Great deals on delicious Mexican Food. Lovely decor and great service.
I am a former head chef and have been at this restaurant before and after it has changed hands.
It has it's challenges but was absolutely decent until the new owners arrived.
Why do Asian people try to run a Mexican restaurant in Canada anyway?! There are so many other options.
And here is the ugly truth:
- Food not up to standarts.
- Plates are dirty and not checked by the staff or the owners. Disgusting!
- Doug shells are stored on the oven under the kitchen ventilation system.
- They should be stored in a dry, cool and dark place, away from grease, dirt and contamination.
- The cook doesn't know the menu. Items are missing and the food is burned, dry, or not even hot.
- Cleanliness is not one of the priorities of this establishment. I have seen service staff packing leftovers with bare hands that were not washed after handling money.
The owners aren't even there most of the time to check on quality and seem to run the restaurant more as a hobby than a business. The menu is still the old one from the previous owners with things blacked out and it looks ridiculous this way.
The restaurant has clearly great potential but is run very poorly.
A shame for such a great spot to be!
This is another example of a Restaurant changing hands.
I went there a few years ago when it has other owners, the food and service was oustanding.
I went again in June 18, 2011 and it was a mess.
The food mediocre, the guacamole was a Chinesse interpretation or version of what guacamole should be in China, and it was horrible.
30 minutes after we arrived, when we were EATING, the waitress began to sweep and clean the garbish in the room in the sourrounding tables, and then they turned the lights off.
Mexican Food is great, tasty, warm and full of flavors and turns, but believe me , Amigo, Luna Loca has anything to do with mexican food. AVOID IT.
We had a large group of 16 people . They had been notified days ahead we would be there. Service was horible. We waited over an hour before everyone got a drink and 90 min before we got our meals. Food was ok but nothing great. After all that they had the gall to put a15% gratuity on each bill which came collectively to over $100. It was such a poor experiance they did not deserve any tip . Avoid this restaurant!!!!
We just attended a birthday party there on Friday night . When we arrived the restaurant was full.
Our party was in the covered patio, the atmosphere were very nice with a fish pond. We had a good time with great food and Mexican beer and Tequila.
We will definitely plan a party there soon
We've dined at Luna Loca twice now, both times have been really enjoyable experiences. The service has always been friendly and efficient, the ambiance makes you feel as though you are in a little cantina, and the food has been fantastic. The vegetarian fajitas were great, nice mix of veggies served sizzling hot, with rice, refried beans and all the fixings on the side, it was so much food I was only able to finish half, would be a good dish to share! We really enjoyed the fresh made chips and salsa at the table, and the sangria was delicious! We'll absolutly be back next time we're craving Mexican!
We saw the place on the Entertainment book and passed by several time. We decided to give it a try. We arrived around 5pm and surprised they have a happy hour menu for 2 for 1 Appetizers. We submitted Entertainment coupon asked the waitress about the happy hour specials. She told us for the coupon we can order anything from the menu and for the happy hour items they are on the first page.
We ordered two appetizers and two dinner entrees and a wine for three of us. When the bill came, the cheapest appetizer was taken off the bill. The waitress confirmed with her coworker that we could either used the coupon or the happy hour menu.
We wonder why we were not told about their rule before we order. What if people order two entrees only or two appetizers only, were they kick them out.
Food: Below average. The portions are big, but the food itself, especially the seafood chimichanga was greasy and fishy.
On the plus side, the chips was fresh.
Service: good that the waitress was always smile.
Value: A bit pricey for rather average food. Looks like a family-owned place can set up whatever rule they want.
Ambiance: the decoration is a bit old. The patio seating is pleasant when the weather is nice.
We found this place because of the Entertainment book. We will not go back because the way they accept the Entertainment book.
We were in the neighbourhood and decided to have Mexican. The place is going through renovations right now and seem to be building an fireplace/bar kinda thing. The place was pretty empty at about 12:30pm with only two other groups of two. I had the Chicken Fajitas & my wife had the Taco Lunch. The server brought out a warm plate of chips & salsa to start and we happily munched away as we waited for our meal. The chicken fajitas came out sizzling with fried onions, chicken breast, red rice & refried beans. Condiments on the side were plenty and I was full after the meal. My wife said the tacos were decent and just enough for her. Total bill was $24 including tip. We were able to enjoy a quiet, unrushed lunch.
Margaritas: Horrible. I don't think a lime ever went near it. Was so syrupy-sugary... just awful. I can honestly say I've never had a worse margarita.
Food: Laughable. Mexican food is about value, simple ingredients, and robust flavours. The beans were gross, over seasoned and the smallest portion I've ever seen. Chips were pretty good but their salsa is lackluster to say the least. Very disappointing.
Service: I think we exist. I am actually typing this review so I must exist. Someone should tell our server.
Cross the border, drive 10 minutes and go to Chihuahua... even that's better. Drive even further and go to Azteca. Mexican people even work there! It's amazing!
Brought my beautiful wife tonight. Here Is my review:
Service: We had prompt service with a smile. Can't ask for better.
Appetizer: The warm chips and salsa were enough appi for both of us, very good.
Entree: My wife had the Burrito, which she said was the best since Chi Chi's, she raved so It must have been good.
Myself, I had the Burrito, taco and enchalada combo and I was very Impressed with the flavor. the quantity was fantastic, I'm 6'3 so I can eat, I was stuffed....with a little room for dessert. Great.
Dessert: It was a stuffed enchikada with chocolate brownie and Ice cream on top. this was awesome....
Booze Tequila sunrise, Chi chi, Pitcher of sangria, and Luna loca coffee...All absolutely wicked!!!
I am pleased to say that this place, all be It out In the boonies was very, very good. I give It an A and It comes with definite return.
After reading many rave reviews on Luna Loca, especially the Vancouver Sun’s, we were itching to know if this was a Mexican restaurant worth writing home (Ottawa) to! So one cold winter day, we ventured out to Surrey to satisfy our curiosity.
We were promptly greeted with a friendly smile as we entered. A basket of complimentary homemade corn chips and salsa were on the table before our order was taken. The chips were so fresh and crispy that we gobbled down shamelessly with our favorite margarita.
As a starter, we shared a Quesadilla and Guacamole Supreme. The large tortilla was smothered with melted cheese, spicy ground beef, tomato, onion, jalapenos, olives, beans – every bit came with the right seasonings. The guacamole was one of the best we have tasted. Creamy yet chunky avocados with just the right amount of tomatoes, onions, lime and cilantro.
Our main dish “Tampiquena Con Asada Para Dos” was unbeatable. It started with an amazingly fresh garden salad, then a perfectly grilled tender, juicy chicken breast and steak, all came with a generous portion of yams, beans, Pico de Gallo, Chilli con Queso, and tortillas.
We had deep fried ice cream, best ever organic coffee, (hand picked from the Mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico – mentioned in the menu) with tequila on the side. What a great way to end our delicious dinner.
After traveling extensively around the globe and eating some great Mexican food, this restaurant is definitely worth to write home to! Yes, if you must ask, the ambiance, service and food were every bit as the rave reviews.
We tried this little mexican restaurant with our family, and were extremely disappointed. This has got to be the worst mexican food we've ever had. Our kids, who eat pretty much any type of food we feed them, disliked it so much we had to take them next door to McDonald's afterwards because they (and we) were still hungry from sending our meals back.
We started with appetizers, which were extremely small portions, barely enough for the 4 of us to share, in fact, the flautas only came with 3, so we had to cut them in half to share with the 4 of us. They were dry, tasteless and had barely any filling. The dinners were the same, tasteless, dry and barely any cheese was used. We left in awe, as we don't know how this place stays in business.
The only good thing we could find to say about it was the margaritas were decent. If you want great, authentic mexican food, skip this place, and instead, go 15 minutes away and drive across the border crossing into Blaine, and go to Pasa Del Norte, it's amazing, authentic, inexpensive, and puts this place to absolute shame. Perhaps the owners should go down there to see how Mexican food is supposed to taste.
I used to come here once a month, but haven't had a chance in the 3 months, so we decided to go back. We had the enchiladas and burritos. The food taste wise is good, however since a new owner came in a few months back the portions have shrunk quite a bit. We were disappointed that the rice, salad took up most of the plate and the main course took up less than a quarter of the plate. The staff have always been nice and continue to keep the service respectable, even though there only appeared to be one server. This place could use a little sprucing up and renovation. It's a bit dark and starting to get dingy. I noticed the bar had a few tile missing and the bar has seen better days. Also the decorations could use some work. We went at 8pm on Sunday and there was only other table occupied. With a little renovation and an increase in serving size (or slight drop in price) this could be one busy place. I hope the new owner takes this advice into consideration.
We stopped in here for lunch and it has been quite awhile since our last visit. The service was friendly and attentive. We had the lunch burrito (beef), came with rice and refried beans, and was very good. Sometimes refried beans have that 'came out of the can taste', but not these, you can taste the difference. The burrito tasted good, the beef very tender, and it was topped in a 'red sauce', and some cheese. We also had the 'torta' sandwich, with a side of soup. I sampled the soup, and it was a bit spicy, ( I really like spicy foods), very good, might have to order that next time. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal, and will return.
This place is a gem. Two for one appetizers between 4:00pm-6:00pm. Delicious food, great decor and wonderful service. Every time I visit it's always pretty empty, but don't let that throw you off. A great Mexican restaurant where the staff is friendly and keeps the free house made chips and salsa flowing.
I came here for lunch one day and the restaurant wasn't very busy. On the door there was a sign for Buy One Get One Half Off on Mondays which looks like a pretty good deal which I will take advantage of next time!
The chips and salsa were really good, and came in a pretty big portion size compared to Las Margaritas on West 4th.
I ordered the Lunch burrito which came with refried beans and rice. The food was very tasty and I will definitely come back here again!
