King Tut's Donair is located in downtown Cloverdale and serves a menu of Middle Eastern dishes including donairs.
First the good stuff. They have all kinds of fillings available, the donairs are very good, stuffed full, and good price at $4.99. We come several times a month to enjoy them.
They have a frequent buyer card. Buy 5 donairs get one free. The staff don't really advertise this promo. The cards are sitting in front of the cash register. Its easy to grab one and ask the cashier for a stamp.
They're open late at night until around 11pm or 2am on weekends. Or so the sign says. Sometimes they close up early around 9 or so. I can see that if business is slow but maybe they need to reevaluate their hours and keep it consistent.
The restaurant is small with a few tables for inside dining. There's a TV with usually sports showing on it and the sign says free Wifi though I've never gone in with a laptop to try that out.
More often than not the pickings will be slim and we're not talking late at night when they might be running low on some fillers. We're talking late afternoon or around suppertime. We've been there many times and asked for a particular donair only to be told they're out of tandoori chicken, falafel, rice, avocados, etc. Sometimes we go through a whole bunch of their donairs only to be told they don't have all the ingredients and finally give up and go down the street for sushi instead!
They have donair fries on the menu but everytime we've asked for them we're told they're out or the clerk has not received training on how to make them.
For an extra $2.50 you can combo your donair with fries (regular not donair) and a can of pop. Three times we've asked for the combo only to have the clerk not put the fries in to cook. Remembering only when she returns to the cash register with the donairs and rushing back to put them down.
Often there is only one staff member on duty so if there are one or two people in front of you it might take 20 minutes to get your order. I went in once with 3 people on duty and 2 people in front of me and it still took over 15 minutes to get my donair (no combo that time).
The best donair to ask for is the regular $4.99 one. The super and king are larger pitas and all that really happens is they stuff more lettuce into them to fill them up, not more of the ingredients that make up that particular donair.
If King Tut gets their act together and puts more staff on, ensures an abundance of ingredients available to last until closing, and training the staff on how to prepare all items on their menu this will be a much nicer place to come for a donair.
There was a coupon online for this place and when I googled it the reviews were really good (huge portions, good value ) so I went ahead and bought a coupon. I went there today and ordered 3 donairs and a tabbouleh salad - 1 regular chicken, 1 regular falafel, and 1 regular halifax.
The girl didn't even KNOW about the coupon and was going to charge me full price. Not a big deal I suppose. The donairs were the most loosely wrapped I've ever seen. Not even wrapped, just made and stuck in a baggie. The tabbouleh was missing the dressing!! Sad. I didn't find the portion size huge, just average, but maybe it depends on who's making the donairs (the owners vs the workers). All in all, I was pretty disappointed, and unfortunately I have one more coupon to renew.
Prices are comparable to other donair joints, and they have lots of different kinds to choose from. Really cool and friendly owner and workers. They also make samosas, which I haven't tried yet, but will. There is another new donaire joint in Cloverdale, and although I haven't been there, I was told King Tut was way better.
