Shelter combines a sophisticated seasonal menu, prepared using local and organic ingredients whenever possible, with a relaxed attitude and panoramic view.
We went to Shelter for a late lunch and were not disappointed. I ordered the shrimp sandwich which is served on focaccia bread with avocado and bacon. It was really tasty and had a ton of shrimp on it. To accompany my sandwich, I ordered the chowder which was also really good. Flavour was excellent and loaded with seafood and not too much potato. Overall, I really enjoyed the food.
The pricing is quite reasonable for the quality of food. I liked the ambiance which I would describe as modern rustic with an open kitchen concept so you can see the flurry of activity in the back of the restaurant. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Shelter and would return.
Another night in Tofino and another restaurant to try. We chose Shelter. We had a good lunch there last year after a lengthy walk in the sun on Long Beach: shrimp sandwich for me, which is no longer on the menu, and ling cod with chips for my partner. It was tasty and we were quite satisfied. Dinner this time around started with a raspberry bellini for me and a glass of sparkling wine for him. The ambiance is a little more lively here. Many options for seating. We enjoyed sipping our drinks while people-watching. For an appetizer, and there's a theme here if you've read my other reviews LOL, I had the warm chèvre salad. The braised greens were surprisingly good! Bacon, onions, garlic, goat cheese...what's not to like? Again, serving this kind of salad with a nice, light apple cider vinaigrette is the key to showcasing the main ingredients. My partner had a couple of oysters and found them to be very fresh. My entree was the roasted chicken breast with potatos, parsnips, onions, bacon and jus. It's the epitome of home-style comfort food. Great job! My partner had the roasted lamb sirloin with squash, potato gnocchi, cauliflower and kale and was happily contented. Dining at Shelter was the perfect way to end a long day of walking in the mist on Wick Beach. Try it...you'll like it.
We went there for lunch and dinner. Both occasions we had rude welcome from the hostesses. We were deciding where to sit (shade or not) and the afternoon hostess told us that she doesn't care where we sit in an abrupt manner. We had very friendly waitress and waiter though. Went back for dinner because a) the appetizers were very very delicious, b) we won't experience the lake/roadside ambiance in the city and c) maybe the hostess was just having a bad day. Dinner hostess was just as bad. We had to wait for her to finish chatting with another guest for 4 mins before getting any acknowledgement. It was the manner they delivered their rudeness that we wouldn't consider going back ever.
