Indian cuisine in an unassuming location
We love this place. The restaurant is clean unlike many to which we have been. The portions are great. My wife always brings home a doggie bag. I can only just finish mine. We usually start by sharing a samosa appy. (You get 2 so it is great for sharing.) We order the garlic naan with our dinner. Don't forget to ask for the garlic naan. One order of naan is more than enough for 2 people. We usually order their signature dish, "Mango Buttered Chicken". This is to die for! Imagine succulent buttered chicken with tangy mango undertones. WOW! If you don't like a bit of sweetness in your dinner, then you may want to think twice about this dish. However, give it a try. The sweetness is well balanced and is more fruity than sweet. After all it is Mango. I always order HOT! My wife likes Medium. I once ordered suicide on a dare and it was too hot. I could eat it but the spice hid the other flavours and I paid for it later. But if hot hot hot is your thing, they can challenge you, just make sure you tell them that is what you want.
Price wise, the dishes are in the normal dining out range for a sit down dinner. What we really like is they do not gouge you for a bottle of wine. They make very little mark up and serve quality wines. Most restaurants we have been to double the retail price on wine. The My Village price is only a small percent above retail. For example, a favourite of ours that we pay $24 in the liquor store, they charge $28/bottle. (Price example Jan 2012)
As for the wines, this restaurant supports our local wineries. This is one of the few places in this area that features mainly wine from wineries within 100 miles. This tells us as customers that they are conscious about supporting and promoting our local economy. That is a key reason for our support. The food, service, and quiet ambiance is important as well.
In some ways, I would like to keep this place a secret. We always get our favorite seat and we like a quiet environment. However, it would not be right to keep this a secret and the more people that discover "My Village", the better chance it will always be there for us.
We recently visited this Indian restaurant located in South Surrey on 152nd St. We've been to many Indian restaurants throughout Vancouver, Surrey, Ottawa, Toronto & Delhi.
The food was a big disappointment. We ordered the lamb vindaloo which tasted like it came from a jar (Patak's to be specific). The butter chicken was not impressive and was sweet. The naan bread was fluffy and was not cooked in the tandoori clay oven. It was more like fluffy pita bread. The last item we ordered was bangan partha (eggplant) which stated on the menu was cooked in a clay oven. We could tell it was not cooked in a clay oven and appeared to be steamed dish with no taste of the eggplant being seared in a clayoven. Now, I know what bangan partha should look and taste like!
The three dishes in total was $58 dollars...a complete downer!
Hubby and I went here for lunch just after New Year. We ordered spinach and panir, a pulao, raita, naan and a chicken dish. We asked for "medium" heat.
The chicken was OK, but quite mild.
The spinach paneer tasted musty, either the spices were old or the spinach was. It was also that olive drab colour spinach gets to be when cooked too long. Also had to hunt for the paneer, not much of it in there. This dish was also quite mild.
The rice was fine, the raita was fine, the naan bread was fine. BUT, I guess we need to specify "Canadian folks" medium versus "Punjabi folks" medium. I mentioned that the heat level was quite low, and the lady seemed surprised.... "You ASKED for medium!"
Nice little restaurant, service was friendly and prompt. I wouldn't go back just because it was slightly more expensive than other Indian/Pakistani restaurants in Surrey, and the quality was not as good as some....
Note sure how many people know about this place (I added the first review) because it isn't always full when we go semi-regularly - once a month maybe. Could be the unassuming location in a strip mall?
I highly recommend this place - the food is really good and if you like it spicy - ask for "hot" and say it with some enthusiasm and you won't be dissapointed.
The palaak paneer and rogan josh are my favorites and the naan is delicious - always get some raita to counter the heat.
Haven't tried many indian restaurants since moving here but so far this is our favorite.
Prices are a little high but portions are big and food is really, really good.
