Sports Bar atmosphere. Lots of televisions and each booth has it's own interactive TV connected to the American horse betting scene. Stylishly decorated . Located in an industrial warehouse complex adjacent to the Canada US border.
Tried the food straight after driving through the border into Canada. Derby's have quite a few well priced food and drink specials. The house burger was tasty, but the accompanying fries were limp - cooked at too low a temperature, and the appetizer onion rings were greasy spoon, oil change type greasy. When I mentioned that the rings were way too greasy for me, the server offered to make a substitution. I chose the crab cakes which were excellent and recommendable. The creme brule was not 4 or 5 star, but only cost $4. Overall I would return next time, and then I will skip the onion rings, I will ask for any fries well done, and have chocolate mousse, or apple pie for dessert. Good value. Friendly accommodating service. Highs and lows of the food equal mediocre.
I agree with the last reviewer that it's a shame that there aren't more people enjoying this restaurant. We have also been there on the weekend when there are the dueling pianos. These two pianists are a lot of fun. They take requests and both play the song. They took my mom's request for Rasputin and my husband's request for the Stray Cats....OMG, how hilarious to hear them try to play these "non conventional" songs we threw out for a challenge. They both have a great sense of humor and will gladly try to play whatever you throw at them. What a lot of fun!
We have ordered their prime rib special which gives you a beautifully done piece of beef with tasty sides such as mashed potatoes, yorkshire pudding, gravy and steamed vegetables. Their salads are wonderful, fresh and generous.
The ambiance of the restaurant is upscale sports bar like, but comfortable and well stylish.
This restaurant should be busier, but perhaps because it's location it's a little off the beaten track for most people. Really, it's worth the trip though, just make sure you turn off towards it before you cross the border!
After reading the previous reviews, Mrs. G and I decided to have sunday lunch at the Derby Grill . What a great suprise. Its a horse racing betting restaurant. We ordered the Steak sandwich with caesar salad and I ordered the Beef dip with onion rings. We enjoyed our potato skins as an appetizer, with real bacon and sour cream, they were wonderful and tasty. Its a 50km drive from Vancouver to the Derby Grill and worth the trip. Our next visit will be for the Prime Rib Dinner this sunday, and looking forward to it.
Whatever we ordered service was slow.
Food was of poor quality. I ordered a m.rare ribeye and received a thin slice of prime rib that was well done. My wife had a pasta dish that was salty and cold. My son had a steak sandwich with onion rings that were partly cooked.
We ordered two 1/2 liters(for four) of wine then watched as the bar tender and waitress tried to open the bottles. As it took so long to open the wine, it arrived 1/2 way thru dinner. We were then given four glasses and two, one glass carafes of wine. When questioned, the waitress exclaimed, oh I did not notice that! The white wine ordered was a $29.00 1/2 liter and the delivered wine was not what was ordered. We gave up.
By the way, only about five patrons in the establishment.
Ambience was good. Great help with betting. Could be a fun place. Menu was very lacking. A better "appy" menu is a must. Will not go back even though we were compt. for my "steak".
Nice atmosphere ,very clean ,nicely attired wait staff.
Steak Oscar [$21.00] was perfectly prepared .Plenty of shrimp and crab meat . Waitress had to be called back as she failed to enquire on how to tell the chef to do steak. Steak and Veges done perfectly.{8/10}
Baby Back ribs [$18] ribs tough,v. little meat ,tasty bourbon sauce ,veges done perfectly but very small portion.{3/10}
When waitress asked how we were enjoying meal {my comment "JUST OK "}, she didn't hear my comments as she appeared distracted by other bar patrons .
So in horsey talk "win .place or show" --one winner and one nag that had no business being in the race . Will give it another chance ,but with so many places to dine in south Surrey it has only one more chance to redeem it's self.
You may think it's out of the way but really it's easy for all from Surrey White Rock or Langley. A sure fire not to miss if using the border!
We have had the Prime Rib which is quite likely the best around these parts! Generous portions with all the trimmings. Salads are freshly prepared with quality produce for sure. Try the Halibut simply delicious, poached in a light champange cream sauce, again generous and with all the trimmings.
The service was top notch both the executive chef and the sous chef checked on us and how our meals were. The waitress did not miss a beat.
If this place was in the city you would be paying big $$$$ for this quality.
Don't miss this place it's well worth the visit, we keep looking for any occasion to go!
We have been here twice recently on weekend nights when they have "dueling pianos" there were not many people in the place, which is too bad as the pianists were great and it would have been more fun with a bigger crowd. Our food was really good. The penne pasta with chicken was tasty, and the salads were very good. Our service was excellent. We really enjoyed being able to bet on the horses. We will definitely go back!
