My favorite place for butter chicken hands down. I always pair it with garlic naan, basmati rice and green chutney. The decor is really nice too. It does take time for the food to come out so im usually prepared to wait for a good 15-20 mins.
Ultimately if I want to eat a nice east Indian meal this place my first choice.
After reading all the great reviews on here I decided to try it for myself.
Being a fan of butter chicken I tend to never stray away, but I decided to try the chicken tikka masala (extra spicy) it was awesome. definitely not as greasy and heavy feeling as the butter chicken dishes I've tried. the side order of rice I got must have been 2 pounds, there's so much.
also got an order of garlic na'an and regular na'an bread. both were delicious. fluffy and chewy at the same time. the veggie pakora was very tasty, and the portions were huge. there's probably 30 pieces of pakora in this take-out container. I'm excited for leftovers tomorrow
you also get a 10% discount when you pick it up, so for all this it was just over 20 bucks. i'll definitely be going back
We made reservations for a group of 6 of us. The hostess who sat us was extremely pleasant and very helpful. Then our server came, a young teenage male. Three of us ordered the mahek dinner special with extra butter chicken as opposed to the lamb curry which came with it because none of us ate lamb. The others ordered a vegetarian platter and the chicken korma which I did have a taste of and it was good. When he brought out our meals, he only brought two because he had forgotten to enter the third order. They both came with lamb curry and no extra butter chicken. When we told him he argued and said that wasn't what we ordered. Anyways, eventually we got the extra butter chicken but the third dinner special still had not been brought out 15 minutes after we received ours. It's not a big deal, mistakes happen but own up to them. Her meal finally came, there was no apology, no acknowledgement of anything on his part. Not once did he refill our waters and we didn't even bother trying to order a drink from the bar because after two attempts and him not bringing us our drinks, we figured forget it. Nothing was taken off the bill, nothing was said. I will not go back based on the service. The food was so so but there is definately better indian food around.
Surrey is home to a large Indo-Canadian population and has the restaurants to go with it. That being said, there is no clear-cut winner and many will swear by different Indian restaurants leaving a newcomer to the rich foods confused where to start!
Mahek is as good a place as any though. Although the quality of Indian food (in my mind) varies wildly between the various restaurants in Surrey, Mahek is a solid choice. The butter chicken is delicious, the nann bread is decent and the samosas do the trick. The rice can be a little on the dry side however, but overall, Mahek works for me.
This place has changed ownership or it's under new management. The original owners tend to open up new restaurants in other locations such as Vancouver.
Now the restaurant is all young faces as servers and cooks. It tastes close enough to before but not as good. Before it was super yummy, it used to be one of the top restaurants for Indian food in Surrey.
We always get the shrimp biryani here, it's delicious and the portions are large. I like that they put red and green peppers in it and it's not swimming in to much grease.
Like the other reviewer I was puzzled by the server, as they didn't ask how spicy we wanted it either.
Also when the dish came it was just biryani, with no accompanying yogurt or mint sauce or small complimentary salad of sliced onions, slices of radish, tomato's or fresh chili's.
When we asked we were just told they had to be ordered off the menu. That seemed odd as those little extra's are usually included.
Their vegetarian dishes here are very good as well. Now to track down where the original owners of this place have opened up their new restaurant...
Do not order their Malai Kofta and Paneer Purji. I had ordered Paneer Purji from here before but for some reason the taste lacked this time. There was hardly any flavour and did not have the right type of spices. Malai Kofta and Shahi Paneer in general is hard to make as all the trick lays in it's sauce.
Even though you see these items in the menu, does not mean that it will be good. So far I can only think of Safaron on Kingsway that has done justice to these dishes! So overall, the above two dishes was not worth $22. Thumbs down!
The meal we had was a good standard indian meal. Nothing spectacular and is good for a first timer. For my family, we have experienced better tasting indian meals. Mahek is acceptable,, but we woiuld rather go elsewhee for better value and taste. Mahek sells tandoori chicken on full and half portions. A customer would think a full portion would be a full chicken and a half ;portion would be hal\f a chicken. No! A full portion is only 4 thighs and 4 drumsticks and half chickn is half of that. It was sort of disappointing when I had a party of 8 people and could only serve one piece to each person. I think the restaurant should make that clear and not deecevie their customers. Not happy at all!
I admit it, we drive all the way to Surrey from Vancouver just to eat at this place. And it is worth it! We only have ordered the vegetarian, so not sure about any of the meat dishes here, but the veggie curries are very large portions and usually quite delicious. We especially like the paneer tikka (grilled panneer -- sort of fajita-style) and palak paneer. Naans are delicious, except the garlic naan because they use fake powdered garlic which ruins the taste. Veggie pakoras are again, a very large serving and quite yummy. Watch out for the chilli baji (breaded and deep fried chillis) they use whole serrano chilis for this and they are SUPER HOT!
The food here is outstanding.
We had the Onion Rings (for the kids, surprisingly GOOD), chicken vindaloo, chicken tandoori and assortment of naans. Everything was very good. The chicken vindaloo was spicy and full of flavours (most places are just spicy) and tandoori was probably the best I've ever had (not that I eat a lot of Indian). The chicken tandoori was red in color. In most other restaurants I visit, it is more orange. Perhaps my memory is failing me.
We had mango lassi for drinks and different ice cream for desserts. Everything was outstanding.
Service was what let me down. The lady server looked like she would rather be somewhere else, while the other 2 male servers were more enthusiastic.
Return? Definitely. But not before I try Asian Spice across the parking lot.
Food: incredible for the price. It's no wonder that it was packed. Large enough portions. Ordered their variety type platter and chicken biryani - just so delicious! The most perfect naans I've ever seen had - no grease and nice and crispy on the outside but moist and fluffy on the inside - I've never had anything like it before. Samosas are really good too. The food is spicy so be careful!!
Service: Quite attentive. Never once had to ask for water. They seemed a little unorganized though as the owner and two other waitresses kept asking up for our drink orders. Other than that, they were completely wonderful! When they misunderstood our order, they fixed it right away with no questions asked!
Ambiance: lovely restaurant with a really neat waterfall bar. Dark enough to add ambiance but with enough light to eat. Def a place you could bring a date.
The food was delicious, the servers were all so pleasant and friendly. This was one of the best evenings our family had, and mind you we are fussy when it comes to good food. We were so pleased, the food was very tasty and well presented. The portions were also hearty, we were all so full and still took home plenty. They have also priced their items very fairly. 100% this place going to be our second home for good food and most wonderful hospitality. Keep up the great work Mahek Restaurant!!
I am such a big fan of butter chicken, I cannot say enough. I have only tried the chicken tikka masala, goat curry, lamb masala, and butter chicken here and I absolutely adore this place. I used to drive all the way out to Vancouver from Surrey to eat Indian because the only place I knew was the India Bistro. Let's just say, after I found this gem, I never drove out to Surrey for butter chicken cravings again. The sauces are rich in texture, tone, and just speaks for itself. The na'an is the best I've ever had here, and the rice is pretty good too. The only thing I'd comment on is that the chicken can sometimes be dry, I would let the owner know. He is such an awesome guy, loves feedback. He's the one with the British accent, love him!
My friend and I went this restaurant due to all the reviews from dinehere. We both had the special, mine was non-vegie and her was vegie. Mine had the lamb curry, 2 tandori chicken, rice and 2 pieces of naun. My friend was 2 dishes of vegetatiarian dishes, rice and 2 pieces of naun. Both our dishes were good. The naun was excellent, fresh and hot. The service was great and the restaurant was very clean. The dishes was not the best East Indian food that I ever had but it was overall very good. I was impressed with the whole package. Would recommend to others.
I know this place may be a bit expensive than the other Indian restuarants located near by. But the food is worth the price. I ordered Palak paneer it cames with so many pieces of paneer and was thick and well flavoured. The garlic naan was soft and edible. My brother had the tandoori chicken which he enjoyed. The restuarant is pretty extravagant and worth a visit if you want to try high quality Indian food.
I have been to Mahek numerous times, and will continue to go here for the great food & service.
Unlike other Indian restaurants I have been to, this place has a pretty modern setup, and the owner/manager seems to be on top of things hiring nice courteous service staff.
The food is great. Never had any complaints about the food. My family and I always rely on Mahek when we're craving Indian food and it has never disappointed.
The service has always been great and attentive. Probably the best service staff out of all of the Indian restaurants I have been to, which is probably one of the main reasons it stands out when compared to other Indian restaurants.
Overall, I will definitely go to Mahek again & again!!!
I read the reviews on this Surrey restaurant a while back and have been waiting for a chance to check it out. With a friend visiting from out of town that also like indian food we had our chance tonight and I'm happy to say we weren't dissapointed at all. Well, except for the screaming 1 year old at the next table.
Things didn't start well with our drinks. Both the beer from the tap and the rum and coke were totally flat. That was fixed with no problem. We started with appies and the "Chaat" as someone else recommended along with a fish pakora. The Chaat was incredible and certainly the hit of the evening. The fish pakora was very good.
For the entree's we ordered Chicken Korma and Lamb Tikka Masaala. As well, some Naan and rice of course.
Everything was great. The service was very good. Staff were very cheerful as well as helpful explaining what was in the dish. Never had Chaat before and we asked what it was before ordering.
For the quality the price I thought was very reasonable.
The interior was very nice as well.
A very good restaraunt that will now be my #1 Indian choice.
Surrey needs more quality restaurants.
I never even noticed this restaurant before, despite driving down that street many many times. I tried it out after reading the reviews here and must say that I was impressed.
The upscale decor, friendly staff and quick service only added to the enjoyment.
I tried the Samosas which were fine... average. Also had Chicken Vindaloo and Butter Chicken with both garlic and regular naan and was surprised that they were actually two completely different (and both tasty) flavours, mind you, it should be this way but unfortunately, MANY other indian restaurants use the same curry base with a variety of dishes, making them taste very similar... So I was happy with that.
The only fault I could find is that the chicken vindaloo was very oily, this is like many other Indian restaurants around here, but nevertheless, I enjoyed my meal.
Value: Food was priced on par with other restaurants but has very generous servings, so I gave them 4 stars. I just wish their price for chai included free refills like some other restaurants.
We live in Vancouver but found ourselves in Surrey recently and wanted to try Mahek on 120 Street. It has an inviting stylish sign that is a little hard to see as the restaurant is set back from the street. The interior is dark but not too dark with numerous Buddha heads that we found unusual for an Indian restaurant. We shared a Mahek dinner plate, eggplant bhartha and okra dish (bhindi do praza). The Mahek dinner is very good value at $16.95. It comes with butter chicken, lamb curry, chickpea curry, rice, naan, raita and a rice dessert. This dinner is ample food for one person. We had the leftover eggplant, okra and rice packed up to take home. Service was very accomodating for the two of us, as we had many questions about the menu. The food was not up to Akbar or Vij standard but was as good as Rangoli and better value. If you're in the area, try it for the good food, value, friendly staff and comfortable surroundings.
My wife has been trying to get me to "like" Indian food for some time. We've been to a few and I haven't been all that impressed and to be honest intimidated by the menus. Not here. The staff are very helpful. Not being much of a curry fan I was able to order some very tasty dishes that we both liked. The Chicken Tikka is to die for served steaming hot on a sizzle platter. I also like the Cilantro Chicken Tikka. Vegetable Korma is another must have along with some Basmati rice and Nan bread. Very good. We usually end up taking some home. I have also discovered that their well priced beer is a great accoutrement to the spicy Indian food. We discovered that even though it doesn't say it, Chicken Tikka is considered an appetizer and will show up before any other entrees unless you specify otherwise. Now I must admit I do "like" Indian food after all
I have been to a lot of Indian restaurants and there is one dish that i crave the most which is Shahi Paneer. I didn't find one place that served good shahi paneer until i ordered it here. This place really makes good shahi paneer. Which is the only reason i drag my boy friend here.
There is nothing else that i am particularly fond of. The other curries are alright nothing special. We've tried their chicken biryani, Paneer tikka, dal makhani and chicken vindaloo. They all taste alright. I wished they;d have a bit more originality to them.
Service: So so. The servers never seem interested. The food comes after quite a wait.
Ambiance: The place looks good overall. Has a nice lounge feel to it.
