A family-run restaurant with casual Chinese cuisine. Delivery and take-out orders available.
Went here for a Sunday lunch with the family. We had to get our own highchairs from the side of the restaurant. The highchairs were stained and flithy but we had no other choice. The owner/waiter came to our table and tossed the utensils, dishes and hot sauce on the table. Clanking as it hit the glass table cover. We thought that this was strange and a bit rude but whatever I thought. Then we waited and waited for him to come over to take our order. It tool 10-12 mins and with kids that is a very long time. The better half was getting upset that the service was so subpar and wanted to leave, but I thought since we were here we should stay. Should have listen to the Mrs. We ordered our 3 dishes, beef brisket with noodle in soup, shanghai noodles and mixed meat with noodles in a spicy sauce. When the food arrived, I asked for some chilli oil, the owner/waiter took our hot sauce away and came back with the chilli oil. I thought that was rude, I said I wanted chilli oil, not to take the hot sauce away as my wife uses that hot sauce. Then he grabbed the fork from the kids and said that they might poke their eyes out. They were eating with it and that would be my judgement call to how I want to parent my child not his. That behaviour even pissed off the Mrs more. Now I was agreeing with her. Throughout the whole meal, he did not come over our table to refill our tea or water. I felt that families with young kids are not welcome. So when one of the kids spilled food off the table, normally I would be more concern and clean it up, not this time. Very disappointed in this restaurant. It used to be decent and close to home. But now I would go elsewhere for my chinese food. Also the food was not up to par. The food tasted better and had more ingredients the last time I visited. Would not return back to this place.
The most consistent Chinese dining in Surrey. I have gone to On Yuen since they opened many years ago and their service is still exactly the same as I remember til this day. It is a friendly, family - run joint and Eric, the owner usually calls his customers by name. His memory is quite amazing, not only remembering regulars' names, but also their kids' names and what sports they're enrolled in, etc.
Food is standard Chinese fare, not huge on details and plating but delivers solid quality everytime. Complimentary fruit and fortune cookies along with mango pudding are also served for dessert. A little extra like the mango pudding and the owner's sincerity really go a long way.
The restaurant also have some specialty dishes like crab, fish mau soup and peking duck. Although not the best place to have these, it's the one of the few places with it available in Surrey / Fraser Valley.
Lunch specials start at $5 so ... can't go wrong :D
The GF and I decided to go here for dinner because other reviewers talked so highly about the honey garlic boneless pork.
We arrived around 8PM and there were 4 other customers at the restaurant. We ordered the honey garlic boneless pork and beef & tomato fried rice. Literally, 5 minutes later the food comes out. Five minutes! Keep in mind this is not a fast food restaurant. We were very shocked at how fast it came out. Not sure if it was because the cooks had no other orders so they focused on ours or maybe it was previously made.
The pork had a very dull presentation. Looked bland and tasteless. Also would prefer more beef on the fried rice. Upon tasting the food, we knew something wasn't quite right. The pork was a disappointment as it was nothing like what the reviewers had said. Granted it was last reviewed a year ago, maybe the quality went down. It has a weird overcooked, burnt, re-heated kind of taste. As for the rice, it was hard and lacked sufficient amounts of beef. The rice was definitely old. The dishes were not steaming, hot like it normally would if it was cooked fresh.
Service was outstanding and they were very nice. It's a shame the food was such a disappointment. We won't be going back.
We always look at the reviews before ordering and this is the first time it was wrong . On Yuen had great service, but when I brought the food home , most of the containers were 2/3 full. I do not know about others but when ever I get take out the containers are bulging with food. They also used the smaller containers, the ones most places use for their higher priced dishes ie: sweet and sour pork or beef and broccoli. A very cheap dish to make is rice, and all we asked for was chicken fried, and it was in a small container and 2/3 full. This was true for our 2 rice dishes and our noodle dish. Where I normally order from the beef dish is so full it is overflowing. My wonton soup broth was excellent, but the wonton itself was so over cooked it was falling apart, I threw it out. I will never go to or order from this place again.
On Yuen Chinese Restaurant is a successful establishment that knows their customers very well. The menu is filled with popular selections that most white people or western tastes have grown to like. Even the service is very good. The owners treat their customer really well.
The food is quite tasty. However, it lacks any true essence of cultural identity because this place reminds me too much of the Chinese food anyone can get at a Shopping Mall Food Fair. A watered down version of the real thing.
If you like the Chinese Food that White people or western tastes like to eat, check this place out. However, I'd rather spend my money on more authentic dishes that can easily be found in Vancouver.
We finally found a Chinese restuarant in our neighbourhood that is worth ordering from. It's not a very large restaurant and it's sort of wedged in the middle of a strip mall, so you could very easily miss it.
Food: Every time we've ordered from here, the food has been consistently good. It might not be as tasty as some of the Chinese restaurants you find in Richmond or Vancouver but it's still good.
Service: We've only ordered take-out from here but the service is always very good. They always greet you with a smile, take your order promptly and the food comes out super quick. Also, if you're sitting there waiting, they will offer you tea or water (no charge of course).
Value: The prices just recently went up by 25-50 cents for some items but the items are all the same. The portions are reasonable...maybe a tad small for the price.
Ambiance: Only ordered take-out but there's a little too much flourescent lights to give it that warm ambiance. :o)
Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone that lives in the area.
We ordered the dinner for four for delivery on Sunday night and were really happy with it. We also ordered eggrolls which were awesome. The chop suey was flavorful with tender beef and perfectly cooked veggies, we only wished that there had been more. Our only complaint would be that the almond chicken was pretty greasey. The sweet and sour pork was really lean and a very generous portion. The wontons in the wonton soup seemed to be homemade and were excellent. They looked like they had a lot of shrimp in them; the broth was also very good. The fried rice and chow mein rounded off things well neither were greasey and both were very tastey! Kudos to On Yuen we will be ordering from them again!!
I go to school in the area, and have been having trouble finding a good place to eat. I decided to try On Yuen, and was surprised by the great food for its cheap price. Obviously, I've only tried the lunch deals, but that's already good enough. $5-6 for a massive plate of pretty much anything on top of rice or noodles. Yum. What's even better is the owner guy, who is nice to everyone and always cuts the actual price. There hasnt been a single time where he hasnt cut 25-50 cents off of my order. Great place to have a quick lunch, again, the food isn't outstanding, but it's totally worth the 5$.
