Elisabeth's Chalet is a charming, small European restaurant
Four Generations of our family went to celebrate an 85th B'day just over a week ago. The owner and staff greeted us so nicely. Upon being seated we were immediately asked if we would like to start with something to drink, and looked after very well all evening, no rushing. There was something on the menu to suit everyone from 8 to 85. We all enjoyed the meal tremedously and the service was fantastic. Food was fresh and hot and so tasty. The ambiance is wonderful and relaxing. We were very pleased with everything that evening, including the singing of happy b'day, dessert and even the check was so reasonable!
Thank you everyone at Elizabeth Chalet, keep it coming as we will certainly be returning.
Went in for a dinner at about 6 on Sunday. Quickly shown to a table by a polite older man. Love the decor - great nostalgia for travel in the interior and for dinners at the grandparents. The little touches were much appreciated - sublime bread and butter, cold pots for the champagne, fresh cut (REAL!) flowers at every table as well as at the centrepiece, as well as liveried staff.
Went with the Prime Rib dinner special - $18 for an 8oz prime rib, yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes and vegetables. Prime rib was slightly overcooked (ordered medium rare, got on the far side of medium) but still moist, juicy, delicious and not overseasoned. Gravy not too salty. Mashed potatoes perfect, yorkshire pudding well done. Fresh-grated horseradish on offer - always a plus. To top it off, their desserts - on an oldfashioned cart - were reasonably priced for the quality. I had a delicious slice of banana cream pie, not overly sweetened and well-sized - perfect in every way.
Service was polite by continental standards - water was refilled without comment, whenever the glass was low (not after every sip), meal was checked on once and staff was not pushy or obsessed with upselling. I prefer this to the service at both asian and American-style restaurants, which fall on the extremes of the spectrum.
Overall, a fine place - if you're going for a steak, this is a much better deal than the Keg or similar and in much nicer surroundings.
We had dinner here last night with another couple. I pretty much agree with the comments made by the other diners. It was pretty noisy in there as they had a couple of large groups celebrating anniversaries and birthdays. It is really difficult to have a nice relaxing dinner with everyone singing happy birthday etc.
The food was decent, portions for the schnitzels are generous but the servings for the fish was just adequate. I had to have dessert as I was still hungry after the main course and sharing an appetizer. Dessert was lemon meringue pie and I could make better pie myself.
We would return as there is value for the money.
Speachless....
We drove through Cloverdale instead of heading home almost an hour away. I saw all the cars and thought...the food must be so good, "let's go!" Too bad for me, I still have a bad taste in my mouth and it has nothing really to do with the place or the food (although the potato was piping hot and wonderful the steak and veggies were cold...but my daughter's pasta was hot and delicious and my husband's was warm and OK because he is OK with that). I have a friend that says if the meals are cold but perfectly prepared, than it is the server's fault. How can I blame her for a supper hot potato and cooler steak...??
I will back up...it is Father's Day...but that is not why we were there...just driving through town (one that we do not live in but that a few of our friends recently purchased homes in...we will pass on this info to them...)...and we saw the only busy place in town. We were dressed up and wanted a nice place to sit and eat and run over the wonderful day that we had together. Elizabeth's had a full parking lot (the restaurant was not full however..). At first we were greeted in an ordinary fashion by a server that I cannot describe other than she was female. Then, we had a wonderful aging man say he would "love" to help us out...were we there with another party?...etc. I asked if we could stay even though we did not have a reservation...he said "we just so happen to have a table waiting and ready for us at this moment!"..what a charmer! I loved that I had convinced my family to stop in this little town....for the moment.
Our server was alright at the beginning and quickly plummeted into the worst I have ever seen.
These are the facts:
She let us know what the specials were.
We let her know we had seafood and mushroom allergies.
I ordered steak...she did not ask me how I would like it down.
She dropped off the food.
She did not check on the food.
She reached over my dress to serve my husband his meal nearly hitting my chin as she crossed..were were on the same side of the table by the aisle...weird...never seen it before..
My food was cold except for my potato was hot...strange...
She never came back to check on how the food was....never..never..bad mistake as far as serving...
I was going to let her know that me potato was hot and delicious and leave it alone...but she never came except to take things away...or maybe that was the busboy?
She came back and asked if want coffee or tea...go figure...we did not!
I put my credit card on top of my wallet...she came back and took it with the words..."I'll be back with this."
What ever happened to "would you like me to get the bill?"
She came back and dropped the credit card statement off that conveniently stated, "gratuity not included in the total..."...or something similar to the same....
I love to tip is how I should have begun this review...
I always leave a tip is how I will end it...
I gave a handsome tip to the owner as I went by and said:
"This is for you! You have done so much more tonight than our server did for us."
She seemed surprised I think because all she had done was show me where the restroom was...
The bill had one name on it..."Lori"
...so Lori...if you had a bad day...just remember...that someone is remembering the father, and uncle and brother that they lost...and they could hardly pick themselves out of bed...
But maybe...that is what is wrong with you as well...sorry for your loss if this is the case...
This week was interesting, as we ate at two "favorited" restaurants and had two completely different experiences. I'm going to only speak of the wonderful service, and delicious schnitzels that we had at Elizabeths. We both had starters (escargot, and crab cake) The presentation on the crab cake was the most beautiful I've seen for this particular appetizer, and if in the future I'm just looking for a very light meal, that's what I'm having again. We both ordered schnitzel (two different kinds, one with crab and asparagus, with hollandaise, and mine was plain). We have travelled fairly extensively, and this particuar schnitzel could have come right out of Salzburg. The decor may be dated, but it is reminiscent of what we seen in older restaurants in Northern Italy, Germany and Austria. To re-create this type of interior design would be pretty expensive. I notice newer "hipster" restaurants use a much less expensive but funkier decor.
We eaten here several times, and have never had less than impeccable service from any of the serve staff. They have been attentive, without being in your face, friendly without being overbearing. It is a type of service that is lacking in some of the more trendier restaurants.
I recommend this restaurant. It never ceases to show me consistent quality cuisine, service and hospitality.
A resturant from the old world and from a different time. The welcome from the owners is always a nice touch,as are the flowers and linen, something hard to find into todays world.
The food is excellent with special mention of their caesar salad and cheese bread(the best ever),and prime rib. This is a go to place that will never disappoint, one of our favorites, particularily for the multi generational meal.I highly recommend!
If you like old-school ambiance, with starched white linen tablecloths and napkins and wood panelling, come here. If you like classical European cuisine, tasty enough, albeit a little stodgy, come here. If you like good value for your roast-beef meal, come here. In fact, bring your grandma! But don't expect innovative cooking or trendy decor. Service is fairly good but I've never been there on a really busy night or day.
I had high hopes for this place, but things just seem to come up short of excellent. The food is very good, to be sure, but it's not really anything special. I've had several schnitzels and found them to be lacking in inspiration. They were only a little bit better than university cafeteria food I had in Zurich years ago (That cafeteria was actually rated 2* in a tourism guidebook). The red cabbage and spaetzle are kind of bland as side dishes. When the prime rib was $12 it was good enough to be a bargain, but the price has gone up and the meal isn't *that* good.
I read some of the negative reviews on this site regarding this restaurant. Things like; It's Ok for your Grandma, the ambeiance sucks, and it's not an authentic Euopean restaurant. My wife and I were there tonight and yes, we were mostly surrounded by Grandmas and Grandpas. And although quaint, you don't get the feeling your in Europe. So what? It was one of the nicest meals my wife and I have ever had. The owner greeted us at the door like we were relatives coming over for diner. Our waiters name was Nigel. No better anywhere. Let me give you one small example of his wonderful service. We ordered a bottle of wine with dinner, something we rarely do as we are on a tight budget. So after looking over the desert cart I asked how much they were. As we were thinking about it together and without saying anything to him, he brought us a chocolate moose with two spoons and said it was on him. Made our night! And my wifes sirloin was as good as we've ever tasted.
So that's it really. I just didn't want anyone to miss out on this lovely little romantic restuarant due to some of these negative reviews. Again, it's not that there entirely wrong. But even the very best restuarants aren't for everyone.
My husband and I have driven passed this place so many times and have always wanted to check it out. We finally got that chance last weekend, and we both left with full bellies and a smile. Neither of us have been this impressed with a restaurant like this as far back as we can remember.
The owner, Elisabeth greeted us and sat us down right away. The service was impecable...never letting our waters get below half way. The server was very nice and knew all there was to know about the menu. The food came out quickly. He had the prime rib and I had the filet mignon. Every bite was incredible and everything was prepared perfecctly. There was sooo much food, and I think the prices were very reasonable.
We saw the owner eating, and get up at least three times while with her meal to say goodbye to her regulars, and to sing "Happy anniversary" to a table.
When we were done, we told her how amazing our experience was and that we just got married...she gave us a bouquet of flowers!
I would definitely recommend this place !!
We have been to numerous Bavarian restaurants in Germany and this one does not even come close.
The red cabbage comes out of a tin and is not European. The schnitzels are way OVERPRICED.
Management managed to screw up our reservations last time out.
I have eaten at Elizabeth's many times and taken guests there and I have never been disappointed, with the food or service, the prime rib is excellent, salmon, steak all good,I can't tell you about the desert because I'm always to full to order any, it's licensed, the owner seems to run a tight ship, staff are prompt and courteous. the overall size of the place could be bigger {more spread out}, but I find it to be good food at a descent price for the servings.
We've enjoyed many a meal at Elizabeth's family run restaurant in the heart of Cloverdale. It's schnitzel menu is extensive, red cabbage if fabulous with pan fries. The steaks aren't the greatest but that's not their specialty. The dessert menu is wonderful (in a trolly and brought to your table, nice touch) and of course the service is great....enjoy!
