Celtic Times is an Irish pub and restaurant in Surrey
If you didn't expect any of those in Surrey check out Celtic Times. This place is an island unto itself. Amazing. Excellent light fare, very cozy, eclectic decor, service was prompt and friendly, the girl was positively gorgeous babe, the food was tasty, but not over the top just good Canadian fare. Excellent place for a date dinner or with close friends.
Since the new owners the place has gone down the tube.
For last two days they havehad no heat and the temperature in this
place has been below frezzing. In summer the air condition is always out of order.
The place has taken a bad rap because of its owner who dont pay bills and wages.
Baliffs have been seen frequently too !
Dropped into this newly-renovated pub/restaurant at lunch time on the holiday weekend. Nicely upgraded with an Irish slant from the rather shabby pub that used to be there....
Hubby had the all day Irish Breakfast, which had a large banger (spicy sausage), bacon, two eggs, choice of toast, sliced tomatoes and lattice-fried potatoes. I ordered from the appy section of the menu, and had "nachatoes"...the same deep-fried lattice potatoes with two cheeses, green onions, olives, banana peppers, salsa, sour cream and a spicy mustard-mayonnaise dip. Kinda like a Tex-Mex poutine...! Both choices were very good, but the nachatoes are definately a share-plate I only got through about half of it!
Service seems to be still in the "settling-in" phase, but pleasant enough. When a glass exploded in her hand as she was putting it on the table, the server was VERY apologetic (not her fault...dishwasher stress), and mopped us up with more apologies. When we got the bill, she had taken the cost of one of the drinks off to compensate for the excitement...
Most definitely an improvement on this corner. Much classier ambiance, and the menu looks interesting. We will be back.
Always good service at the Celtic Times, bringing it up a notch from the cave that is the new Lions and some of the other local watering holes. It was disappointing to see them remove Kilkenny and try to replace it with Caffrey's (a poor substitute) but I guess profit margins rule.
Haven't had a lot of food there but what I've had has been decent (not outstanding). The meat draws seem to be popular but also appear to attract the legion crowd.
Looked back at the previous add and realized we accidentally gave 4 stars which equals outstanding.
Overall nice pub - not outstanding though - don't want to mislead.
Can't find a way to edit previous reviews so wanted to clarify.
I've beeen coming here over a year and half know, kind of a regular I guess.
FOOD: Can use a price adjustment, but nothing to complain about. Tried pretty much every appy(except for the ones with pork), and i'm equally impressed. The 2-for-$11 appys is great idea(any appy under $9 and also they have them at certain time of day) I believe its from 3-6 pm Mon-Thurs(best call in and check first). The one that is misleading in regards to this is that the Guiness is on the the appy menu($6.50/pint) and is not included on the 2-for-$11 appy menu (that would be nice if they can do that). During the Canucks regular season games or playoffs they offer the Canuck burger and also offer a bucket of Molson or a couple of other brews by the bucket(4 bottles). The shrimp purses and veggie spring rolls can be oily and greasy, although the Yorkshire pudding with beef in the middle is tasty, the pizzas are okay, and the tradtional Irish fare is very good indeed(Irish stew, steak/kidney pie).
SERVICE: The service can use improvement in a few areas. The bar tenders are friendly. The same can't be said of some waiteresses. I can't help but agree with SHINDIGS comment of the blond waiteress, she provided poor service. There are a couple of other waitresses but they aren't that bad, but they weren't always like that . At one point their were many friendly, charming and inviting waitresses there. WHERE DID THEY ALL GO???????????????? The bathrooms were clean when I was there.
VALUE: Like I said earlier can use a price adjustment, but reasonably okay. (But that depends on the service u receive)
AMBIANCE: Game nights(Canucks playing) can be loud full of cheering fans, likewise when a UFC fight is on. On other nights it's a nice retreat for Irish pub fare. Best to go during the week when its not that busy. On certain weekends they have a live band(call before u go), personally I'm still wating for the Celtic Women to show up, for that matter The Great Big Sea and/or Ashlye McIssac(what about River Dance).
Overall a good place to eat drink and be merry!!!!
We have been to most if not all the Irish pubs in Vancouver area and we rate this as the best. The food selection is nicely varied, the prices for the quality of food and quantity is reasonable and below what we paid for less in other restaurants. The service has always been excellent and not rushed. I would recommend the Celtic Times to anyone for a great and relaxing evening.
I occasionally attended Gary T's but did not like the place. Celtic Times is a big improvement. While the fake Irish certainly does not compare to Dublin Crossing, it has become a nice little pub. I have only had a few things on the menu but I was pleased each time. Excellent pepper and salt wings. Prices are reasonable. Service has been good as there are a few regular servers who are great like T.L. My one bitch is the lack of selection of premium beers. They got rid of Kilkenny which really sucks! and they need to add a few more beers especially given they claim to be an Irish pub. A nice place to hang out for a beer. Check it out...
The food is great here. The bartenders are great. It's clean, big, open and usually a darn good time.
Most the servers are pretty decent. Average pub servers except one. The one with long blonde hair. She can't seem to smile, ever. And she gives the worst service I've ever seen. She acts like it's a personal attack on her everytime I or someone I'm with stops her to ask for another drink, or a fork for our dinner. She doesn't check back in to see if you need anything unless you're sitting at the big round table in the front of the pub, or outside. You have to be an everyday regular to get some service out of this girl.
There used to be a girl who worked there with ever-changing hair (unfortunately I can't remember her name) who was so sweet and happy and ALWAYS checked in on everyone, even if she was really busy. Where did that girl go? I haven't seen her working there in about 3 or 4 months. They need more servers like her.
But yah, otherwise, the place is pretty good. Just lose the one server and I wont have any problems whatsoever.
Well after my last review I thought we would try it again, This time we had the drink specials told to us and the food specials came on a sheet of paper, very impressed with that. I tried the bangers and mash cant go wrong with that, it was tastey. My only comment would be that it is a bar you go to regularly it is not one to go just for checking it out, as you can tell who are the Normal every day ones in there and then the not so regular ones. The staff seems to like the regulars and caters to them more often and clearly over serves some of them, as you could hear them yelling back and forth to one another and playing around, If i were to be the first time in there I would not go back, the swearing and the topic of chat is not ok thank god there werent any kids there. But Food was good!
Well well, quite a nice surprise for my lady and myself to eat at this pub which recently changed from Gary T's. We tried Gary T's ONCE and that was pretty much enough for us. I simply had to find a venue to express my appreciation for this new pub Celtic Times this also being my first review here on 'dinehere' and first time to have the inspiration to do so . We had the good luck to have decided to try things out on a thursday which is ap special night 3-9pm i think, and it is two aps for $11. My g/f ordered her usual , she loves Kalamari and we were not disappointed. It was tender hot and tasty and the make this interesting dip rather than Tatziki sauce which is a cashew and red onion in yogurt. I ordered the stuffed yorkshire pudding which is two yorkies stuffed with shaved angus beef topped with gravy and horseradish drizzle. I haven't really had yorkshires but i think they are supposed to be a little more fluffy and flakey. These yorkies seemed to be more like a nice type of soft roll but i must say..... they were still pretty damn good. The portion was a lot bigger than i would have expected and the gravy was excellent. My lady ordered a burger with bacon and cheese and mushrooms and... i tried it and man.... i was impressed and so was she. I know i know..... just a burger but, IT WAS EXCELLENT. I also ordered the shaved angus and the yorkshire for the main course which seems kinda brave to me now considering i was not well versed in yorkshires , nor had i eaten here before.... hmmm... anyway... i got lucky cuz the presentation was excellent the veggies were little carrots sauteed in butter and herbs with some really sweet yellow beets and a couple spears of asparagus and mashed potatoes and gravy on the angus and yorkies. I'll say it again...... DAMN IMPRESSED i highly recommend it. It's better than earls the keg sammy j peppers and the cactus club.
