I have been here a few times.The place is unfortunately a little hidden but worth discovering.The neighborhood is a little rough but inside is very warm and cozy atmosphere.Is a small place but the people are very friendly.
I tried both the chicken and beef soft tacos-chicken was the better of the two.The menu is bigger than the website shows i think.Haven't yet done breakfast but it looks good!
The family is like the restaurant~ cute , warm, and tiny.Very nice people and did i mention authentic?
I was told to come here by a friend of mine, so I decided to give it a shot. I never used to go for Mexican food, but I wanted to more often. so I started coming here with my wife. We usually get the same thing. I get a beef or chicken Burrito with half green/half red salsa baked in the oven. My wife is Vegan, so she gets the Vegetarian Burrito the same way with half green/half red salsa. They come in a pretty large size. I enjoy the flavors and texture. I have no complaints about the food. Same with my wife. She says its the best Vegetarian Burrito she's had. Usually when we go, there's only like 1-2 people in there, so its nice a quiet. The staff are friendly, as it is a Family owned restaurant. I have been here a total of about 5 times and all the times I have been here, it has been the same experience. I will try other Mexican restaurants to compare, but as for now, this is my place...
In a place like the Lower Mainland, where it is so hard to find real, authentic Mexican food, this place is a breath of fresh air. It appears to be family run, has a few grocery items you can get if you need, and serves good, fresh food.
If you're looking for Tex-Mex style stuff (hard shell "tacos" and humongous burritos), this is not the place for you. There are many other places that cater to that. This is real down-home cooking like you would actually get in Mexico.
Oh how I wanted these other reviews to be true, so I took a party of 4 with me to the Taqueria Jalisco in Surrey based on the good reviews on this site and others. Unfortunately, all of us had a horrible dining experience. A couple of loud, inebriated gents were eating away at their nachos slugging back beer, which I guess are the regular patrons Mexican restaurants rely on to survive in the lower mainland? This place is definitely more of a sports bar type place than a restaurant, and actually there are many pubs and bars that serve better nachos and Mexican or Tex-Mex type stuff.
I wanted to report that the people were friendly or attentive but they didn't care that I only took 2 bites. There wasn't even a "do you want this to take home?" or anything. They seemed interested in getting people in and out of there. Moreover, the prices are outrageous. There is no chance we caught this place on an "off" day. Our table was dirty, the restaurant was tacky and cheaply decorated and nobody cared. Shame.
For those that are forced to live in a Mexican Restaurant Challenged place like Vancouver, and who have known and appreciated really good Mexican food such as that which can be found in California, or Arizona, or even Mexico, look no further. This little hole in the wall taqueria in of all places 'Newton', is a reason to finally know a place to go where real Mexican is served, unabashed and without all the middle class frills and phony hispanicness which passes in most wannabe restaurants in these parts. Carne Asada tacos with chopped and grilled thin beaf on two small corn tortillas, just like the real thing. Cheese or chicken enchiladas with the correct sauce, and so on. $2.00 each for little tacos is not cheap, but unlike most Mexican restaurants in our un-mexican environment the restaurant is still there at least five years later.
I'd been to La Conquistadora and while it was "okay" I still craved a little more... well, Tex Mex in my life. Having found this place on Dine Here, we stopped by for a bite. Friday night, yes, but still, steady stream of people coming in for a bite, most of whom were not ordering in English - always a great sign. Had some enchiladas (3 big ones!) and a chimichanga (huge!!!) left with leftovers and full bellies. Next time will definitely have the tacos and find a way to get the guacamole I saw moving around the small, but comfortable, restaurant.
Few things to note:
1. Seems to keep weird hours. We tried to come before and even though it said they SHOULD be open, they weren't.
2. NOT LICENSED so if you are craving a marg? Bring it with you. I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to BYOB since it seems to be a small place. If not, they do take out.
3. Small busy spot so I suspect there could be a wait.
4. Food is made fresh from a very small kitchen - minor wait, but was provided with chips and three salsas. Could have used more chips but that's a really minor complaint and comes mostly from being spoiled in the US.Otherwise definitely outstanding. My husband stated it was the best chimi he'd had... which is saying a lot.
