This place is very interesting. The owners offer a few different African dishes daily. I liked that they offered fish, both tilapia and salmon. I've read about palm oil as it's a cooking ingredient also used in Latin American cooking and has a reddish hue. They use palm oil here in some dishes. There is a small grocery section that sells palm oil as well. They also sell African videos. Back to the food the spinach dish was very tasty. The salmon fillet was nice as well. They have black beans and rice topped off with a thick spiced tomato sauce that I really liked. The baked chicken was alright but I recommend the fish more. They serve vegetarian Jollop rice but I thought the black bean rice was better. The other veggie dish they offer has beans in it, but I thought the spinach was tastier. The owners are flexible enough to offer a sampling of their dishes in a combo. Also they have some special dishes that can be requested such as peanut soup. They also sell kinke which is like a corn polenta. Overall I was impressed by the food, it was all authentic. The owners were warm and friendly and patient in explaining the dishes. They also have tailored dishes a bit to Canadians as they use a bit less oil, and try to stay away from frying. It's a bit dodgy parking in the back as the Whalley homeless congregate in the parking lot next door. It's probably better not to go there alone. Overall it's recommended as this type of African food is very hard to find in Vancouver.
Becky is a most congenial hostess. Very interesting menu and atmosphere.
I think this would make a very nice take out place. So handy after a long day
at the office. The ingredients seem to be healthy and prepared with care.
I particularly enjoyed the rice dishes. I am not sure what kind of rice Becky
uses but it can stand on its own for sure.
Great home cooked style West African food. The food in particular is cooked in the Ghanian style. The hosts were really friendly and guided me to the basics of West African food and eating style as well as being extrememly friendly. Also bought some West African groceries as well. Had Fufu and Pepper and Ox soup. Great stuff, very filling and tasty. Great selection of West African food in large portions. Will be back.
