Worst sushi I ever had......

Today my family went to this restaurant for lunch. My better half and I had the AYCE lunch for $12.99 each. The kids were only toddlers and they have their "gold fishes: and snacks. Their high chair are too short for their high table, thus the kids are a foot below the table. The ambiance is nice if you were having the show for dinner. The sushi lunch selection was pitiful. There was only 22 items on the list and they had "white rice" as one of the dishes. Very limited selection. Actually embarrassing and insulting especially when you compare to other AYCE Japanese restaurants. Now when the food finally arrived it was tasteless and worst than the Japanese fast food take out. The teriyaki chicken tasted funny, better half was repulse by the taste. The prawn sushi was rubbery and tasteless. They even skimp on the wasabi and picked ginger. I do not believe that they are trying to pass themselves off as a sushi restaurant when clearly they are not. The only advantage they have is that there is only a few AYCE sushi restaurant in the Surrey area. I rather drive a hour with the kids screaming their heads off to go to Vancouver than ever eat here again.

This Japanese Teppanyaki house is brand new so I will give it a bit of a break. When you walk in, you are pleasantly surprised by the excellent interior decor. Unfortunately, the place is so small that if you sit in the room with the 2 grill sections, you're constantly bumping the person sitting behind you. You are greated by a semi-snotty hostess who doesn't even say hello, rather, "Do you have reservations?" - right off the bat. After informing her that we do, we were seated. Your next surprise (although not a good one) happens when you open the menu and discover the prices of the dinners. You, if you're like me, ignore the price and think to yourself, "It must be good if it costs this much! I've been to other teppanyaki places and they were great!" Alas, if you are basing your opinion on your experiences at other Teppanyaki spots, you will be grossly disappointed.

Our drinks came fast and the sake was DELISH! Best gekkeikan sake I've had in a while. Then comes the appetizer, a Japanese Pankake with oysters, onions and mushrooms. It was actually very delicious...kind of made me excited to try everything else. Our appy chef left and we were left to wait for the main course chef - for 20 minutes. Luckily the sake was a-flowing! Dinner...that's when everything went downhill for me. The chef was brand new and admitted that he's used to being a line cook and has never had to deal with customers face-to-face. We give him the "It's ok, you're doing great...we're easy going" line and he seems to relax. Veggies were under-cooked...maybe he was still a little nervous. Then comes the meat... the over priced, under-delivered meat. Sheesh. My fiancee and I split two dinners to get the best of both worlds: steak and chicken. Together, our food alone was over $95. Egad! Then our chef tossed the rice onto the grill... you're thinking "Steamed rice??" no, raw, un-cooked white rice. When your full meal was prepared and you started eating, you nearly chip your teeth on the rice and your meat was gamey and chewy. All in all, the food was lackluster at the very best...But wait, your final surprise it yet to come!

After dinner, you get your bill. On this bill you notice an automatic gratuity at the bottom of the bill. 15%... which I guess is good for the chefs becuase he wasn't going to get anymore than 10% from us. I think, next time, I'd get better value by taking a limo to Osaka's in Vancouver for the price I paid at Iron Grill. I hope that the errors made in food and chef-service can be attributed to how new the restaurant is, but I'm not going to pay to find out later on.
