Made a trip out to Surrey because of all the rave reviews of this place - most of the reviews seem pretty accurate. It's not the cleanest pho restaurant I've ever been to, but it's fine - a little sticky. It seems like it is always busy. I liked the staff, they're rushed but friendly and helpful.
The food is authentic, pho was good, iced coffee was excellent, but my favorite was the lemongrass chicken - really nice cuts of perfectly cooked chicken on fresh noodles and lots of veggies and herbs. Will definitely drop in again if I'm in the neighborhood.
Now that I am obessed with finding the best bun bo hue in the city, I think that I have found it here at Pho Tau Bay. I've already said that their pho is probably the best in Surrey, but their Bun Bo Hue is probably the best that I have had so far.
Large bowl is $6.25. It is loaded with meat and noodles. Here they give you the standard beef brisket and vietnamese ham, but they also give you meat "nuggets" made out of vietnamese ham paste, which I also enjoy. Unlike other places, I think this place serves it "authentic", with the pork knuckle and also a cube of coagulated pork or beef's blood???? I can definitely leave the knuckle, as it is just fat and skin and the blood....that's just strange. In any event, the broth is spicy, without being too spicy and it's one of the best bargains for what you get.
Overall, I'd say that their bun bo hue is a 8.5/10.
My friend calls this the best Pho place in town and I went here for the first time with him. Me being more of a vermicelli as opposed to a pho guy, I ordered the vermicelli with spring rolls and it was not very good. The portions were quite small and the spring rolls were meager and of poor quality. I cannot comment on the pho, but if you are looking for good vermicelli, this is not the place for it.
I went there with a friend and her family on a Sunday afternoon. the place was jam-packed and ppl lining up outside. we got our table in 10 min. i ordered their #3 rare beef and meat balls. their broth was so good, lots of meats and I liked the fact that the soup was still hot by the time I finished. Highly recommend it
I have been a regular here for years. It does get busy, and it could be a bit cleaner, but I go there for the food, and never had a problem. Staff is fast and friendly, and there are ample servings of meat, fixings, etc. It's a definate local favorite, and sometimes there is a wait to get seated, especially on the weekend. When all the locals go there (Vietnamese) you know it's a good place, and this is coming from a non asian (myself)
I am reviewing the new location in Newton:
Once per week we eat at this restaurant and for good reason. The staff call us by our first names, the food is fantastic, fresh and healthy. The ambiance is wonderful with a giant aquarium and beautiful fish. I order the #1 but in a spicy broth...... Outstanding with tons of meat. Beef stew is good as well.... Very filling. My wife enjoys #30. And my son a child sized #11. I am so very pleased to have quality pho in my neighbourhood. The three of us eat for $25. We always leave a $5-6 tip as the staff are wonderful, friendly and efficient. Thank you Pho Tau Bay. You should be proud of your new location!!! Don't change a thing
We've been going for years as well and the Pho is what we go here for. #3 with the raw beef on the side, as i like to flash cook my beef to ensure its medium rare qualities. mmmmm...
A great place to go for a quick bowl of pho for under 10 bucks (including tax n tip), if you dont mind the poorly picked furniture and decorations.
Very well known in the Vietnamese community.
I've been there 6 times when I was on Surrey, Canada with my family last summer. It happened that our hotel was so close to the restaurant, we kept came back after we try it for the first time there, we had pho; rice dishes and other type of noodles and my daugter had something else that forgot and we're all got good food. we think about came back there when a have another chance to be in BC, Canada again.
I tried this place when it first opened and it was terrible.
I went there a few days ago on the advice of a friend and thought i would give it another try.
I was pleasantly surpised. Very good soup , but like others have said thats about as far as this place goes.
If you want a good bowl, give them a try.
I went to Pho Tau Bay because of the good rates I read on this site and I was extremely disappointed. Our server first of all was very stressed for some reason, I dont know why because there were barely any people. Then the food came all at different times, I got mine like 20 minutes before anybody else, andthen another person got theirs 5 minutes later and the rest got theirs like 10 minutes later. So from the beginning I was a little disappointed. The food was not that good, the chicken soup was good but those who ordered noodles were very disappointed becase they were kind of cold, and sticking together by the bunches as if they are old noodles that have been sitting there for days. I am not Vietnamese but I have been to a lot of Vietnamese restaurants and all of them are absolutely better than this one. I hate to give negative reviews but I just want to let people know when they go to Pho Tau Bay, don't go too excited as I went thinking it was going to be awesome as the other reviews say. The place is also not a very nice place looks very dirty to me.
This is my favourite pho stop. Always busy with Vietnamese regulars and friendly staff (as friendly as you can get without actually talking I guess), the pho is always great with ample servings of meat. I also like the spring rolls and salad rolls.
