Pho Hoa restaurants feature naturally flavored, low-calorie soups with the choicest slices of brisket, flank, eye round steak. Each bowl of soup is accompanied with fresh coriander leaves, bean sprouts, hot peppers, and lemon wedges.
Lunch time today I was driving by. It was windy and rainy, and I thought, "yeah, pho would be good..."
Very few people in the place, but it still took a while to get someone to take my (very simple) order.
(...maybe because I was not Asian?)...the server brought just bean sprouts on a plate to go with my pho. When I asked for the lime, chilies and basil, she was surprised....
It was...OK. Since going to other places nearby, I am beginning to recognize this as a chain outlet, and a "lowest common denominator" sort of place.
It was hot, filling. There are much better places in the neighbourhood.
I'd like to start out by saying that I'm not a believer in franchised pho. Yes, its a good concept, but pho is one of those dishes that are unique to the cook -- everyone makes it just a little differently, and the subtle tastes should be recognized, much like chilli or pad thai out there =)
I've been to this location of pho hoa many times, usually after all of the other local pho places are closed. Don't get me wrong, it still satisfies when you have the craving for pho, but it's bare minimum at best what great pho can be.
Their specialty drinks aren't always available as well, and last time I ordered the avocado shake with pearls, they forgot the drink. When I reminded the waitress, she brought the drink but then forgot the pearls. I pointed this out and she said I never ordered it with pearls. Then she came back with the same drink, very obviously messed up as she added the pearls into it after. Not very professional, not very good service.... but it's the only pho place opened til midnight...
This was my second visit. The first wasn't that great but it had just opened so I thought that I would give it a chance after doing some shopping at the asian market next door. I understand that this may be a franchise Pho restaurant. The second visit wasn't much better than the first. There are a number of better Pho houses in Surrey.
Next door in the market you will find some of the best Vietnamese subs in the lower mainland. Special sub for $2.25.
First time I tried Pho Hoa, it wasn't really satisfying.. My bowl of pho was pretty much cold. Service was poor, I tried getting the waitress's attention but she never actually look around if any customers need help at the time i was there. Although the food came out fast and all, but the quality of the broth just didn't hit the spot for me.
A place to eat at night, if you're desperate for pho.
Definetly my first and last experience here.
The food is very westernized i found. They actually explain dishes in the menu. Not that , that is a bad thing.
Food is ok, but by far not great. The thing i like about this place is its opent till1 am . The only time i eat there is when others are closed
If you enjoy being left alone while dining, then this is the place for you. You have to beg for water, utensils, any beverages, extra napkins etc. The food is fine. The back entrance smells like an old rotten fish mixed with mothballs. I gag every time I go in. Luckily I have found a few other places that are better.
Absolutely what one expects from a Pho restaurant: cheap tasty food and non-existent service. If you're expecting service from a pho restaurant, well... don't.
Pho Hoa will take care of your pho cravings and is a great fast and cheap meal option. Just make sure you ask for everything you need when you're ordering, otherwise you won't see the servers until you go up to pay your bill.
Went there a few weeks back with my family. the pho was not tasty and luke warm. their lemon grass chicken is not grilled but rather pan fried. what a waste of money, considering I can pan fry my own chicken way better at home. the utensils are left for self-serve which has lots of health issues imo. considering everyone is touching all the spoons or forks when ordering a meal that requires them. the waitress was not attentive and the place was not clean either. I have always been a fan of vietnamese food and have been to many great vietnamese restaurant, but this particular restaurant just isn't worth it. will not be returning.
I went here some family and friends. The full-colour menu has lots to offer and has a section for people that are new to Vietnamese food.
I ordered the steak and beef ball pho and two shrimp salad-rolls. There was lots of steak in the soup but only four small meatballs. The overall flavour was good, the broth was nice. The salad rolls were okay at first, until I got to the shrimp which tasted old and rubbery.
The service was some of the worst around. We had to ask for a fork 3 times. The teapot wasn't refilled until we asked several times. There was only one other person in the dinning room so it's not like the server was super busy.
Value is a tricky thing with this place. The portions were large, and the food was alright, but the service brings down the feeling of value.
Tables were dirty and the place didn't seem well kept. The bathrooms were disgusting.
I won't be going back
I've been here a few times now and I can't complain too much about it. Decent pho, good value, but shoddy service at times.
FOOD: I've come to enjoy the pho here and like what I get(mind you I order the same dish), that can come with variations. Simply put they have made a couple mistakes a few times. The pho I order doesn't come with beef tripe, but on 2 separate occasions it has. However, lucky for them I like beef tripe so it doesn't bother me(depending on your server). The pho is good and always piiping hot when I get mine. I personally can't complain too much about it, the quality is consistent.
SERVICE: This is were improvement is needed. Depending on your server, you can look forward too a wrong order or being ignored. The waiteress(depending on who serves you), may be a pain in rear to deal with.
VALUE: Personally for me I can fill up ess than $10!!!!!!!!!! That being said, for amonut of food you get served, not bad at all!!!!!
AMBIANCE: Not much of an ambiance going on here in regards to its vietnamese background.
Overall, inexpensive and worth a try!!!!!!
