I don't understand how this place gets ranked #1 they must buy the rank or bribe someone. They were one of the few Japanese places in Surrey but there are other yummier places now.
For the bento boxes, they just reheat some of the food, reheated tempura is just nasty. Even AYCE places don't do this, they cook their fried foods freshly.
The food is served at a restaurant but it's worse food quality then even food court food.
Had a coupon for $9.00 so decided to give it a try. If it was the only sushi restaurant in Surrey I could understand that it would be the best. But if there are others Japanese restaurants and this is the best then Surrey is in trouble. Bento boxes are nothing to rave about but you get what you pay for. The service is another matter. Absolutely the worst service I ever had in a restaurant. Could be they cater to the takeout orders and ignore and restaurant patrons because we are a captive audience. Once you order its hard to walk out no matter how bad the service. I will not return.
I noticed the sign in the window indicating that it was rated #1 Japanese or Sushi restaurant in Surrey. Rated by who? I went there not too long ago because one of favorites around the corner was closed and my daughter and I had a strong desire for some sushi.
Should have saved our money as it was very disappointing. I should have known better. If you in the area I would put my money down on Tokyo Ken instead.
We have been rudely shouted at and refused service by both the owner and the manager of the restaurant. The lady (I've been told she's the manager) came to our table when we wanted to order. But when she saw that I have an Entertainment coupon with me, she started talking very rudely that we cannot understand then she walked away. We did not know what was happening so we called the other server to order. When the manager heard what we ordered, she quickly said, "No you cannot order THAT!" I didn't have any clue what was happening. So I called her to ask. She said that because have a coupon, we cannot order any other food except "Bento C" and "Bento E". She said it in a very mean, rude, disrespectful and discriminatory way!!
My friend, who was celebrating her birthday then, does not eat raw fish and both combo meals have raw fish. She said she will replace the sushi with california rolls. I simply asked how many total california rolls will be in the meal since it already originally comes with 3pcs of california roll. She shouted "4!" then gave me a mean look and walked away right in front of us. Clearly she refused to take my order again.
We were left stunned and didn't know what was happening. Couple of minutes after, the owner from the kitchen (not the manager), came out and posted a sign by the entrance. We didn't know what it was but when we looked, it read "No coupons today!" I stood up and walked towards the kitchen and asked what was going on and if I can order now. The manager rudely shouted at me, "You complain too much so I'm not going to let you order!!". We were really surprised and customers from the other table saw what happened and was stunned too. I asked who the owner is and when the owner came out, he said "You're the one with the coupon?!" Then he walked to the entrance and pointed the sign he just posted! Then he rudely told us that he needs to go back to work and cannot talk to us. At that point, we were very angry and frustrated with how they treated us. Especially my friend who was celebrating her birthday that day and I was with a 2-year-old as well. We left the restaurant right away.
We would have paid full price without any coupon if only the lady had just told us nicely from the start "Sorry but we cannot accept coupons today." Was that too much to do?????
This service, attitude and business practice is totally unacceptable. They didn't treat us with any respect at all, to the point of us feeling harassed just because we came in with a coupon. THEY DO NOT DESERVE YOUR BUSINESS! Please spare yourself from being ridiculed and humiliated and go someplace else.
I went for lunch here on Friday, April 30th with two friends. Food wasn't too bad, but the experience afterwards was certainly unpleasant. Whatever I ate exited my body rather quickly! I heard from one of my other lunch mates who also mentioned she was experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms since the day following that lunch. NASTY!!!
had to send something in so that people dont make the same mistake. my wife and i LOVE sushi (or at least i do, she likes california rolls), and we found this japanese place that delivers. since we just wanted to try it out we had various rolls, no sashimi for me this time. to start the guy was late, but i can understand that much, and when i looked in this big box i was in shock, not much in it! but maybe the food was well worth it? no. the rice was mushy, the rolls were cut thin and OVERstuffed with avacado and mayo. W-T-F?
we usually go to this quiet place called mamake sushi or something along the lines of that in the plaza at newton next to DQ and a liquor store and we love the place (despite many bad reviews). unfortunately, they don't deliver, or else i would never have pizza again.
I'm sorry to report that Kyoto is going downhill. I'm willing to overlook the poor service (maybe they were 2 new waitresses that could not handle 6 tables on a Saturday night) but once the food arrived, I knew this would be out last visit. First, my wife's meal arrived about 5 minutes before the rest of the table. It was also cold and not exactly fresh looking (when the chicken teriyaki is cold, you know there is a problem). My order of tempura-don had a hair embedded in the green pepper and one of the shrimps had broken during cooking so only the upper third was included with my meal. The amount of rice in the dish was also extremly small. I mentioned it to the waitress at the end of the meal (when she finally came back to check on us) and she said sorry and you get the manager. This was the 3rd time that evening that I heard those words from the waitresses to the various tables in the restaurant. The manager never came, but I was told they took off the amount from my bill and they were sorry (I also heard the same story at the table next to us). I'm sorry just is not good enough in this case. I would have spoken to the manager and let her know the situation but she never came. I can overlook poor service (like not having the waitress come back to take our order and having to flag another one after 20 minutes) but the moment the food is sub-par, that's it. So Kyoto Sushi: Enjoy your laurel of Best Sushi in Surrey in 2005 (signs still posted at the entrance) and I'm sorry that I will not returning with my family (and neither will most people from last night).
The food was awful in my opinion and there's not much more to say than that. I'd rather drive up to the T&T and buy the pre-packaged sushi they make. It tastes better, is fresher and has better ambiance. Pretty bad when a restaurant gets beat out by a supermarket for serving food.
For some reason that review wasn't long enough so let me just say that there are a lot better places to eat sushi than this.
There was a $9 off coupon in the Entertainment Book so we thought we'd give it a try. After we got there they said they no longer take the coupon. No problem. Food was okay; service not so good (no refills and slow service).
We got the new coupon book, another $9 coupon was in there. We thought we'd give it another try. We called ahead this time to see if we could use the coupon, they said you could use it.
We got there and talked to the same person we just spoke on the phone with. We ordered our dishes - combo D (vegetarian bento box). Again, food was just okay, service was slow and no refills were offered.
We then gave them our coupon. They waitress said they don't accept the coupon for Bento Box D (which we both ordered). The rest of the boxes they will accept it for.
I told her was crazy. I phoned ahead! She didn't want to listen, she said to use it next time. Next time? I told her there would not be a next time. This is ludacris they advertise with coupons, and whenever you get there they either all of sudden won't accept it or whatever dish you order is somehow excluded.
Very shifty and unethical business practices. Plus the food is average at best and service is terrible. Avoid this place.
I ordered bento box E which included A california roll, ebi sunomono, chicken teriyaki, green salad, and 5 pieces of sashimi. This box is priced at $12.99
The sashimi was good. Decent portions. The sunomono was a bit suspect. The mini shrimp in it didn't seem "sushi grade." As mentioned in Vball guy's review there was some shell pieces in it and a few of them tasted rather ill. The chicken was pretty tasty and was atop a bed of shortgrain rice (different from the standard sushi rice)
The server was very slow, didn't refill my tea and gave us grief about using a coupon.
Including tax and tip I shelled out $15.50 for my meal.
Unlike the terminator, I won't be back.
That's what the Entertainment coupon book stated, I beg to differ. If this place is voted #1 I would hate to see the worst sushi place in Surrey. Gunshow, Mittens, and I decided to try this place out seeing that they had a $9.00 coupon in the Entertainment book.
Upon entering there were a lot of tables that had dirty leftover dishes on them from the past customers who came in and dined. The table in the booth we got was a little bit dirty so the waitress cleaned it off for us. What we were sitting down on was not secured properly onto the floor so every time one of us moved it felt like our seat was going to break off.
Using the coupon was a fiasco, the plan was to order 3 bento boxes and then use the coupon for one of the more expensive rolls. The three of us thought it would be deducted off when we ordered the roll. We were forbidden to do so. We asked why and the waitress said "I asked the boss and he says no, I don't know anything, I just work here" So instead I was permitted to use the coupon for the don bowl instead. Waited forever to get our bill.
The food was standard fair, Mittens got the vegitarian box, salad was wilted and looked very unfresh, yakisoba was bland, rolls looked liked they were hacked like a blind woodsman. He did mention that the only enjoyable part was the tempura.
Ebi sunomono still had shells attatched to the shrimp and tasted spoiled. The addition of the free strand of hair was a nice touch as it turned one off eating any more of it. The chicken teriyaki don bowl tasted good at the time until the ghosts of the chickens were haunting my stomach a few hours later.
Only upside was that they had bubble tea. Three of the patrons have staged an uprising in the land of Kyoto
The service seems to be going down hill, yaki-soba never cooked the same, hours say one thing yet they seem to close earlier a lot of the time.
Owners a very nice, severs are nice but are very slow. It is clean restaurant. We have never had to wait for a table to be cleaned even when they have been busy.
I have been going to Kyoto Sushi 2-4 times per month for the past few years and the service has been hit and miss, however, in the past year it has been more miss than hit. First of all, I will say that I enjoy the food tremendously and that is why I continue to go back and I have no issues with the food. The service, however, is my problem. As others have mentioned, I have had problems with them trying to deny my Entertainment Book coupon, however, I "reminded" the owner lady that I am one of their most loyal customers and there are other places I can go. I have had problems in the past with slow service, and a general overall unfriendliness (but only from the lady owner), however, my main complaints and my reason for not returning ever again is my last two experiences at the restaurant. The first one included being seated at a dirty table and having to ask them to clean it, then after the food arrived we again had to ask for chopsticks and dishes. The waitress then brought a roll to the table and i told her we did not order it. She took it away and five minutes later brought a different roll to the table and again I told her I did not order it. The owner lady then came over to me with the roll in her hand, pointed at me and very rudely stated "You did order this" I informed her that I didnt order that one or the previous one that was brought to me. She then shook her head and turned away.
Because I love the food, I then returned with my daughter and friend last night and OMG, what a terrrible experience. First, we get seated and we waited for at least 15 minutes before anyone came over. We finally got our tea and waited another 15 minutes to get our order taken. When the order arrived, my friend and i got some of our order, yet my daughter had to wait another 10 minutes to get her first item. The owner brought some more items and literally tossed them in the middle of the table, she said a random ``I dont know``, which I`m assuming she meant she didnt know or care who`s order they were and walked away. A waitress came over and asked if we wanted tea and i responded with yes please and my daughter moved her cup towards the waitress but she just walked away and neither of us got tea!! We were very confused. So, it gets worse.....we then finish our meals and because i am a regular customer I know that they always bring complimentary fruit to the table but we literally sat there for 45 minutes with no food, no tea, and no waitress ever even looked at us. Finally when we are presented with two separate bills which we had requested, I notice that they have our orders mixed up and they have higher prices than indicated on the menu. I then called over the owner, which took another 15 minutes, and my friend mentioned our terrrible service and the problems with the bill. The owner was very rude, even laughed at us stating they are very busy. My friend asked for a discount and the owner said she will give a $1 discount!!!! She very reluctantly upped it to $2 then $3. At this time, we just wanted to leave so we went to pay with the ridiculous $3 discount and the new bill had only a $1 discount. When we called her on this she flipped!!! She threw her hands in the air, yelling that she is not making any money if she gave us a $3 discount, threw the bill on the ground and yelled `no more discount` in front of everyone and stormed away and had another girl take our payment. She made a huge scene in front of everyone. I will never return to Kyoto Sushi!!!
not sure why all the bad reviews, everytime i have ordered ( over 30 times) in the last 3 or so years i have had great service, fast and friendly matched by great tasting food. i enjoy my sushi and if you live or or are visiting the newton area this is the only place to order from. i honestly can't think of one time i have been disappointed. the prawn tempura is as close to perfect as you can get, also california , dynamite and salmon maki are all very good. also the beef yakisoba for non sushi lovers is recommended.....ohhh i did order the crispy roll once ( deep fried california roll) i wiould not recomend that one, but other than that order away and feel confident.
They pulled the we don't speak English card then berated me for trying to get a measly 5 dollar credit. I had the credit because I ordered 2 sunomono's from them before and when my friend picked up the order they did not put them in. I called THAT DAY and got the credit from a woman. Today when I went in to redeem it I was berated and belittled because the slip of paper was not attached to the computer. Both the elder Woman and the Man came out, making fun of my story and calling me a liar. The waitress just wanted to get me out of there because she could see that all three of us where getting mad. The man even had the nerve to try to get my name and phone number so that I could never get a credit from them again. Safe to say this is the LAST TIME I WILL GO HERE. Even after I got my food I stuck around to pay for it when I could have just walked out. Would someone who was just trying to get a credit do that? I don't think so. They don't deserve ANY BUSINESS. DON'T GO HERE! I WILL BE TELLING EVERYONE I KNOW TO NEVER GO HERE AGAIN!
I did dine at this restaurant for lunch in the summer. The food was ok. Nothing spectacular.
I called to order take out this evening. When asked if I could use the "Entertainment Coupon" discount for Party Tray order, the lady on the phone rudely said "no, only for dining". She then hangs up the phone. This is totally surprising when I'm seeing this restaurant has been voted 5 times as the Best of Surrey+N.Delta 2002-2006. I'm not sure if management/ownership has changed but I'm definitely not going back there to order anything now.
This used to be our favourite local place for Sushi. Nothing to fancy but a good, nice place for sushi at a good price. However, over the past while the performance has continued to decline to the point that we will no longer come here. The service is so slow that we have to ask multiple times for tea or even the meal. Our teriyaki has come after we are ready to go. Finally, in the same time prices have risen and food quality has declined. Sad to let this place go.
Have gone to this place for more than 10years and told people about it, saying it was my favorite sushi plaec around, it was, but today I vowed never to return. It's traded hands a few times in the past few years and now it is clear that customer service is NOT their top priority. I have had several poor experiences in the past few months, both in quality of food and service. I will not trash them by giving details (way too angry right now anyway, I'll write a book of stuff), but I'm sure that they don't deserve to have all the plaques up on the wall about it being the BEST place in Surrey. It is no longer the best place and it's unfortunate that they've lost many loyal customers because of their lack of attention to how they treat them. Previous owners made it an awesome place and THEY deserve to have those plaques up, present management brings all those years of hard work to shame.
I love sushi and sashimi but having read the previous reviews, I now believe that this restaurant is unclean as I too suffered from diarrhea and vomitting right after eating there a couple of months back.
Will not be back as it is not worth the risk to be eating here on top of the poor service.
My friends and I came in for dinner on a friday night. We sat down for 30 minutes and NO ONE came by to give us water/tea or ANY SERVICE AT ALL. So we called the server over and by that time we were obviously ready to order by then. After 45 minutes our food didn't even come out. We had to ask for the pop that we ordered. It was totally unacceptable that we had to ask for our drinks when its just in a can! The food came out first for one of my friends and the rest of us didn't even get our food till 15 minutes later. When my bento box came out my terriyaki chicken was cold and my gyoza was burnt...Their service is horrible and their food is pretty expensive for the quality that they give you. People that were ordering take out got better service and their food faster than any one in the restaurant...Makes me wonder if they paid to get the reputation as #1 sushi restaurant in Surrey cause they're obviouisly not! I will NEVER go back there again. waste of time and money.
