The Cactus Club has over 20 locations in BC and Alberta and features an eclectic menu selection that includes steaks, rice bowls, dinner sized salads and more.
We were visiting a friend in Morgan Creek on the weekend and decided its too far to drive to Vancouver so stayed local... apparently Cactus is the happening place in White Rock (as the 45 min. wait and packed parking lot suggests)
Ambience: was quite nice and the patio with fire grills gave this Cactus an edge over its other locations
Food: was as expected for a chain - good, but not fantastic. However, I did like their drinks selection with some innovative drinks.
Service: was horrible on several counts. Our server was nice, but slow and/or forgetful. It took him a while to bring us our drinks, and when he got them to the table, he messed up my friend's order. She said that it's ok, the drink he brought was fine but he insisted on bringing the drink she ordered. He never took back the first drink so it was assumed one of these drinks would be comped... they both showed up on the bill.
The food took just under an hour to get to the table, and when we were done, it took the server another 20 minutes to clear the table and offer desserts (of which we said no to because it was already 11pm and we just didn't want to wait again).
Also, to de-bunk a myth, our server was a man, and perhaps not the stereotypical server you foodies might have imagined. =)
This location of Cactus is not recommended.
Took out a client here for lunch on Thursday. We weren't too hungry so we had some appetizers instead... I had the Chicken Tandoori quesadilla (excellent with the mango chutney) and my client had the hawaiian poke. The girls who work at this place are quite visually appealing. It can be a little distracting when you're trying to do business ;-) The place was packed, which I guess is a testament to it's quality and presentation.
Cactus Club has been my least favourite of what I consider the big three upscale chains. I've always found them (at least the Scott Rd location) to be incredibly noisey. Milestones & Earl's I consider the the other two in this category and I may have to reverse that & place it ahead of Earl's, whose restaurants have been remodelled & the noise levels gone through the roof. The South Surrey location caters to the business crowd. The bar area is the first you will see upon entrance & where we sat recently.
What strikes is the extent this chain has gone to market their concept. The female wait staff are all outfitted in various black desses. The eye contact and pleasant manner stands out. They are there to impress & the service is good & as they carter to that business crowd, very professional.
On our most recent visit we all had the same luncheon special, that being the Short Rib sandwich. The quantity was ample & the beef tender. A tad messy to eat. Even at Xmas lunch we were in and out in 45 minutes.
Craving a cool place to have lunch on a hot day, we dropped by the Cactus Club Cafe in South Surrey. Lunch hour was bustling with a lot of business. We were seated by the outdoor patio. View was nice, servers were constantly coming by to fill water, get new drinks, etc. My wife had the Rob Feenie select Seafood Pasta & I had the Prime Rib burger. We split a dessert. The food was good but pricey at around $20 for each dish. With the tip the bill came out to about $65 for lunch. I guess you pay for the ambiance.
So what you see is what you get:
Staff up to the usual standards for the franchise?
Decor is as you'd expect?
Place is slammed on Friday and Saturday nights?
What actually surprises me about this particular location is that in the 4-5 times I've been since it opened, what comes out of the kitchen is well above average for the chain (and competition). The service can be a bit hit and miss (they don't hire based on experience, per se, if you catch my drift) but overall it's certainly good enough.
For those of us in the bridge and tunnel crowd this is a welcome addition to the area and I bet it puts a big hurt on some of the restaurants down on the beach, not to mention the Milestone's around the corner.
like any of the cactus club cafes they have great food and the ambiance is great, especially the patio. The service is like any other restaurant you have some servers that are great and some that aren't. The only thing is there are incredibly long wait times for this cactus club. Moreover some of the people that go there are troublemakers and ive been there when there has been fights that happen in the middle the restaurant.
We have been here a few times. Every time the food is great and the atmosphere is really nice. The service was also great. The washrooms even have tvs inside the stalls (my kid really liked that part lol) We have been there twice and will be going again definately.
Shopping in south Surrey and decided to try the Cactus Club in the complex. Not sure what is considered ambiance but long wait, high noise level with tables packed together is NOT mine. While waiting for a table, you are facing a place where the staff are continually going in and out, It is hard not to notice that all staff members are really attractive people - lots of Barbies and Kens. I kept looking for someone who was overweight, or average looking....or pregnant. I have no respect for a place that hires on appearance first, even though our server was good and attentive. I just found it very off-putting. The food was good and, considering how busy the place was, service was good too. But, I won't go back. I like to dine in a relaxing atmosphere where I can hear my friends speak without leaning forward to hear what they are saying. If Cactus Club is getting that mkuch business at that location, they should expand or add a 2nd location.
I've eaten there a number of times and loved every minute of it. I've been there enough times that the employees actually know me by name now which is awesome to hear for a chain restaurant. That kind of thing doesn't happen anymore. At least not that I know of. I will come back here again and again as I continue to have amazing service! Friday and Saturday nights are always busy so I like to head out a little earlier but its totally worth the wait.
I went here with my girlfriend. Wanted to treat her out for a nice meal. I ordered the Fajita's she ordered the spicy chicken and salmon shrimp appetizer's. Food arrived was nice to see it all. The Fajita honestly tasted like a mc wrap which is only 2 dollars at Mc Donalds. The chicken was horribly over cooked and terribly dry. I thought the kids in the kitchen go to school to cook these days? The spicy chicken tasted like a 12 year old Asian kid's idea of Asian food. The only thing good was the salmon and shrimp which was very nicely prepared and good tasting. I got the bill sure it's 62 dollars. I gave the waitress 100 dollars she gave me back four 5 dollar bills and a toonie. I was having a good conversation with my girlfriend and didn't realize she didn't give me the correct money back. I gave her on top of the money she stole 12 dollars. So she ended up with a 28 dollar TIP?!?!? I didn't realize it until today and I'm really upset about that. I will never again return to this restaurant. There are far better places out there to eat.
We came to cactus Club on Saturday night with a group of 12 friends and we loved it. After spending a few minutes hunting around looking for the place my friend in Surrey had picked, we were pleasantly surprised when we stuck our heads in and the comfort and ambiance of cactus Club presented itself. First impressions were correct. Very cute, lots of pretty blondes.
We were taken to our table which was a bit squishy but again reminded us of other cactus Clubs, it was obvious that they were very busy so we were happy that they could fit us in. After ordering our drinks we were served with a complimentary mini salad. Cool.
The food was great as were the drinks, service was pretty good considering how busy they were and the quality of presentation. By the end of the night it was pretty noisy, I suppose thats part of creating atmosphere.
All in all we were pretty impressed by this little place. My advice is to come without your wives... sooo good.
