Hanako is a small, family run sushi joint in the Guildford area.
Thanks to the other positive reviews I decided to visit this place. I've never had smoked tuna before so decided to have that salad as my main. The tuna may have been red tuna and it was quite meaty with a rare middle and just seared on the outside, it wasn't really smoked but it was still good. There was a lot of tuna in the dish six large slices. The salad greens with crunch from sunflower seeds went well with the tuna. I also ordered a few nigiri and while the prices are a bit high the nigiri were also big enough for two-bites. Overall I was satisfied with this place. The menu is quite small and focussed and they have a daily fresh sheet of specials. It's better to come here in a group though of at least four to six people so you can sample more dishes. This place is good if you haven't had izakaya but I prefer the smaller tasting portions of izakaya places like Guu. I would return here for the sushi but not for cooked items. Having lots of the same dish is just boring.
Wow. I keep passing by this place and finally decided to go in after my favorite sushi place declined in quality and quantity.
It's a very small place and packed for good reason. The sashimi was freshest I've had in a long time especially in Surrey. Sashimi quality is comparable to higher priced places like Kiyo in Richmond. My bf and I had the assorted sashimi, beef tataki, spider roll and hanako roll and all were fantastic.
Bonus: get in early and sit at the sushi bar -- watching the sushi chef is a treat on its own!
I'll definitely be back -- looks like I've found a new favourite for sure!
We went for lunch today, to try this place based on reviews here. It IS very small, and very friendly...
When we walked in, I was greeted with a "Oh, it's YOU...!!" from a server who had been a regular at Tokachi. Chika-san is VERY efficient, VERY friendly, and makes you feel like a personal friend.
We both ordered sushi and sashimi bento. Everything was impeccably fresh, most enjoyable.
Service was prompt and unobtrusive. Chika-san even remembered that my hubby needs a fork...!
Great place. We'll be back for dinner, for sure.
I don't venture to Surrey very often so when I had to find a place for a good, quick dinner, I went online. Reviews of this place were good so we stopped in. Within 20 minutes the place went from opening up to completely full. The service is friendly and quick but it's the food where they shine..top quality. Attention to details. The sushi was fresh and beautiful works of art. Sushi prices are average. The menu has a good selection of the usual dishes. I'll have to go back to try the cooked food. The place is small with only 6-7 tables for about 20 diners and a sushi bar for another 7 or so. Lots of free parking.
This small, modestly-furnished sushi joint isn't going to blow you away with cheap prices or huge portions, but the service is very pleasant and attentive (despite that the place was quite busy!) and the sushi is fresh and delicious. The selection isn't large... but they've got all the key staples, from 10 or so rolls to choose from, 6 or so sashimi options, udon and tempura, among other things. The sashimi is extremely fresh and the tempura is crispy to perfection.
The rolls themselves are quite small. They're about $4 each and could definitely pack more bang for their buck, but they make up for it in terms of quality. I can't really recommend anywhere else in the Guildford area over this place... Tengoku across the road has great service and atmosphere, but it doesn't come anywhere close to the level of food quality. Try it out!
in the corner of a strip mall off 152 Street near the Empire Theatre is Hanako. There are two other sushi restaurants within 100 yards or so of this one.
We ate there Friday night about 6:30PM, with the restaurant empty. Within 15 minutes, it was near full.
Service is very proficent. The menu is quite plain (no photos of the food here) but they did have I guess you could call it a fresh sheet, which was hand written & photo - copied, offering some much more expensive items.
While I do like sushi, I must confess to not being an expert when I get away from the standard fare. So I enquired as to the main ingredients in certain rolls I was not familiar with. The server, while very polite and patient, did have a language issue (or I guess more correctly I should say I did) so I did not pursue this for very long. Decided to stay with what I knew, as it was my first visit.
Prices are in line with other sushi places in Surrey, although I found the roll portions smaller. The Dynamite roll my wife had she reported as wonderful & ordered another at the end of the meal. The bonelss chicken karaage, while tasty, was a little on the fatty side.
A miso soup, 4 rolls, gyozi & the chicken came to $29 incl tax. We were more than full and could have passed on the final roll. That is the problem with sushi, the rice & soya can sneak up on you.
Overall, a pleasant experience and I would recommend this spot.
Went here for lunch a while ago, and really liked the sushi here.
I forgot what I had exactly, but the tempura was very crunchy here, and sashimi very fresh. Sometimes I think some restaurants in Surrey are so much better than the ones in Vancouver because their quality is so much better with a cheaper price.
The service was very prompt and friendly. I saw the artwork on the way to the washroom and thought it was cute. But it is a very small restaurant, not really for parties, but just for a lunch with a few friends.
A friend brought me to this little gem in Surrey.
I am not too adventurous when it comes to sashimi. I usually stick to salmon and hamachi. But they did not have hamachi that day, and the server suggested an alternative, hamachi's relative, I was told. I couldn't remember the name, but it is very fresh and very good.
For the main, I had the King Crab salad. The salad was wonderful with an abundance of king crab leg. The dressing complemented the crab and salad very well too.
Service: The server was very friendly and helpful. There was a handwritten menu, on top of the regular menu, and it was not in English. The server patiently explained each item to us. I had trouble understanding her and ended up pointing to the food on the next table.
Ambiance: It is a family-run restaurant. Not much of an ambiance. The owner's daughter's artwork can be seen hanging on the wall on the way to the washroom.
Return? Yes, defintely. Need to find Hamachi's relative's name.
I love eating here for lunch or dinner. The sushi is so fresh, so tasty, so perfectly sized. Never too much rice, always delicious, and the service is outstanding. The servers are very sweet ladies and are extremely friendly and efficient.
I love the sushi bar with its dark laquered wood and fine details. It was obviously a labour of love to create it. The rest of the restaurant is very cute. There are paper cutouts of different sushi and sashimi rolls on the walls, which makes me smile.
For those people who have been to Japan, you will know Hanako is as close to being in Japan as possible. You can tell by the regular customers that come here. Many are Japanese people who won't eat any where else. That tells you something.I've eaten here many times, and it's always awesome! It's better than the over priced restaurants downtown! Little details, like how the sushi chef cuts little slices across the top of the sushi so when you dip it in the soy sauce (fish side down into the sauce) it holds the sauce, rather than running all off. This is only done by the BEST sushi chefs in Japan! If you love authentic and quality Japanese food, come here!
I will not try any other place for Sushi. My parents have tried all of these highly recommended sushi restaurants all over town (Richmond, Vancouver) and they also claim that nothing compares. I tell people that this is the best sushi i've ever tried but they don't believe me b/c it's in Surrey. Hey, it's their loss that they won't venture into Surrey from the Van and I'm hoping they don't come b/c I might not be able to get a seat when it's busy! It's Surrey's best kept secret.
I highly recommend their crab salad, salmon salad, tuna salad, and chirashi (sashimi, scallops...etc. on rice with tabiko). When around for lunch-their lunch boxes are great (sushi and sashimi). Whenever I eat sushi i go there. I'm highly picky when it comes to food especially sushi. Their food is ALWAYS fresh.
Prices are a tad higher than other sushi spots, but their quality surpasses any other places.
Unlike my past visits to this what once WAS my favourite restaurant, after this recent last visit, it had completely changed my mind and I feel the need to re-evaluate it again.
The food is still standard as it was back then, in terms of flavour, BUT in terms of proportion, it had definitely went from a size 8 to a size 2. I ordered the sushi set lunch, as I have been in the past, thinking it would fill me up, just like in the past. This time however, to my surprise, when my meal came, I can tell just by looking that the proportions had shrunk drastically. By the end, me and my friend had to order more food just to not feel hungry, yes not hungry, I don't even hope to get full in this restaurant anymore.
The service is good and solid, like what you'd expect from any mediocre restaurant.
This was the part which I felt the need to re-evaluate this restaurant. I understand cost of living raises, so it's justifiable when restaurant raise their prices as well. This last time however, the prices were raised a bit too much! On average, I think the owner raised the prices of all menu items by 20% ~ 30%. Yet the proportions were shrinking at the same rate! To me, I think that's a bit too greedy. or getting more stingy.
With prices like that, I'd expect a better dining environment, yet it never changes, still the same few pieces of fake nigiri sushi on the side wall, wood tables and chair.
In the end, I don't think I'll go back to this restaurant anymore. It sad to cross it off of my list of favourites, but I have to let it go. Luckily though, I've found a new favourite, which doesn't charge ridiculous prices and has better quality sushi!
After three visits I'm continually impressed by the taste, quality and freshness of the sushi and sashimi. All the selections I've tried are exceptional.
Downside is that portions are a little on the small size and prices a little high.
I can eat average fish at most of the restaurants in Vancouver. But when you get a craving for really fresh, succulent sushi, this is a great choice. I order chirashi and there was so much, I couldn't finish. Thick cuts of salmon, tuna, ebi and tako. Mounds of chopped scallop and tobiko. Perfect rice. Totally satisfied my craving. Attentive service. Will be back.
This places serves the BEST japanese food - ever - and this is from a Jap cuisine veteran who eats sushi 3 times a week at various places (i.e. Shijo & Shiro in Van, Guu...etc).
The sushi is simply incredible. The owner/chef even checks and smells the fish before he cuts them up to ensure they are fresh enough.
All the raw fish here is exceptionally fresh, with reasonable prices considering its quality. They have lots of exotic / rare fish available for sashimi as well.
The uni sushi - which is only available in season b/c the owner told me they don't taste as good frozen when they were made available during off-season - is so fresh, so sweet, it's unbelievable! The owner plucks pieces of uni meat from whole, FRESH UNI to make the sushis!
No rice overload here - the owner wouldn't want to stuff you w/ rice.
My favorite items - 1) crab salad (made with real crab meat) $12.95 i think
2) toro sushi - unbelievably fatty and fresh, request them torched to have their surfaces slightly torched w/ a sprinkle of lemon juice $1.75 each
3) spicy tuna roll $3.95 or spicy tuna don ($12.95). They make their own spicy sauce - none of that vietnamese chili sauce from a plastic container. The hot sauces has a sesame after taste to it - simply incredible!
No, I don't own the place nor do I work there...but this place is so good it's addictive! I know people who long to drive all the way from the PNE area to come here.
Restaurant is closed on Mondays and open for lunch + dinner from Tues - Sun.
first time me n my girl went there everything was great n the food there was fresh... it was a very delicious experience especially the live prawns for 3.95 per one... a week later we came back we order the same prawns for the same price but its taste totally different cause its now live it frozen n we complain to the manager n she didnt do nothing about it... very disappointment it was n the roll look very ugly.... everything was so expensive for frozen food...we will never come back again
There is a type of food that you eat just to fill up and forget about it after, and then there's another type that explodes your mind and awakens your soul. Hanako is the latter. Without any condiments, the fish by itself is enough to take you for a dive in the ocean. You can appreciate deeply the gifts of earth as the food is simply prepared so fresh and sincere that it reminds you the of all the good things in life. I here thank Hanako for this experience and strongly recommend anyone who haven't been to this place to give it a try. The musts are: Crab Salad, Smoked Tuna Salad, Torched Toro Nigiri and Hamachi Sashimi. Simply AMAZING.
We hesitated to go to Hanako because of some of the reviews here. More expensive? Yes. Less quantity? Not really. Quality? About the same.
I don't know who wrote the price range ($30-45), it's too high. Unless you eat fancy or with a few other people.
We ordered smoked tuna salad, lunch boxes, Chirashi. the quantity was the same as we came here more than 6 months ago. Though the prices have gone up by around 15%, the quality was still good, and the quality is still better than most of the sushi restaurants in Surrey. They use ceramic plates and containers and not plastic which feels safer.
Would go there again, but there are better choices outside Surrey.
I have been a customer at this restaurant for a few years now and it is one of the place I keep coming back regardless where I move around the town. They do not have a big long menu like you will find in most of the other common Japanese restaurants, but if you really know what you are eating then you know what to order. for those who only touch cooked food, I don't recommend that you come visit this place, because you will be happier going to some all-you-can-eat sushi places. This place has the best raw seafood special you can find according to different seasons. Their special daily menu is always changing. I like it very much because simply you get to try something new most of the time.
Their service is nice and friendly, as it has a small team working together to manage a small place that will likely to satisfy most of the customers.
Pricing is consider on the high side if you think it's located in Surrey. However, if you compare the quality and portion of food you get to other restaurants in Vancouver, you will find it's very fair.
I find it unfair to see some other people think it's nothing special about them. If your typical favourite Japanese food is California roll, tempura, and some fried noodle, do not bother coming because you will be in a wrong place. And if you are someone who appreciate something special and fresh all the time, this is one place will make you extremely happy. It is very important to be creative and brave to enjoy something you never try and most of the time you will find yourself making the best decisions when it comes to great food.
After the mostly positive reviews, hubby and I decided to get take out tonight-the quality of the sushi is wonderful! Everything was fresh and very flavourful. We ordered cali roll, tekka maki, salmon maki, an ebi sunomono salad, prawn tempura and miso. We'll have to try the chirashi next time...
