Everything is wrapped in fillo.
We pick up their Banitza's (usually the one with leeks) and use them as appies.....'everyone' enjoys them and ask where to obtain them. We always caution that the doorway is small and hard to locate, but, certainly worth going to.
We've also enjoyed the other offerings, including the desserts.
Everytime I go to Denman I eat from this restaurant! I've always told myself I should try something new but once I'm there I'm craving their food so I don't end up being adventurous but who cares?
First time I ordered take out because the place was so small I thought it was take out only. But the visits after that I sat in, mostly because it was raining, but it's rather cozy inside as well.
I usually order the fillo, either duck and orange or the roast lamb and onions. Previous reviews seem to price this place lower than what it costs now, but that's just inflation probably. Though I was disappointed when I went today because they said they have to charge $4 extra for the duck now because duck has been expensive in the market lately (really?? Is that true?). So I got the lamb instead no problem it's still really good and filling for one person. I am absolutely in love with their yams that come on the side! I was even pig enough once to order an extra side of it for only a buck something. But I realized after it was plain gluttony and I couldn't finish haha. It usually comes with potatoes and yams mixed but you can get them with just yams instead (or just potato if you prefer, I'm guessing).
Their service is great as well. There's always a friendly girl helping you out at the register which is usually also the server. They answered a lot of my questions about the menu nicely during my first couple visits and gave suggestions to my liking (like the yam only option) when I wasn't sure what to do. Today's visit was no exception! I decided to order and pay/tip at the same time before I settled down to sit. The waitress knew I wanted the window seat from my conversation with my boyfriend but someone just came in the restaurant and took up those seats while I was paying. The waitress was kind enough to ask the new customer to sit somewhere else because I came first and wanted them. This might be something really simple or expected from a restaurant, but you'd be surprised how little people care elsewhere sometimes! Especially at small cafes such as this which seems take out oriented.
They also have this dessert freezer display case that makes me drool everytime I check out what's inside. But I never have enough room after the meal for them! I'm definitely trying dessert first next time!
Showed up at this place a couple of weeks ago with a friend. As soon as I went in, I thought maybe I was in the wrong place? The inside is properly lighted, and by night they put on the candles. They have a self serve water station and the walls have painted trees and fences, really loved it.
I had the spinach and mushroom fillo and my friend had the philly steak one. She liked hers, as did I, but I had a problem with the actual fillo part. It was EXTREMELY salty for some odd reason, and I had to drink like 2 cups of water. I dunno if it was just that day or maybe they're suppose to taste like that? The philly steak one also tasted incredibly salty, the flaky part. That's why I gave it only a 3. But the ingredients were definitely fresh. The salad was a nice touch, and the best part of my plate were the roasted potatoes and yams. They were PERFECT, like they were meant to be at the highest class restaurant. YUMM. I was too full to have any dessert, but they looked really good.
Each of our dishes were about 10 something, totally worth it. I wouldn't so much as come back for the fillo, seeing how salty it is, but those roasted veggies are oh so good. And might go back to try the desserts.
Being a work-at-home guy, I'm fortunate enough to be able to regularly sample Denman Street's variety of lunchtime offerings. Acacia has been a favourite of mine for a long time now.
Their lunchtime specials never disappoint. The main attraction consists of a flaky, burrito-sized fillo pastry containing a tasty filling - steak and mushrooms, halibut and shrimp, salmon, turkey slices, or others. It's a generous portion, and it's accompanied by the tastiest crispy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside mix of diced sweet potatoes and regular potatoes. Soup or salad is also included, and I usually go for the soup - always homemade and usually quite delicious (my favourite is the hearty tomato).
They also have a variety of desserts which I have yet to scratch the surface of, but have always been happy with anything I've tried - the vanilla cake I had today was superb, sweet yet light.
The lunch special with a drink is just around $10 - a super deal.
Acacia will continue to be one of my regular lunchtime spots!
I finally got the chance to eat here last night after multiple time driving past it. What a treat!
I walked in and was greated by Ziggy the owner. He told me that the fillo of the day was out, but he would substitute the turkey kashkaval instead. He mentioned something else, but I couldn't really understand him through the accent. I just agreed to whatever he suggested since it is my first fillo bar experience.
He told me to take a seat while someone prepared my meal (to go). While sitting, I got a chance to absorb the ambiance. It had such a great European charm to it. It's a casual place, but I would still recommend it as a nice sit down restaurant - as the nice tables are comfortably presented with floral centerpieces and candles. Also while waiting, I got a sneak peak at their wonderful looking desserts! Since it was late already (about 9:30pm), I had no room for dessert, but I made a note to return next time to try them. Their banitzas, chocolate sticks, and vanilla cakes look especially appetizing.
The soup that came with my meal was absolutely delicious! Fresh tomato soup with vegetables. The turkey fillo exceeded my expectations! A delicious combination of turkey, spinach, and kashkaval wrapped in light phyllo. It also came with roasted potato and yams and a teeny side salad perfectly dressed.
The only thing strange about my experience was that my meal came out to $12, but on their menu, the daily special (comes with same sides) was only $9? Regardless, it was well worth the money and I am likely to return very soon!
I live on Gabriola Island and don't eat out much. Also, my husband is an excellent cook (who doesn't like going to restaurants) and I have found I have become somewhat spoiled now when it comes to food. I no longer have any interest in fast food, greasy food, etc. Since I was going to be in Vancouver for two nights on my own, I wanted to make the most of my meals out.
I was looking for something different in food, and found this restaurant on Dine Here. Never having had Bulgarian food I decided to try it based on the reviews.
I ordered the special. I had the soup as an appetiser - a fabulous tomato - there was a choice of hot or cold (don't know if that meant two different soups or that you could have the tomato hot or cold, but I had hot). My banitza filling was brie, prosciutto, spinach and sun dried tomato. I'm not used to eating salt so about midway through I found the prosciutto to be a bit much, but I just took smaller bites and finished the works. The mixture of roast potatoes and yams was also good. There was a small bit of greens on the plate as well, with a nice dressing.
At one point there was opera playing, which I didn't much care for, but eventually different music came on.
Feeling quite full, it was a long trudge (mostly uphill, it seemed!) up Robson back to the Hotel Vancouver, but I stopped along the way for a blood orange gelato.
I would go back to this restaurant - I'd probably try the steak and mushrooms next.
The best cafe on Denman Street that you do not know about, serving banitzas and other Bulgarian treats in a small place that's easy to miss. I always take guests there and not one has been disappointed yet.

Acacia's banitzas are delicious and filling without being greasy, and there is also a decent choice of fillo parcels with other savoury fillings. Their selection of sweet treats is far more diverse and imaginitive than the standard coffee shop range. They only make one kind of muffin but it's the best around and has the following to prove it - it often sells out early. Arrive at around 8AM and get yours warm out of the oven, and rejoice in the fact that a small, authentic and unique cafe is setting the pace on Denman Street, despite the creeping cancer of corporate eateries.
This is one of our most favorite restaurants for brunch. The eggs benny are AMAZING!!!! It's a SUPER tiny place near Enlgish Bay, but the food is SO good. Service is average, value of food for what you get is pretty good too. Food is super flavorful and their eggs benny are served with an amazing garlic yogurt sauce instead of the heavy, tradional fatty hollandaise. The meal comes with roasted and yam potatoes and a small green salad. Both amazing as well. I have also had some of their phyllo pastry, and yet again, is amazing as well. It will continue to be on the top of our list for BEST places to go for brunch. Highly recommended.
We ended up at Acacia by accident one rainy night. Wanted to eat something different and had always seen this place when going to Delaney's for a coffee.
We were pleasantly surprised... They specialize in phylo pastry dishes. I tried the lamb and my girlfriend had the chicken pesto. Both were very tasty but I though the Chicken Pesto was very good and would get that next time. The meals were each about $9.99 including a nice mixed green salad and roasted potato/sweet potato side. House wines are priced at $4.00 per glass.
Overall the meal was lovely and they serve Lavazza coffee which was perfect after the meal. A large selection of desserts also looked great.
Noticed they have an amazing breakfast for $7.99 and we will definitely be back to try it.
Simple, tasty food with attentive service in a very European ambiance for hard to believe prices. Great value.

I'm staying in Vancouver for the week and have been eating out a lot. Last night I went to Acacia and it was absolutely delicious! I had phyllo wrapped wild mushrooms with spinach and was expecting a small portion but it was HUGE! It came with roast potatoes and yams and a mixed green salad. The only issue was the cost of a can of pop, which was over $2. The food price was reasonable at about $10 but the cost of pop was absurd. I do plan to return but will be drinking water instead!
My boyfriend and I discovered Acacia Fillo Bar about 8 months ago, we became utterly addicted to the fillo specifically the brie and cheese, it comes with a small salad and roasted potatoes and yams. At one point we seriously went 5-6 days a week. It was so exciting to find a unique reasonably priced restaurant.
For about 2-3 months we continued to go there, loving to food, service and price. However, early in the year the fillo was unbearably and horribly salty, making it practically unedible. This happened a couple of times in a row so we stopped coming deciding to try again in a few weeks;a few weeks later to our delight it was good again.
Then, the brie practically disappeared altogether and it was rather unpleasant, a huge fillo filled with cooked spinach and a few pecans. Sadly the size of the salad has ALWAYS been a different serving size sometimes (not kidding) we had take out and my salad was seriously 3 small pieces of prewashed lettuce and half a cherry tomatoe. Dissappointed and irritated we again had this happen a couple of times and took yet another break from the fillo bar.
I swore I would never go back because of the constant inconsistent food and for two months we never went back but when the fillo bar is good it is amazingly good and I was craving it so badly we gave it another try. It was spectacular, nice sized portion of salad, nicely roasted potatoes and a fillo FILLED with amazing gooey brie! So we started coming back a little more frequently now that the food was good again, but sadly tonight we were massively dissappointed......
The food took FOREVER to arrive, which we were sort of okay with because we know how great and delicious the fillo is... This had to be the worst fillo ever, the server came with strangely mangeled fillo and apologized for the appearance because they are trying a "new" fillo out but said it should taste the same. Okay...hopefully it will taste the same.....it didn't. It was terrible absolutely horrible, the "brie" was disgusting and did not resemble brie at all, more like the cheapest most flavourless mozzarella from a corner store down the street. It was chewy and stringy and salty. Awful. My boyfriend asked the server if a different cheese was being used he said no but that he would check in the back. When he came back out he said that the owner was in Bulgaria and they ran out of brie so they did use a different cheese, he then asked us if it was a good replacement. We told him no, it was awful and that I would definitely never order this again if fillo stayed this way. He apologized thanked us for our feedback and left the table. We paid (full price, no suggestions as to how to fix the situation) and are more than disappointed.
If they owner is out of town, should the staff not be told where to get supplies from? Is she impossible to reach? Shouldn't she provide them with the required ingredients to run the restaurant???? I'm baffled, the fillo wasn't very good I'm guessing it was pre-made from the freezer section at Safeway and the brie as previously mentioned was terrible. Horrendously bad.
The inconsistent food is not forgivable, insane amounts of salt, no brie in a brie and pecan fillo, outrageously small salads, (random portion sizes), and terrible replacement ingredients have laid to rest our love of acacia. I'm genuinely sad because I know the food can be amazing.
Happened into this charming place in a part of town I rarely frequent-what a lovely surprise it was.
In a neighbourhood literally heaving with variety this place offers something different enough to be distinctive and familiar enough to be instantly desirable.
The Leek and Feta Banitza is a winner-as I rated outstanding value very tasty with well balanced flavours.
Blink and you might miss it. It's a tiny place sandwiched between a couple of other restaurants. It doesn't help that the restaurant name is less than prominent. Look in and you'll think it's just another coffee joint.
Fortunately, it's not. The menu is small, there's basically 2 things (plus variations) on the menu. The filo stuff and the another thing which is kind of like a filo pie. It's hard to describe...
Started off with a cold cucumber soup, very nicely done. The filo (got the orange & duck) was ... a delightful surprise! Not heavy at all, very light and flaky. Duck inside was quite sizeable and juicy. Look, this is the right way to use filo, not like the ones at dim sum places or Chinese bakeries...
The other thing ... odd! You'll just have to try it yourself, it's kind of like a quiche but made with dough or filo rolls instead of eggs, or something like that. Quite yummy anyways.
The meal for the 2 of us came to just over $16, so not expensive at all.
Worth a first visit? Yeah, for sure. A second? Hmm... will have to think about that since the menu is quite limited, but maybe...
Wow. Upon glancing into this small, candle lit restaurant, i was led in by the welcoming atmosphere. On a typical rainy Vancouver evening, it was like a warming balm rubbed gently to the soul.
We were welcomed into an almost empty place, but jeez what it lacked in people it more than made up for in general atmosphere (cosy cosy cosy ; in a laid back Mediterranean vibe) and the FOOD....
SO GOOD!! Seriously. I got a cream of mushroom soup , you could tell it was home-made (i asked) it was rich creamy and very tasty. Then ; the roast vegtable fillo The fil.lo was actually very light (appearances are deceptive) this came with a tiny lovely little side salad and mouth wateringly tasty roasted potatoes and yams, all diced up.
Desert was a revelation ; mixed berries, with little chunks of chocolate warmed and wrapped in fillo pastry, served with cream, anyone? No? All for me then..
We came down for breakfast 2 days after our meal. In contrast to the
previous outing, the cafe was throbbing with people.. i can guess why, after tasting the most freshest portion of fruit parfait for my uber healthy breakfast.
The poached eggs benedict seemed to be ordered at a flying rate, so we ordered one to share. A spinach and wild mushroom eggs benny.WOW is all i can say. The eggs were perfect, soft and fluffy, the sauce on top (not hollandaise) was the best thing about the dish, the waitress couldnt divulge the secret ingredient but it is 100% home-made. kind of garlicky? and oh so good.
I'm certainly going back to taste this breakfast (and a few other things i had my eye on in the menu..) again, and i can definatly advise the next foodie to also.
A quick note ; the prices are ridiculously low! the eggs were 7 dollars, they were worth double, especially when u compare this standard of food to places lie Joe's grill, also on denman. It visibly pales in comparioson... So GO EAT!
