If you have a lot of mouths to feed or need a party tray and are in the area this is a great choice. The prices here are very good and comparable to Samurai Sushi/Banzai Sushi. At first glance this place looks iffy but the food is solid. The rolls are huge. I only have the cooked rolls here as I usually share with people who don't like the raw stuff. I like that their smoked salmon & shrimp roll includes cucumber and avocado. While there is a lot of rice on these rolls making them big they also have quite a bit of filling. It's a good ratio. Their yam tempura roll was good as well. I liked the tamago nigiri, again the rice given underneath the nigiri was big so this was a two-bite piece. Sushi is a funny thing, sometimes you crave the best like what's on offer at Tokachi, that place is amazing for the raw stuff. Other times when I just want sushi but not neccessarily the raw expensive stuff this place fits the bill. Their rice does have the vinegar taste but is almost mushy. I think they may just use regular rice as sushi rice tends to be firmer and a bit stickier. Regardless the sushi still tastes good and I will return to try other rolls. Lately I've been trying to have only sockeye salmon sushi so I will pass on the raw stuff on offer at this place. But the cooked rolls are decent here and an amazing value!
I have been going to this place for about 6 months now, as it is close to my work. It's just a small hole in the wall in a strip mall accross from Guildford Mall in Surrey. The sushi there is quite good. The California rolls are $2.95 for 6 very large pieces and the dynamite roll is only $3.50 and very large and tasty too. Salmon nigiri is $.99 per piece and you get a fairly large piece of fresh salmon.
Service is okay, the waitress doesn't really speak english that well (owned by Vietnamese), but she is friendly.
Have ordered a take out party tray there for $20 and there was enough food to feed 3 adults until we were stuffed and had lots of leftovers the next day.
I would give this place a try, if you're in that area.
I order there quit often, always order party tray if I take out, not being too critical but being honest to share some of my thoughts. cuz I can't say I won't ever order again, but I would definitly only order once in a very long time unless they change a bit.
For the first time, I'm like everyone, impressed by the portion and the BIG size rolls and everthing.
however, after few times ordering, comparing to a few other sushi restaurant, I think they might put a bit too much MSG in there food. They did say they put MSG, and I know many Sushi places put some, but in comparrison, they put way too much
Its a good price over all, but healthler concern? hmmm....I did ask the erver to put it less, but I can't, since she said most of the mix is premade.
Me and some gfs ended up here getting takeout tonight and I spent 17.50 on sushi, kinda mad at myself at first for spending that much. I got Salmon sashimi, cali, dyna, and alaska rolls so nothing out of the ordinary. I opened my take out boxes (yes plural) and the portions were HUGE!!!! I can eat alot (I have been cut off from ayce sushi and ribs) and I only finished half. Allthough the rolls are too big (how big are the chefs mouths?!), the salmon not the freshest, it is definately a good deal. Next time I'll get a platter with one of my guy friends to tackle (some really good $22 lookin ones). Wouldnt eat in though, the service seemed snotty, and the insides shabby. Didn`t seem to have beer or wine either, and I really enjoy a dry white wine with my sushi so its a must for eat in.
*****Most of all, if you like sashimi but hate the high prices or stupid portions it takes to get just salmon or another kind, go here!!! Perfect size of sashimi for 5.50, could get that and a small roll and be more than full)
I've been going to this place for a few years. It's the perfect balance between value and portion size. Quality is average. Take out is always a good deal. If you dine in, be prepared for horrible service. This place is renowned for terrible service. I have no idea why they can't hire decent people to work here. It's Vietnamese run, but the sushi chef is a really nice guy and does a good job. So I put up with the bad, just because it is a really good deal. If I want authentic sushi with great service, then I head down the street to Hanako. The cooked food here is ok as well. Really the only sad part is the service, and it's a bit dirty. It's better than Tengoku though, also down the street.
If you are looking for SIZE and QUANTITY similar to Samurai Sushi in Van, this is it. The owners are relatives. Menu and prices are identical and the same goes for size and quantity. Salmon sushi are so big I cut them into two pieces. Same goes for the sashimi. Service is horrible on every occasion. The lady behind the counter and telephone is impatient and rude at times. The sushi chefs are a little better. At least they crack a smile when you enter the restaurant. This place is busy due to the lack of choice of quality sushi house in the Guildford area. Call ahead your oder just don't expect good service. Give it a try if you are in a mood for big gigantic sushi.
My girlfriend and I have probably ordered from this place 15 or 20 times now - The main reason being that the value for your money at Guildford Sushi is probably the best I've ever seen for a sushi place. Granted, they bulk up their rolls quite a bit with extra rice, but the other ingredients are also there in large amounts.
We usually order the party tray A, which for 20 bucks is a large combination of nigiri with a LOT of rolls. We can almost never polish off the whole thing. For those who have never been, they have a "house roll" which is something that you have to hollow out piece by piece....no way you're going to eat it in one bite. Probably three or four is more realistic. You get one of those, an Alaska roll, California roll, Tuna roll, Salmon roll, and 2 pcs of salmon, tuna and ebi......that's a LOT of food for 20 bucks. The nigiri has SLABS of fish on them....they are massive, and in fact my girlfriend's main complaint is that the nigiri is way too big.
Enough about the combo.....the sushi is definitely mediocre. It has only been below par a few times, and those times it was usually the tuna that was a bit off. The jumbo nigiri is one negative, although admittedly you are getting a lot of fish. Nigiri is meant to be one bite, however, and they are just far too large. Cutting the price by 25% and using half the fish on each piece would save them money and probably be preferred by the customers.....the rolls are thick with rice, again, nice if you want to fill up, but it makes almost all the roll pieces too large to eat in one bite, resulting in the dreaded fall-aparty roll. The rolls are tasty though, and the avocado roll in particular is really good and generously stuffed with avocado.
As far as service goes, they're always very friendly - In particular one of the chefs is a really friendly guy, always greeting you and thanking you. Never seen the guy frown.
Ambiance? It's a pretty standard little sushi place, nothing special, nothing bad......
There's not a lot of choice in Guildford for sushi, and this place happens to be very close by. It's definitely a place that will continue to get our business, more so for the value and service than quality. It does walk a fine line though, and if the quality was ever to decline even just a bit, this place might turn into one to pass on.
I LOVE sushi, and this is my go-to place for years. I crave their Dynamite Roll and Salmon every day hahah!
I haven't noticed any problem with the service, just one time they got mad because they thought I ordered Tuna with my takeout, but I never order Tuna from them, so that's the only confusing incident I had with them. I get excited every time I see my favorite chef, he is always so cheerful.
They've bumped up their prices a bit, but even now it's still REALLY cheap. Though I must say the consistency in taste is more off these days, I hope they pick it back up again.
It's not the most attractive place... it's small and looks like it won't be good at all. The service is okay, servers don't really know how to speak english....
BUT! the food is amazing. Probably the best in the area. The portions are huge and you get your money's worth. Ordering sashimi at any other place will give you lame little slices, but here they don't hold back! Their chopped scallop rolls are the best I've ever had!!
This has officially been my favourite place to go to in Surrey when I'm in the area. Low price for good food! They just need a nicer place/new servers (who know good english) :)
It's a decent sushi restaurant if you're around the area and looking for a quick place to eat. However, if you're looking for a unique experience, don't bother. I tried the California roll as a take-out on one occasion ($2.95). Recently, I tried the chicken teriyaki don which was only okay ($6.95). I didn't find it as appetizing as other don I had in the past at other restaurants.
At first glance, Guildford Sushi House appears to be just another of many sushi eateries. However, once you step in the door you are greeted warmly by the server who is working and the Sushi Chef standing behind the bar. The Sushi chef will happily strike up a conversation with you if you are sitting at the bar. And he always quality checks you once you have received your meal to ensure you are satisfied. My meal has always arrived promptly and the proportions are extremely large. Plus, the prices are more affordable than average. The only thing lacking is the fact that there is a bit of a language barrier with the server. However, that is a small price to pay for such kind service, great food and an all-around great sushi experience!
I noticed someone being wowed by the size of their rolls. The rolls might be big, but the quality just isn't there. I love sushi and have tried 100s of sushi places over the years to know good sushi from bad. At Guildford Sushi it doesn't seem to matter if you are eating tuna or salmon or one of the fancier looking rolls as it all seems to taste the same. Even if I could put up with just barely OK sushi, I will not put up with bad attitude and that is my next point.
The service is very poor not only due to the very evident language barrier, but also there is no courtesy from the woman who runs it. I was bluntly told that if I don’t like something that it was totally OK and that I didn’t have to come back and/or order from them again. Well in my books if the owner of the restaurant gives you that kind of an attitude, it is a place to avoid and spread the word, because there are hundreds of other restaurants wanting to get your business just around the corner.
stopped in here because it was close to home and we were hungry (until we found dinehere.ca we've been trying restaraunts without any previous info/reviews).
Overall the food, serve were good - prices make this place worth the visit if you live close by.
I have been going to this restaurant for over a year now and have never had sushi like this before. The rolls are absolutely huge, so large that most people need to take 2 or 3 bites for one single piece. Although the service is somewhat lacking, and the waitress doesn't speak english well at all, the chef is always willing to chat while he makes your food and is quite a nice guy.
If you are in the area, definitely worth eating at this small sushi restaurant, located directly behind tim hortons, across from the guildford mall on 152nd street in guildford.
I went there a while back and had the best time when i sat at the sushi bar with the younger sushi chef. The older one is not as fun and his skills is not as good. But the sushi and sashimi is super fresh and huge. I think i had the best chopped scallop cone i ever had in my life. He chopped the scallop in front of me and mixed in all the sauce and tobiko. Super fresh.... He cut the salmon sashimi into roses shape. It's taste even better then the regular shape sashimi. I just told him make a plate of sashimi and it was honestly the best i ever had in my life. Presentation was amazing and i walked out with only a $20 bill. If i can find out when that guy works there i only go back when he's there... yes.. sushi is best eaten on the spot when it's fresh..
They have the normal individually priced meals along with party trays (take outs) for $ 20-45.
"Eat-in Experience" ----
Food - the shrimp tempura/ other tempura SUCKED! The flour on the shrimp was so thick! But the salmon/tuna sushi were decent for the price. Individual meals were around $ 7-15 each. The size of the food were decent, not too small or big. There are side orders for other food also.
Service - the waitress speak somewhat understandable English. VERY SLOW in giving new customers tea (we had to ask for tea after sitting down). And slow in refilling tea. Food arrived in decent time after ordering. The waitress' service IMO did not warrant my tips to her. I rather do 'take-out'.
Location/Restaurant - good location if live in or around Surrey. plenty of parking. Have a sushi bar (the sushi person putting together the raw food) on the side with 5-10 tables through out the restaurant room. Tables were abit small.
"Take-out Experience (Party Tray)" ---
Call 1 day in advance get 10% off, 2 hrs in advance get 5% off.
have 2 versions of the $ 20 tray: one have more # of pieces of roll (mainly with rolls, almost no salmon/tuna); the other tray has less number of sushi/rolls (but with salmon, tuna, shrimp etc)
Food: good size party trays and different kind of trays (4) to choose from (feeding 2-8 people). food is decent for the value. Always on time for pick up.
Very friendly, great staff. Huge portions, great value.
I would date the long haired waitress in a second.
I purchase sushi here at least once a week.
It's for the sushi but the waitress is hot.
I have never had portions so large, one mouthful is not enough. This also proves to be pretty troubling as sushi tends to break up on you if you can't throw it back in one bite.
i love it here. i usually order take out and it always turns out well. the portions are huge and the sushi taste great. they also have platters and so on. there is quite a variety and all the ingredients are fresh. you can watch them make your order here too. this is place i pick for sushi when im in the guildford area. this is definitely a place to try.
