Minake Sushi serves Japanese food in Surrey. Dine in or pickup.
My fiance and I have tried Japanese food in many many places throughout the lower mainland and we were blown away the first time we tried Minake. The sushi completely amazed us in quality and the tempura was so good I went back on my word about not liking it. The tempura batter is of only the highest quality and we can not go there without ordering a variety. The fish is also so fresh that you can not smell anything until you taste it and we find it very easy to overeat and not realize it. Another star point is the quantity, for example the Udon noodle bowl is absolutely huge with all sorts of veggies and spices, (I'm sure we've all ordered Udon with high hopes just to find it's an expensive bowl of noodles sitting in a shallow pool of plain water...blah)
We keep trying other places that are closer or more convenient but Minake has set our standard so high that no one else had been been good enough to get us to try them more than once. We now travel from central Burnaby to Newton every week to enjoy our favorite food, and we can enjoy a movie afterwards since the theatre is so close!
We also love their music selection and reading the "coffee news" while we wait. They are very reasonably priced considering they use such high quality ingredients and they work very hard to prepare everything as fast as possible which is quite impressive for only the 2 or 3 of them working there; even if you have a few people ahead of you it is worth the wait. They are very polite people and if you get to know them they are also quite charming and comical.
This place is across the plaza from Safeway in Newton. My husband and I went once before in the summer when it first opened and had a similar experience. I gave them another chance today. The service is extremely unfriendly. When I gave my order I didn't even get an acknowledgment back or a single smile the entire time I was there on both occasions. The waitress/cook came to serve the food in a filthy apron.
When my husband and I went for the first time last summer we waited about 45 min. for our food and it wasn't even that busy. Everyone was served out of order, and even though our order was simple rolls, people that came in 20 min. after us were served before we were with out an apology or explanation.
Today when I went it took me 20 min to get a tuna and salmon roll with miso soup and tea. I was the only person in the restaurant at the time. I didn't get my tea or miso soup first while I was waiting, it came with the rest of the food. The sushi itself is extremely bland, sticky and not well rolled. The miso didn't have miso in it I think. The fish in the rolls was the smallest I've ever seen. And the price does not reflect that - $2.95 for a salmon/tuna roll!! Considering the microscopic and not tasty fish inside - not worth it!
On a petty note - all the magazines were crazy old - like from 2002. This place just opened up in the summer! Very strange.
Like the title says - go somewhere else! Cross the street and go to Tokyo Ken's or Tokyo Express or some other place then this place.
