Spotted Bear Bistro offers upscale classic comfort food with a focus on the bounty of Vancouver Island.
This was our second visit to the Spotted Bear in two years. Like last time, this was also a very memorable culinary experience. We arrived in Tofino and pretty much headed right there for an early dinner after a long drive. We were not disappointed. We ordered a pre-dinner drink...the SB Caesar. It has horseradish in it and there's simply no going back to a 'regular' Caesar from here on out LOL. Fantastically fresh and perfectly spiced. And I'm not just saying that as a loyal Pole. We decided to share the beet salad. It was brought out on two plates and we were pleasantly surprised at the portions. The citrus vinaigrette was a great choice to accentuate, not smother, the taste of the beets, greens and goat cheese. The pumpkin seeds were awesome to round out the texture and overall taste. My entree was the duck and as someone who is not typically a duck person, I could have easily eaten this every night while we were in Tofino. Expertly prepared with just the right amount of crispiness on the outside and juicy tenderness on the inside. Simply excellent. My partner had the braised short ribs which he loved. We were thoroughly satisfied and impressed although we suspected that perhaps the Spotted Bear was setting the bar impossibly high for our other dining experiences to come LOL.
PS Our entrees for our first visit were spaghetti carbonara which, regrettably, has been taken off the menu...and the lamb shepherd's pie. Both entrees had the wow factor and if on the menu when you visit, are highly recommended.
