Great steaks, a casual ambiance and friendly, very knowledgeable staff are the proud and reliable trademarks of The Keg Steakhouse & Bar.
Got another gift card so I had to go to The Keg again. Since this location is closest to my house it's the only one I go to. Well, what has changed sine last year when I came? Not much. Service was still slow and bad. Our server didn't come to ask us ONCE how our meal was. The prices seemed to have gone up of course, yet the quality remains the same or lower. The worst part of the meal was everything was luke warm. Nothing was hot except the butter burning over the candle. I'm not sure if it's just this location that is so bad, or if all Keg's are like this. To be honest you can get a SUPERIOR steak dinner at Central City Brewing for HALF the price. I figure the people who continue to support The Keg are people who A.) Can't cook, so they have no idea what a quality meal should be like (especially at this price) or B.) Go to The Keg as a status symbol. Nothing more. Anyway, I will try another location one day to see if this is a problem with all Keg's or just this Guildford location. Not impressed.
Went with a few friends for dinner. Very nice decor, very cosy. The staff there very friendly and knowledgeable. It has been a very long time since I was there last, and with my last visit I wasn't really impressed. It was time to try again. I ordered the Bleu Cheese Filet, prepared medium well. Came with a twice baked potato, and a tomato. The filet was cooked perfectly, the Bleu cheese was so tasty, ( I would of had that for dessert, lol), the potato was very tasty, went nicely with the meal. I will go back again, as it was an enjoyable meal.
Having previously dined at a number of Keg restaurants in the Lower Mainland, I must say that this one ranks as one of the best.
The food quality and quantity are outstanding. The portion size is in excess of that at the Burnaby Keg. The service is very attentive and efficient.
The ambiance is good with low lighting but not so low that you cannot see what you are eating as is the case at the Burnaby Keg.
Parking is a little tight as there was only one space left when I arrived.
Overall I would rate this as one of the very best Kegs and highly worthy of one's patronage.
-Food-
I ordered one of the steaks from the feature menu. Steak was cooked perfectly and very flavourful and tender; looked small at first glance but it was actually really thick and meaty! Bacon cream sauce and the mashed potatoes were great.
Skewered shrimp and grilled chicken were perfectly cooked as well, very nice texture but a tad too salty.
Billy Miner Pie, which is actually a giant 2.5in tall ice cream cake, was rich in flavour but very light and creamy, highly recommended!
-Service-
The wait was about 20 minutes for a table for two at around 6:30 on a Saturday. Our server was very attentive throughout the night. There was some spinach(?) stuck on the back of my menu, but he quickly replaced it, along with my dirtied napkin. Drinks were refilled/replaced on his own initiative, and we were checked on several times during the meal. The dessert was complimentary for my birthday and they did not even bother checking my ID!
Bonus points for being able to pay by credit/debit at your table using their little portable machines. Also, the busboy really put his bodyweight into cleaning the tables, and the booth seats too. The place is huge, but they seem to have a good employee-to-customer ratio, so we've never felt neglected.
-Ambiance-
The collective chatter of customers was a bit noisy, but not so much that it was annoying. Background music was energetic but soft enough so as to not be intrusive.
-Overall-
I've been this Keg several times before and this time was definitely the best experience. Overall I'd say they have consistently good food and service. Would be dining here again... : )
Food: Overall it was good. I had a steak & Tiger shrimp as well as a lobster gratinee. The appetizer was okay, too dependent on the cheese and oil, and the lobster taste yield. The steak was just enough, about the size of a computer mouse (and a bit bigger). The shrimp on the other hand was rather cold. The sauce that came with the shrimp was not good at all. It was sweet plumb with other seasonings, which didn't go well with the savory taste of the shrimps.
Service: We made a reservation, yet still waited for 5 minutes before we got seated. Our waitress was kind and tried to make small talk, however, that's not enough. Since we only saw her a maximum of 5 times throughout the whole meal. She came and took our order. Served our food. I had to hunt her down to get refill. She didn't offer to grind our pepper for us, which I actually liked to see. Never came by to ask how we're doing. The last time was picking up our plates and getting us the bill. After that we never saw her again, and we waited for a good 10 minutes until we decided to have some other server to bring out bill back to the cashier.
Value: Solid
Ambiance: Solid. Not too fancy. Dim, trying to create the "fine dinning" feel. Not too impressive, but okay for a date.
I had never been to the Keg so we decided to go there for our anniversary. I was shocked when I saw the menu prices. I had the Filet Mignon with a twice baked potato, my steak was awsome but tiny and my baked potato tasted like it was filled with that instant potato mix, I had the mushrooms neptune which wasn't that good, the portions were small. My husband ordered the Prime Rib (well done) and King Crab, the crab legs were a rip off, and he had to send back the prime rib to be cooked longer because it was too raw to eat. He didn't like any of his meal. The waitress was pretty knowledgable about steaks and friendly but it didn't make us feel any better when we got the bill and left still hungry. We'll never go back.
If you have been to one Keg, you have been to them all....NOT. I have eaten at the Langley, S. Surrey, G. Island. Victoria, Abbotsford, N.W and Vancouver Kegs and this one is the best IMHO.
The atmosphere is quieter than most and great serves as always in all Kegs but the big difference for me is the menu portions. They are larger here and they actually cut most of the fat off your Prime Rib before putting it on your plate :)
I will be back...
We went for my wife's birthday, party of 5. The guys had baseball steaks, the ladies had appies and a sirloin Oscar special. All the steaks were cooked perfectly as per request. Caesar salads were top notch - easily the best restaurant Caesar I know of. If I had to pick any two things to complain about, they are:
1. Seating - everyone knows they like to lure the alcohol lovers into the bar area prior to dinner to sell more drinks, but by creating this schism between diners and drinkers, the dining area is always full. To compensate the dining customers who are always left waiting are constantly offered tables in the bar. Not good, every person I saw waiting was offered a bar table and every one said no. We held out for a dining table and it took a long time, while the bar was only half full but too noisy. They should scrap the bar area and just be a restaurant.
2. Prices - No question that the steaks I make at home don't hold a candle to theirs. However, the portions leave a little to be desired when compared against the prices.
Our server provided perfect service - not too little, not too much. Servers can be a little overbearing, but this one was there when we needed her, and gone when we didn't. Excellent.
We will go there again!
