the layout was way too busy and crowded - tables shoved very close together and barely any walkway space. Not a bad restaurant, but the food quality and the level of service overrode any positives in ambiance or character of the restaurant itself.

I would definitely NOT go back to this restaurant, and warn anyone else that the food and service were absolutely atrocious.

Best Roast Lamb around

I like Greek food and have eaten at many Greek restaurants. I have eaten at Adonis restaurant many times. At Adonis, I like many of the dishes, but the roast lamb is my favourite dish. It is excellently prepared, and it came with rice, delicious roast vegetables, roast potatoes, Greek salad and pita with tzatziki. A lot of delicious food for an excellent price. I found the service to be warm and friendly, and they responded to my requests for additional tzatziki promptly. There is also a good wine and liquor selection. I think that the price is unbeatable considering the good food.
