At Fresgo Inn Restaurant and Bakery, we pride ourselves in creating a unique cafeteria style dining experience. Though our ambience is a little old school, the portions are huge, the price right and we're one of the few places in BC that still bake every hamburger, sub, hot dog bun and loaf of bread used for our meals fresh every single day.
With something on the menu to suite everyone, we have senior and kids specials daily. And we've just added Pizza to the menu!
Huge portions of reasonably good food served in a cafeteria atmosphere. This isn't fine dining or anything close to it, but a place to get fed. If you come with that expectation, its not bad at all, and depending on when you come other customers can provide a Felliniesque atmosphere for your entertainment.
I first experienced the Fresgo Inn many years ago when it had a West End location. Experience is an apt word because few other restaurants serve such enormous portions for such a reasonable price. After moving to Surrey a few years ago I was pleased to find it had a location there with the same approach. The quality and flavour varies from dish to dish. The burgers are huge but other than that not outstanding, but if you're a mushroom lover you must try the mushroom burger at least once. Fries are tasty. The spaghetti and meat balls is one of my favourites, though I can only eat half of what they serve!. The snitzel (sp?)is tasty too. The cesar salad has plenty of garlic. Salmon is surprisingly good - flakey and not overcooked. Mixed vegetables tend to be overcooked though, and the battered fish is too greasy for my taste. For lighter fare try the chicken cesar of chefs salad.
People may have mixed opinions of the Fresgo Inn, but it is very popular. That speaks volumes.
The burgers and fries are a good price for the amount, however the burgers are not that tasty. Overall the food is mediocre as I'm reminded everytime I go there. I'll still go there once a year or so, but that is about as much as I can take.
Seriously though, if you are hungry or hung-over this is the place for you. What you've heard is true.....the portions are disgustingly huge! I ordered a mushroom burger, they must have poured the shrooms on with a dump truck. It is a self serve outfit so no tipping required. Same price as McDonalds but wayyyy more grub
This place has changed. I used to come here 10-15 years ago and the food was not bad and it was a great bang for the buck. I came back recently and it was beyond horrible... Will never be back here again that's for sure.
Food tasted like cardboard full of grease.
The lady and the man working at the till were completely rude.
For the price, you do get a good portion of food.
This place hasn't remodeled or changed from as long as I can remember. Very old looking
wide variety but all meals are very very bland. been there many times and tried just about everything...kinda forced to go there on a regular basis due to group meetings held there often. i have never ate a delicious meal there ever and infact i have yet to eat a meal i even enjoyed. all my friends i have taken there never wanna go back saying the food sucks so i know it's not just me. portions use to be huge but not anymore (probably due to the economy) and there recent price increases and reduced quantities and now even more reduced quality make it very hard to dine there. atmosphere is poorly dated from the 70's or 80's and now very obviously worn out shabby looking and hardly spic and span, going into washrooms will turn you off eating. order takers vary from no personality to no knowledge as there mostly young and non-dedicated here today gone tomorrow types. cooks are a mixed bag with a hit and miss for too over cooked or dried out. i have read many complaints about bad food and it's true if it tastes odd do not eat it, ask for a different item all together as alot of the food is made in large batches and sits.
I live not too far away from Fresgo's and have been there many times since I was younger. It is not a high class or "great" restaurant by any means, but it is one of my favorite "dives". Food portions are HUGE and if you can finish a full meal, I would be very surprised. I almost always get the Double Bacon Cheeseburger & Montreal Style poutine. Quick route to a heart attack, but damn it is good!
Food can really be hit or miss. Sometimes the burgers come out great and fresh, other times it seems like they have been on the grill all day. (They haven't. You can see them cook your burger if you really want to watch.) Maybe a result of all the younger staff they seem to hire.
One caution though, our family has gotten sick from the food at this restaurant. The Chicken Ceaser Salad dressing must have gone bad. It tasted fine, but the next day we all woke up sick. Haven't been back since, but I've been craving their Chowder.
I have been to Fresgos many many times, and every time, I am simply amazed! My sister once ordered a Chef Salad there, but got the wrong dressing but did not notice it until it was alrady on the salad, so she brought it back. They made a completely new one, two times the size, and apologized a lot! I really do say that it is worth going to.
dont go here!!! i ordered food and there was a hair in it, i returned it and asked for a new one and low and behold, the second dish had the exact same piece of hair!!! its just gross. i think they just left it in the kitchen, mixed around a bit and gave it back to. i really wanted to return it again but was too afraid of what they might do with it next. i left the restaurant hungry. my friends dish was not good either. he ordered the fried chicken and it was so dry. he said it tasted old, like probably from the day before and they just refried it. please do not go here. this place needs to be shut down. it just disgust me.
I,ve been eating here for over 25 years. And it,s the only Family Restaurant that i know of or have been to that has it,s own Bakery (Large) and Prep. Kitchen where they make their own soups, salads, gravy, hamburger patties and so on. Knowing too that the owner is a chef makes me trust what i eat there. The portions are outstanding! I also like how you can change your order to what you like.(no fries, mashed potatoes instead) Another unique thing also is there are no waitresses. You pay first, they cook your order, call your number ,you get it and enjoy your meal! NO TIP! It,s worth the foot work.
You go to Fresgo's for the food-not ambiance, so get past that one right away. Its' dinner style, and about the 'fast' food at great value. The mushroom burger is AMAZING and massive. I love their ceaser salad as I am a big fan of garlic and hate those wimpy ceaser salads with watered down dressing and no flavor that most restaurants give you!
Their breads are also great and their cakes, pies, pastries are a slice of heaven so to speak!
I can remember as kid pulling up to Fresgo Inn. I've been going to this place for over twenty years and it hasn't changed one bit. The portions are huge!! I have only ever met two people who could eat everything on their plates!! I hope they keep the one in Surrey open as they have closed the one in Vancouver!
Have been having brunch or breakfast there for years. The first time I ate at Fresgo's was at the downtown location about 25 years ago and I really liked it. Food is always very consistent and very large quantities, always take something home. I find it a very good place to go for breakfast and thank Walter for keeping it around.
Ive gone there twice now. The ambiance is completely lacking as it is an old 1980's type atmosphere inside. The food is fairly good and the portions are huge. Its impossible to eat a full meal considering their portions. The prices are very reasonable.
Walter came from Germany to work in the Chicago area many years ago. When he moved to Vancouver, he opened Fresgo Inn in Surrey, and Davie Street. To cut down on work demands, he sold Davie Street Fresgo a few years ago. Good move !
Now he concentrates on service and quality in Surrey.
Walter believes that no one should leave his restaurant hungry. That's why, when you order a dish, it's usually more than you can eat. He doesn't hire chefs who know how to cook a dish that could end up in the Vancouver Art Museuem, he hires chefs who know how to fill you up with good food, and still send you home with a doggy bag. Which would you prefer ?? DUH !!! ???
I've been going there for 15 years, I'll probably have my last store-bought meal on Earth there. Wanna know what I'm gonna have ? Probably the Large Super Sub on White ... no, wait, maybe the Bacon Mushroom Cheeseburger (with a pound of mushrooms) ... or the New York Steak (Chicago style -- Walter was the first chef in 40 years who got it just right by listening to what I wanted).
Fresgos is not dead, you just have to come to Surrey.
