Very tasty food but location could have been better
By Huge of Surrey (86 Reviews)

Went there with the better half for a early dinner. We both ordered the Goa Curry with Prawns and Butter chicken and clementa (similar to a torritia shell). Both dishes came with white rice. At first there seem very little food for the price tag. But once you start to eat you start to fill up. The tast was very good. I was impressed with the flavour. It is definitely not the cheapest Indian restaurant but I was not disappointed. The location could be better as it was tucked away on King George Highway. We used the Entertainment book coupon and that reduce the sting of the price overall. I would recommend this restaurant for the taste and service. But the price is little over the norm for an indian restaurant.

World's Most expensive DOSA
By jsingh of Surrey (12 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, August 13, 2011 - 11:22am [Take-out]

least expensive DOSA for $8, rest of them $9. WoW

No tandoor, so no fresh tandoori roti, no fresh naans (just packed food). I wonder how are they going to survive these short comings & over pricing in Surrey Area where their are already over 30-40 restaurant Indian.

Good food, but very expensive... I hope to see they selling Dosa's for $30/each in near future ;)

Some items are far too overpriced!

The restaurant is located in a new strip mall with ample parking. The ambiance is fine, but it's more of a family restaurant than fine dining.

This is a sister restaurant to Mayuri, so some of the cuisine overlaps between the two restaurants. This place serves meat & seafood while Mayuri only has vegetarian dishes.

I love Mayuri so this is why we tried Dakshin.

Be warned about the Biryani chicken. This dish costs $14 and consists of one chicken leg/thigh with back attached! The rest is basmati rice and it comes with sauces. Their pricing for the Biryani chicken is beyond ridiculous. I lived in Toronto and a similar dish with a whole egg and a chicken leg can be had for $4. (Note that I am not asking this dish to be priced at $4 but hey even pricing at $10 you are making at least a $9 profit! A fair price for the chicken version of this dish would be $7 or $8. Or better yet add some boneless pieces of meat to the dish, currently there is FAR too much rice and not enough meat. I miss Toronto's pricing for a range of foods but I realize the market in Vancouver is different.)

It tasted okay but I was simply in shock over the pricing. For a much better deal and yummy biryani just head to Biryani Garden also located in Surrey.

They also offer their prawn biryani for $14 that might be a better deal.

Their aloo paratha isn't flavourful and again sticker shock at $4... it's not worth beyond $2/$3 such a simple dish to make with cheap ingredients.

A much better value was their prawn/masala aloo dosa. Mayuri is also known for their delicious dosa's and this place matches the quality of Mayuri. The prawn dosa was $10 and the prawns tasted good.

The channa/aloo chat was also a great value at $5.

Their appetizers consist of mainly fried items, I'd like some healthier options as well as more appetizers besides fried pakora type things.

Also some of their veggie dishes simply seem overpriced. $10 for channa masala? $3 for masala chai? Come on, tea is cheap and should be included with the meal.

Their food is solid, but they can really work on the value and pricing of some of their dishes. We'll order from here again but the very overpriced chicken biryani will be skipped for sure.

One thing that you could least expect is in a restaurant is having your food mircrowaved and served.
We ordered chicken 65 for starters. Before that we were served with papad and chutney which was ok.
The chicken 65 lands in front of us. My wife at one look said, wait! this is has been heated and she was right.
You can fool people who have no general idea of how freshly made food would taste and look like. This looked like the chicken was made 65 years ago and then heated and served to us. Then comes our Thali. So we just spoke to ourselves and said we are ok these heating stuff happens everywhere. The thali was what shocked us for the price. Two different types of cold variety rice and a Sambar which has to be labelled as "unknown" still not invented in any kitchen of South India.

Hi, the food is good for what you pay for. I recommend you try this restaurant and other similar ones in the area. The service is good and the atmosphere is awesome. The curry smells and taste fresh. The washroom is clean and the parking is limited. The combo is a great deal for a large family or for a couple.

Best Indian food outside of Vij's
By Thomas V. of Toronto and Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, September 21, 2010 - 8:46am [Take-out]

I've eaten Indian food all over Canada, and in terms of flavour and quality this place ranks second only to Vij's in Vancouver. My favourite dishes include Fish 65, Lamb Biryani, Andhra chicken curry, and vegetable curry. Still would like to try their prawn dishes.

I believe most of their current business is from takeout (which is what I do), because I rarely see more than a few people eating there in the evenings (their lunch buffet, on the other hand, I've heard pulls in a crowd). But should you wish to eat in, you'll be impressed by the extremely friendly service, as well as a spacious, comfortable, and exceptionally clean environment.

I've ordered there about 15-20 times, the last time being August 2010. Never been disappointed.

Dakshin Dum Biryani is the best biryani I ever had, The chef prepares very authentic and complete balanced...if u think of Biryani than the Dakshin is the right place, don't ever miss it...You can also order family pack very much sufficient for a family of four and you have a choice of Chicken, Lamb, shrimp and vegetable to choose.

Great food, If you are willing to pay ...

Dakshin is a great restaurant that I have been to several times now. The food is superb and the service and ambiance is really nice as well. The only disadvantage is that the prices can be slightly over the top for many people. If money is not a concern, then you must check this restaurant out. If you want value and dont want to cough up a lot of money, this is not the best place to go. A vegetarian meal for 4 cost us $80 while other restaurants we would pay about $50-60. Not a huge difference but can be a factor for individuals depending on what you order.

Best Indian Food in Lower Mainland
By Piyush of Surrey (1 Review)
Submitted Friday, August 7, 2009 - 9:52pm [Dine in]

This place since their cooks arrived from Hyderabad has been consistently good. The Chettinad / Hydrabadi cuisine is excellent and for those who are not familiar with it, try it. Easily the best authentic Indian in Lower Mainland. Have dined there often and the food has always been exceptionally good. Good service and vary attentive. True hospitality from the server...Take it from a pro...

We were long anticipating the opening of this restaurant because they serve South Indian cuisine. The food ( Prawn Biryani ) lived upto our expectation .The prices however we felt were a bit too steep for the quantity offered. We will most likely not return unless we were desperate enough to eat the Biryani.

Where is the meat????

It was late night round 7-8pm my family and I were on the prowl for some Indian food I've ordered delivery from here before and was appeased with the food.

Dinning in was a mistake as my children didn't eat and my husband and I only ate. Wow talk about over priced for the three dishes we ordered We literally had a high ratio of sauce to meat in the curries.

I'm normally not negative but when I spend $100+ on a meal I expect top notch service and great food. The food tasted good but not for the over price. Family restaurant pricing? I think not. Maybe Dakshin should remove the "family restaurant "part of their sign, if my kids did eat that night we would have been charged high-class pricing for mediocre family restaurant Indian food.

Word for the wise eat here when your not hungry maybe you won't feel so ripped off.

Hyderabad's Finest

I have been dying to taste an authentic Biriyani, Hyderabadi style for ten years now. I have found just the place. It was simply as good as taking a trip back home.Th Andhra Lamb Curry, The fish Pulusu, The Goa Prawn curry were worth travelling all that way for. The ambience is deffinetly one of the better Indian retaurants I have dinedat in the lower mainland. The Prawn masala and kheema dosa's were deliciuos. The service was as good as it ever gets. This is the place to go if your looking for some quality south Indian cuisine. This is not a place for deserts. Rasmalai though was top quality, howeverit is all the desert you are going to get here. Still worth taking the family and friends too.

excellent Hyderabadi and chettinad cuisine
By shan of burnaby,bc (1 Review)
Submitted Friday, January 16, 2009 - 4:40pm [Dine in]

It is one of the best Indian cuisine I have come across in North America( I lived in the West, Mid west mostly and visited East coast on multiple occasions). I was bowled over by its Hyderabadi Biryani. Restaurant stands true to its name. We also tried Chettinad chicken and Malabar fish curry. They were very authentic. The spice was right for my Andhra palate. We will be visiting this place again soon to try some more of these south Indian specials.
