Acropol Taverna serves up fine Greek food in an authentic atmosphere.
I have dined at the Acropol at least half a dozen times and it remains one of my favourite restaurants in town. I have taken my family and friends there and we have always left very happy.
The exohiko (slow roasted lamb shoulder) is incredibly flavourful and melts in your mouth. Other favourites of mine are the octopus and their pork chops. Unlike many restaurants their serving size in generous and I have never left hungry. Being a person with a healthy appetite I appreciate this, along with the very reasonable prices.
The traditional Greek music adds a nice touch to their warm and inviting atmosphere. The service is great and very friendly - just what you would expect from a family restaurant.
If you are looking for authentic Greek food this is the place!
It was a cozy place
Food: I ordered some sort of wrap. Which was really greasy, and the salad juices (or whatever) were all over the plate, leaving parts of my wrap soggy. Salad was good though.
Service: Took almost an hour for the food. I guess its difficult with a party of 13, but still, there was only one other table. She never asked for refills, and was often seen chatting with kitchen staff, not doing much.
Ambiance: Cozy place. Nicely lit, and nice interior, although really squished
I took a group of hungry friends from out of town last Saturday. The restaurant host graciously and gladly welcomed a group of five despite a lack of reservation on a Saturday night. We ordered the kalamaria (fried squid rings) and saganaki (fried cheese) as appetizers. The saganaki was good but the kalamaria were excellent--warm, crispy, and perfect flavour. The bread that was brought was also excellent--perfectly crispy and warm.
I ordered the spanakopita platter, as did one of my friends. One ordered the moussaka, one ordered a stuffed eggplant dish, and one ordered a lamb gyro.
My spanakopita phyllo dough was a tad overcooked, but the rice, potatoes, and the spanakopita fillings were great.
Each one of us cleaned our plate (and at the Acropol, that's a lot of cleaning, because the servings are large).
The only weak points were the weak house wine, and the fact that the restaurant's acoustics are such that once the place began to fill up, each table's conversation added to a dull roar.
Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and even as business picked up, our water never stayed empty and we never felt rushed out. The bill was high, but I felt it was worth it for a tasty and leisurely meal.
I am a sucker for great lamb and I come here for the best in the city--the Exohiko (huge lamb shoulder entree) is fall-off-the-bone-tender with deliciously crusty edges and is very flavourful. One server told me this is also his favourite dish on the menu. The potatoes served with it are lemony-smooth-goodness and it is making my mouth water now to think about it. I always also order the tarama here, it is tasty with their soft fresh pitas. The prawns here are also exceptional. My sister first introduced me to the place because she would always come here for her humous cravings.
The atmosphere is quiet and intimate, the tables decorated with simple but pretty fresh flowers.
The service is very personal and friendly. Once when I came here I was feeling torn, because I was craving another entree but I was having a hard time letting go of coming here without having the Exohiko. The server gave me both on the plate and didn't even charge me any extra. On another occasion I got home with my leftover Exohiko and noticed that they had given me a free dessert as a surprise in my doggie bag! I can't remember the name of the dessert but it was fluffy, creamy, with phyllo pastry on top and it was delicious.
The price is average for good Greek food and the flavour and serving portions are worth the price. This place is definitely worthy a visit.
I *always* eat here when I have a craving for Greek. This place is located in the Greek neighborhood and seems to be run by a Greek family (I often see the kids helping out when I get my take-out). So far I've tried the kalamari dinner, lamb souvlaki, and lamb zorbas. The zorbas and souvlaki are my fave!! i also love the generous serving of yummy rice and potato (nicely marinated), along with the greek salad and warm pitas that come with the souvlaki. YUMM!!
The place is small but cute, and they've done a good job with decoration. I can't really comment on the service as I haven't yet dined in there; I always order by phone and pick it up. They've always been friendly and prompt when picking up orders, though.
Anyways, I highly recommend this place!
The humus arrived quickly and the pita was hot. The menu said the humus was so good you'll want the recipe, which was true, I did want it. It was delicious, I thought the other appetizers would arrive shortly, but I was disappointed to find I had to wait another ten minutes after the humus to get the rest. We had to continually ask for more pop, they didn't bother to notice that our water, or pops had gone dry. The cheese arrived, and it looked promising after the waiter lit it on fire and put the fire out by squeezing lemons on to it. The chicken livers looked good too. The cheese was all right, nothing special, but all right. I had one of the chicken livers, my husband ate the rest, I guess they were OK.
I was completely disappointed with the appearance of mine. When something says it comes with a salad, any type, I expect a good size salad. The salad that it came with was in a small dish that was smaller then the one used to serve the humus. I love Greek salad, so I started with that. The first bite I thought "Whats wrong with this?" I had a few more bites before realizing it was the feta, it was as though it had gone bad. I went on to the lamb and rice part, it was all right, I was expecting something a little different, but it was OK. I had a taste of my husbands calamari, it tasted good to me, a little undercooked though.
We finished up and wanted out, asked for the check immediately. I was shocked to find that for the 5 pops we drank, which were mostly ice, we were charged $9.95.
Overall, the place looked great, the service sucked, the food wasn't very good, and the way they ripped me off for the sodas was outrageous. The best thing about this place is the humus. After stepping out the door, I immediately said to my husband "I'm never coming here again."
Try if you like, but I thought it sucked.
