Taste of Singapore serves authentic Singaporean and Malaysian cuisine.
We went here for lunch. This is not a "real" restaurant, just a cafe which also sells Indian/Singaporean groceries.
We had beef satay, mee goreng, nasi biryani and beef rendang. The food came out in about 10 minutes. Clearly some things had been made fresh and some had been reheated (we could hear the microwave beeping in the kitchen).
Satay was not the traditional grilled strips of meat, it was more like kebab (ground beef on a skewer). It was OK but very dry. Served with squares of onions - not very appetizing. The peanut sauce was good. Well one of us liked it anyway - my husband didn't like it because it was too spicy and should have been more sweet and mild.
Mee goreng was better than some we've had, but still not the best (Tamarind Hill has the best on our opinion). It was spicy with tofu and chinese vegetables. Unfortunately it did not have fresh chicken (looked like bits of deep fried chicken).
Beef rendang was good - nice coconut flavour and the beef was tender - but the dish was very dry - we would have preferred more sauce.
Nasi biryani was awful. The rice was very oily and sweet - biryani is not supposed to be sweet at all. The chicken was obviously fried chicken from the day before, it was pretty hard. Also there were no meaty parts, just wings and the backbone. Real biryani is supposed to have fresh chicken sauteed on the stovetop and then layered with rice - never deep fried chicken.
Overall this place is very unappealing. The half cafe/half grocery store ambiance was distracting and we could smell the packaged Indian spices from across the room. The food was edible but not worth going back for at all. Service was ok, waitress was a 15 year old girl who was obviously trying to give good service, but - 15 year olds should not be waiting tables.
I come to this restaurant every weekend so often for lunch. Their food is good, decently priced, quick, and always warms your tummy. I always order the xiao long bao (staple item), beef wrapped in onion pancake, wontons in sweet and spicy sauce (the wontons itself is nothing special but the sauce is so good), and noodles (either the Dan Dan noodles or the pork chop noodles). Whenever I crave Shanghai food, I always come to this place
Taste of Singapore is a small family run place that focuses on Muslim Singaporean food. You will not find pork or alcohol on their menu; in fact they claim to be halal. Upon perusing the menu we decided what we wanted. Much to our shegrin most items we wanted were not available. I think they had 1 out of 5 dishes we wanted available. No satay, no char kway teow, no chicken rice. We were debating going somewhere else to eat at about this point. They did recommend some dishes and we decided to stay as we were running out of time as my Mom had to get to work. We ordered their nasi biryani, beef rendang and peppercorn fish. All dishes were $9.00 , which was pretty reasonable considering the portion sizes. The nasi biryani was excellent. The chicken pieces were very juicy and tender and the rice was well spiced. It was probably the best biryani I have had in Vancouver. Usually we avoid ordering biryani as it is either too greasy or the meat is way too dry. The beef rendang was also good. I wasn’t looking forward to eating rendang as most places we go use fatty hunks of beef brisket. I think they used stewing beef in their rendang which was a plus to me. Though rendang usually permeates with the smell and flavour of coconut, this one didn’t. I did feel the coconut flavour was missing. The fish we ordered was lightly dusted in flour and pepper and deep fried. It was tossed with crispy tiny dried shrimp, fried shallots, and garlic. We found the fish a bit too salty for our liking but the the shallots and garlic went well with the plain rice they gave us with the rendang. Overall we will definitely be back, hopefully next time they will have their menu woes sorted out
The best mee goreng I have ever tasted. Don't have to go back home to taste authentic food. Prices are very reasonable and the portions are huge. Most of all the ambiance is very comforting. Malay music playing in the background...and the best part the owner speaks malay. Was there on a friday night and it was packed...but the owner still made his way around the tables to talk to everyone. We felt very welcome.
