Il Uk Jo serves Korean BBQ and Japanese sushi specializing in their all you can eat menu.
Went here with a friend for a belated birthday dinner. We ordered like kings and had a little of everything. The waitress was non-attentative and we had to flag our waitress down in order to get our order in. The food came out and it tasted all pretty good. Then again we were starving and at that time.....anything would have tasted good. Overall the presentation was good and the sushi and Korean bar-b-q was good. Now the service must have a change over, but it was non-existent. We had to several times hunt down a waitress to get our orderes out. The little bar-b-q at the center off our table was starting to smoke and we had to turn it off as it was getting bad, yet no one came to assist us. The booth next to us had the same problem but it was much worse as they had to re-locate to another booth as there was an "accident" at their previous booth. Overall I would come back for the food but not the service.
I came here a couple of months ago as they changed ownership but didn't write a review because it wasn't a great experience. Seeing the great reviews posted below, I felt I had to share my experience.
We ordered from the AYCE menu. The food was in general ok, but nothing spectacular and I wouldn't say that it's better than other AYCEs in Richmond at all. In fact, portions were small, the rolls were mediocre, and the biggest issue I had was that it wasn't fresh. Menu also had limited selections.
Service was ok, but there was a small language barrier as the server spoke very little English.
Tables were sticky and dishes were dirty.
Won't be back.
We come to Il Uk Jo several times a year especially if we've been busy and its later in the evening and we want to eat out. If you come after 9pm the all you can eat sushi is $13.99 and for that price is very good value. I believe they're open to 11pm every night.
The sushi and sashimi is usually pretty decent, especially for an all you can eat place. Ebi sunomono only comes with one or 2 little shrimp in it. Order two. All you can eat!
I'm not sure why a previous reviewer was trying to flag down the servers. Every table and tatami room has a doorbell on it and you push it when you want service. Every table and room has a number assigned to them and in the kitchen area is a board that lights up for that table when the doorbell is pressed and a server usually comes scurrying over, though if the restaurant is really busy you might have to push that doorbell again! But yes, absolutely I agree it would be really difficult to flag down a server because they're running around picking up orders and delivering food to the tables in the main restaurant plus there are larger rooms down the hall set up for big groups. Press that doorbell if you want service! That's what its there for!
When you're seated at a table they give you an order sheet and a pencil. Write down the number of how much you want beside the item you like. When you're finished writing down your order push the doorbell and a server will come to your table and pick up the sheet and take it back to the food preparation area. When the food is ready you can hear the sushi chef yell out "table 4" or whatever table it is and a server will dash over there to pick up the plates and bring them to the table. When you're done eating all the sushi on your plate, you ring that doorbell again and when the server shows up ask for another order form. Repeat as many times as needed.
Sometimes we don't get everything we ordered on the sheet. Everytime I go I'll order a California cone just to see whether or not I get it. Running about 75% of the time now!
They are really fast at preparing and delivering food. They have a large variety of food and its a good place to come to to try different dishes. Eat as much as you can for one price. They have a 90 minute time limit here. Usually we're in and out in 45 minutes and we probably place 2 orders.
Yes I've had better sushi at other Japanese restaurants. For the all you can eat price Il Uk Jo is a good choice if you come in hungry.
I've never really had trouble with service at this place, but then I always push that doorbell!
We've been here many many times, and recently they provide AYCE late night and night which is great value!
The service is outstanding, the servers are sweet and helpful. Their soups and noodles are fantastic. Sushi is good but rather small portioned. Their Robata is so-so, their Maki is good. Their gomae spinach is a bit tough. The Korean hot-pot is ok but they are generous with their meat portions. Can sit in common area or in cosy nooks, the decor is pine wood, so it has a comfortable ambience, expecially for larger groups, because this setting muffles the noise they tend to produce which might disturb the other diners. One should at least give this place a try.
We drove by this place yesterday and saw the banner. Japanese & Korean AYCE for $21. We thought we would give this place a try. Our expectations were very low...after all, most japanese/korean AYCE places are not good.
We walked in and noticed that the ambience and decor were okay. We then sat down and looked at the menu...it was the AYCE. $19.99 for weekday dinner and $20.99 for weekend dinner. Yes, selection was limited. We ordered a couple of the special rolls, the cones, motoyakis, and the korean bbq. The selection for the korean BBQ was only beef, chicken, pork, and beef ribs.
Then the food came...we were shocked. It was actually good. Unlike other AYCE places, the sushi rolls were of good quality. Not the best but definitely better than other AYCE places such as shabu sen or richmond sushi. The rice was very thin on the outside and the roll actually contained meat. I recommend the red dragon roll, very delicious. It's dynamite roll with small pieces of tuna on top and then dressed with mayonaisse and unagi sauce.
Then the Korean BBQ arrive. Just like the previous reviewer said, it's different. It's sort of soup based but the soup will actually reduce into a sauce and it's incredible. i recommend ordering the beef. The beef ribs arrived already cooked and they're good too but they limit the order to two per person.
The motoyaki is also quite good. You can choose between oyster, mussel, or fish. They only give small portions...half a mussel per order but it's AYCE so you can order as many as you want. It's very well done...I kind of like it...not the typical oyster motoyaki but it's different in a good way.
They also have tempura which is pretty good. The down side is, the prawn tempura is only available with the vegetable combo. So you get one prawn tempura combined with yam, onion and carrot tempura. If they can change this and let you order the prawn tempura only, then this place will be super.
So, not a crazy selection of food but pretty good quality for AYCE. Service is pretty good. They have a bell switch on every booth and if you need to call the waiter, they are only a push of a button away.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with this place and I'm kinda glad I gave it a try. Will definitely come with friends...Keep it up IL UK JO...funny name but good food.
One of our family's favorite restaurant!! They have the best Korean B.B.Q. and Japanese sushi!! Our family and I come here very often and we usually order the B.B.Q Combo which is good for around 4 people and we love it!!~~ You can order different kinds of B.B.Q and it also come with 2 plates of sushi!!~!~~! Food is always very tasty and sushi is very fresh too!!~ Service sometime can be slow when busy... but over all one of my favorite places to visit!!~~
Yeah if you tried their sushi your most likely to be disappointed... but you gotta try their Korean menu. Fortunate for me I went with a buddy of mine who is a Korean and he knew what to order for me. He ordered this dish which I don't remember the name. But it was some kind of deep fried chicken tasted sweet and bit spicy... but was the best kind of fried chicken I had. I think its called kam somthing somethign.. dont remember... and he also ordered this dish called japche which was a stired fried noodle in vegetables. This tasted great too... Service when I went wasn't too bad food came out fast and the waitress were polite... yeah and the smell I think it's the fish tank they have... not too sure...
This is a good AYCE. $21 for AYCE dinner. Korean menu is VERY limited though, no more than 5 items on the menu.
Although not authentic, since it's only half an oyster (heck, this is AYCE so I can order as many half-oysters as I can) and it's not in a shell, I still love their oyster motoyaki. Spicy tuna sashimi was good. The first order was a miss though, because it was still a little bit frozen. But hey, there's a grill in front of us so that was okay. All the rolls were good.
Service was just okay. Could be improved. There's a staffing problem, there's only a few of them working on a busy night. The waitress spilled out drinks twice. But that was alright. I'm guessing she's new and we're not that type of customer who would make a big deal out of it.
I am happy customer and will keep coming back.
It has been awhile since l was last here and l remember it being a decent place but after reading some of the negative reviews l was a bit saddened to read how it went down. l finally had the chance to check it out myself and was actually quite pleasantly surprised!
The sashimi was fresh the rolls perfect and the other foods like the chicken karaage, Ike karaage, spring rolls Etc was just absolutely awesome!
I'm not sure what some people expect but for an AYCE this place is great.
The interior maybe abit dated but the food is anything but.
The service was great as well, the servers were very kind and attentive.
Will definitely be coming back here very soon.
A group of 8 from work went out on a Friday night. The place was fairly busy. The ambiance was OK We sat in one of the private rooms with the tables with the gas burners in the middle. We all ordered the all you can eat. We ordered a little bit of everything and so glad we did. There were newbies and experienced Japaneese & korean diners in the crowd. We all thought the food was very good and good value too! The service was great as we just pushed the button when we needed something and she came right away. We decided we would definitely come back again for a good all you can eat meal with great service.
I recently attended this hard-to-pronounce restaurant with my friends last Monday, after not being at this restaurant for nearly a year.
My last experience here, the Korean BBQ aspect of dinging was quite poor, the sushi was terribly rolled and prepared and the eating experience overall was just very substandard and did not justify the dinner all you can eat price.
This time around there was a definite improvement in service (I would rate it a 7/10) with the manager being very involved in bringing out the food and drinks. The quality of sushi was fantastic and for those people who live in surrey, it is really difficult to find a solid sushi restaurant that prepares a variety of speciality rolls which are both reasonably priced and taste good. Lastly, I want to point to the quality of the Korean BBQ which I thought was really good since the meats tasted great and it did not feel like we were receiving micro waved food.
Overall, this restaurant has notably improved and I would recommend anyone who is dining here to get the $16.99 Deluxe dinner AYCE option because it is really worth it if you’re going 2 eat out, go big or go home.
Great food for the price - excellent value. Had lunch a few days ago. Two AYCE menus with a small price difference. The sushi are just the right size and not loaded with rice. The speciality sushis are really special for an AYCE place. Sashimi too. The BBQ is kinda special and the meats are not fatty as mentioned in a previous review. The meats are marinated in a sweetish marinade. I enjoyed the spicy meats. Will definitely go there again.
I came here last night with a party of 6. I have been here once before with my Boyfriend, so I knew what we were going into (we had a great experience the 2 of us).
Now remember- for the people who complain about not getting everything you wrote on your sheet, its all you can eat! Order it again, and again if you would like. We got 1 paper for all 6 which I thought may have been a bit confusing, but it was good as they put all of each thing ordered on one plate (To avoid having a million plates on the table). Again, its all you can eat so just keep ordering! Everything tasted great, the Teriyaki Chicken was the BEST thing, the chicken was cooked perfectly, cut into good size pieces, delicious. Everything tasted fresh, and for $20 a person, you cant go wrong. I think we ate our $20 in just tempura!
The service was great, I didn't notice any language barrier with server (I guess it depends on who you get as a server), the owner brought us our dishes many times and was very nice, happy and appreciative towards us. Compared to a couple AYCE I have been to in Richmond, I found their rolls to taste dry as if they were sitting out, where as everything here at IL UK JO tasted fresh and delicious. Their California Roll was stuffed so huge I was nearly full from just eating them! We didn't do the Korean BBQ this time, but we did last time and it was also delicious.
Overall, Food was delicious, the atmosphere was good, I can see a few small things for improvment as far as the booths etc but you don't go there to buy the decor, you go there for the food. As long as it wasnt dirty (which I didn't notice) then you are good to go! I was concerned with having a larger group but it wasnt a problem at all. I recommend this place for AYCE Sushi!
I went here with bunch of my friend last week!! I gotta say I was pretty impressed with their all you can eat. I usually goto richmond for All you can eat but after my visit to this resturant there no more reason too... The food tasted great... they had a really good oyster motoyaki and mussel diffrent then what I'm used. Different as in Good different.
I tried their lunch which was i think around $12. They had korean bbq as well for their lunch all you can eat. kinda like Shabusen in vancouer an all you can eat sushi which i used to goto...
I went there yesterday for valentines with my boyfriend. It was really busy... It was my first time but my boyfriend has been to this restaurant many times before... And he ordered this combo menu for two which had different kinds of B.B.Q and some sushi. And I though it was excellent!! There sushi was really fresh and there B.B.Q was also really tasty!!
Service on the other hand wasn't as good but I understand it since it was valentines day yesterday and other restaurants would have been the same... Overall I really liked this restaurant and definitely Ill ask my boyfriend to take me there again!!
If you are looking for sushi in a Korean restaurant, you will have very high chances to be disappointed. However, knowing the owner and server are Korean, we tried the classic Korean manu and it was fine.
Service? Well... if you don't want your server to bother you for 30 min, this is the place to go. I don't know if I will ever try their sushi but for sure I will go back for their noodle again.
Let me preface this (since we've added the first review and feel a little guilty that it's bad) review by saying we only tried the sushi - the Korean BBQ may be outstanding (but we won't be back to find out).
Again, stopped in just becasue it was close to home, the first impression was that the place smells bad. Note sure how else to describe it, but our first reaction was that we should have left and went somewhere else. Being new to the area we didn't know where to go so decided to stay - bad choice. When it comes to sushi, rule #1 must be - trust your nose.
I couldn't finish my plate of sashimi, tough, slimy fishy - honestly. Not good.
My grilfriend had frozen tuna and salmon sushi - not slightly not slightly frozen, but downright frozen in the middle. When the waitress came by we requested she take it back as it was unaccaptable - she tried to convince us otherwise and inform us that sushi is suppossed to be frozen! Like a sushi-sicle!?!?!
After a bit if presuasion they took the frozen sushi from our bill.
Maybe it was just a bad night for them? maybe the Korean BBQ is great?
My husband and I went to the Il Uk Jo tonight and had a terrible experience. The place is dirty, and needs a thorough cleaning and overhaul. The rooms you sit in are dirty, falling apart and very cramped. We were asked if we wanted drinks. My husband had hot sake, I asked for a wine list and the waitress couldn't understand English so another waitress came over and didn't do much better when I asked what kind of wine they had as all they had was California white, which she didn't understand that I wanted the name of the wine. Frustration ensued so I ordered a beer. She brought the beer. Bottle only. I asked for a glass and she brought me a juice glass to drink a beer out of. I asked for a beer glass, but again no response and no glass. We then ordered from the menu, with no help and this business of writing on a piece of paper what you want and then getting it and then having to order again was very frustrating as they never explained if you wanted 4 tempura prawns you have to put 4 as if you put 1 you only get 1 prawn. The service was so slow, the waitress never asked how the food was and never explained about a bell to get them to come over. We were so frustrated and so displeased that we will not return. $20.00 for all you can eat is not a bad price, but the food was not deserving of $20.00 as we were at a loss of what to order. I did not tip and will not return. Don't go if you want good service and a clean enjoyable restaurant.
Went for dinner here, my boyfriend had already eaten but I was staving, I ordered the all you can eat while he watched me eat. When the bill came they charged us for 2 meals, they said whether he ate or not he sat at the table and would be charged as if he did eat. There were things I ordered that were never served to me and I would have to say the sushi was the worst I have ever eaten aside from grocery store sushi. The motoyaki was good. I would never in a million years recommend this restaurant to anyone.
I've went to this place many times and what was I thinking?
I gave them way too many chances. The food was terrible and prices were too high. For 2 people, after ordering 3 dishes(1 black bean noodle 1 spicy seafood soup with noodles and 1 deep fried pork) it came out to be around 37 dollars. The kimchi they served us had a dead housefly in it and when I told them it has a dead fly, the waitress gave us another dish but that one smelled really gross--it tasted very sour which means it was way too old. After all the bunch of terribleness, I have to admit the sweet and sour deep fried pork dish was delicious. In terms of service, the waitress never refilled our tea cups unless I asked them to. The food came out way too slow(about half an 20min wait).
I have been fooled enough times to NEVER return to this place ever again.
