Asian Spice is a fusion restaurant that mixes up Chinese and Indian food creating a variety of dishes to choose from.
We had the ginger lamb and Mongolian chicken the other evening. I find the lamb dish tasted pretty good but had way too much meat tenderizer.
The chicken, however, was just very spicy, without much flavour. The service was good and the restaurant was nice and spacious, good for a quiet meal. Will I return? If I happen to be in the area, I might give it another try.
Food: Everything was really yummy from the chili beef to the fookyien fried rice. Spicy so if you're not used to it, tell the waitresses so they can pare down the spicyness. Even my dad, the hater of all foods that is not fully chinese, found it surprisingly good. It's too bad they don't serve tea like chinese restaurants do. Also, many of the dishes come with a lot of sauce so you need to have a lot of rice to eat with it!!
Service: I think they were training a new waitress so it required some patience. No one really asked how our food was or really double-checked on us. Water did come very quickly tho when we ran out. They also over-calculated our bill - if it hadn't been for my bf, we would overpaid by almost $40!
Ambiance: It looked chinese on the inside but was playing east indian music - cute. Not really good for large parties who plan on sharing dishes since they don't have round tables like traditional chinese restaurants so we ended up having to pass dishes up and down our line of tables. It's def. the kind of restaurant that becomes one of the regular places that you go to cuz of the good eats but I would be wary of bringing a date you'd wanna impress.
Overall: Not bad - probably come back to try some of the other dishes. Remember to bring your entertainment coupon to save yourself some moola!!
I have been a patron of Asian Spice for many years-have actually craved their food. I placed an order today for pick up. After picking it up and driving home (to Newton) I realized that they had given me the wrong item. I called the restaurant and spoke to the server and told her that it was wrong and I wanted it replaced for which she agreed. I stated I could not come back immediately but would return in an hour.
Once I arrived I was greeted by the owner/manager and explained that I was there to pick up the food. I brought the incorrect dish back as proof. The manager argued with me, denied that I had actually ordered anything that day while the server there did not say anything. I explained the situation again and again and was met with denial and accusation that I had brought back old half eaten food to the restaurant( it was less than 2 hours old and not half eaten).
It was not until the waitress finally spoke up, acknowledged that I had placed the order and the error that had been made that thhe manager begrudgingly acknowledged that it was a mistake on their part, refused a refund (because by that time I really wasn't interested in eating their food) but did concede to giving the correct dish.
I actually have to say I felt humiliated by this experience-she made me feel like I was a low life thief for virtually 12$ worth of food. I was actually in tears by the end of this. I told her this was very poor customer service and was pretty much told that I don't have to eat there anymore (which I won't).
I have never met a person that rude in my life and I understand the waitresses hesitation to come forward (for fear of being chewed out). I hope this owner reads this and all the other reviews out there about her as it seems that she is a big problem to the success of this place.
WILL NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN!!!
I've been visiting this restaurant for years and ever since the management changed I’ve been disappointed each time I’ve been here.
Today I had ordered take out knowing that I didn’t care much for their service and didn’t have the patience to deal with it.
I had ordered szechuan vegetable WITH EXTRA GRAVY and specifically told the girl who was taking my order that I’d like extra gravy on the side in large rice box they normally use. ( I CANNOT GET MORE SPECFIC THAN THAT), and vegetable Manchurian chowmein.
When I came back home I realised the extra gravy was in a small tub 1/3 rd of the size I had asked for and and the noodles weren’t machuirain style they were just plain old noodles.
Obviously being disappointed again, I called the restaurant and asked for a manager. When she came on the phone she was extremely rude and her tone wasn’t professional. She said the girl who took my order did me a FAVOUR by giving me the extra gravy (which I paid extra for by the way!) and that they are usually not supposed to give gravy on the side . I tried explaining to her it would have been nice if I was told that when that when the order was picked. At that point she became was very abrasive and combative.
Then I told her I had PAID for vegetable Manchurian chowmein and not regular chowmin her response to that was “WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO’? I said it would be fair to give me a refund for additional money I paid for the Manchurian chowmein that I never got. At that point she blurted something and hung up
The bottom line is the management is HORRIBLE they obviously don’t know what customer service is. The manger was combative and unprofessional. I’m left feeling cheated and bitter.
I used to go here for the food but will never come here again. Too bad the owners changed and the new staff and the “manager” are chasing customers away.
There's no customer service here, no accountability for screwing their customers over. NA-DA. I was given the wrong dish and was told the kitchen made a mistake, however I won't get a refund and or a replacement for it. I was then patronized by being offered a 10% discount on my next order. (Please note: they have 10% off on ALL their take out orders. So in reality I'm getting a slap on the face)
I've never been to a business with such blatant lack of ownership for their mistakes. In the past they've over cooked my food, reduced portion sizes, brought me the wrong order and the list can go on. Besides, by the looks of it, other customers have had similar experiences. They're consistently screwing up, way to go!!
My advise would be to try some restaurants down the street, it can only get better from here. And watch your receipts, this place seems hella shady to me.
Adios never coming here again!!!
Went to asian spice on saturday .did the ordering by ph it was a take out ,when i brought the food at home,it wasnt the right order, i ordered fried rice .instead they gave me chowmein .ordered szchuan lamb ,manchurian beef ,chilli chicken dai ching lamb ,these are all different names but they all taste the same , packed with gravy when i asked for little gravy for the wrong order phoned them back .the serice girl was laughing intead of saying sorry ,i asked for her name she refused to give .wanted to complain it to the owner jalil .but he is never there.asked for his ph # she refuse that .now i know why thta resturant is always empty no customer service .an all the food taste the same .they just put whole bunch different names on the menu chart .when u ask the service desk to discribe the items in the manu chart ,they tell u something else .an when u get the order its something else.
poor poor poor service
Servers here are snooty and have a very little understanding of how to treat customers.
I and my friend came here on Saturday hoping to try something different than the usual fusion Indo- Chinese food restaurant we go to.
The server who greeted us was grumpy and it felt like she was doing us a favour by seating us. Then it took her at least 15 minutes to come and take our order and when she did she brought us the wrong dish.
Since it looked good we decided to give it a try. Later my friend wanted to order coke but the servers were nowhere in sight. Not once did anyone bother checking on us and when she decided to show up it was to serve another table.
Do yourselves a favour don’t bother with this place
Had to try this place after reading the many good reviews from here. Ordered the Mongolian beef, and vegetable noodle with hot garlic. Very good, the beef was very tender, and very spicy. The noodles were also very good, (the order was large, took half home). The service was also very good, and our server came around and asked if we needed anything. Would go back again to try something else.
Finally had a chance to try out this place in the entertainment book. Walked in on a Saturday evening. Place was half full. Darkly lit with traditional lanterns along with dark furniture. We were seated in a booth right away. Waitress/owner? approached us right away and showed us the menu. Asked if we need help ordering. Made a few suggestions re: house specialties etc.
Ended up trying Manchurian prawns which was just delicious. Dark sauce full of flavor and spices. Didn't get that many prawns tho. Ended up taking the sauce home and made myself a Manchurian chicken dish with veggies the next day. House special chicken. I swear they taste like Taiwanese "salt crunchy chicken" except you would roll them in tandoori seasoning after it's deep fried. Delicious without being over powering with spices. Hot and Sour soup that was good also (a small would feed 2 people). Kulfi for desert (I didn't like it but my husband did). Tasted like ice cream in a roll shape with bits of pitaschio in it and other things. Also tried Indian beer which was light and refreshing. Food wise, it was excellent. Service was good, prompt, and friendly. Prices are not bad with average $10-15 for entrees. Definitely will return. For those entertainment coupon holders, please note they only have this one location. The other location listed in the back was closed down years ago.
This place was recommended to me by a friend, so my girlfriend and I decided to check it out last week.
For a place tucked away off of Scott Road in Surrey, the ambiance wasn't bad. I had read that they play Indian music in contrast with their Asian decor, but the radio seemed to be on when we were there......disappointing but not a deal-breaker.
The service was very good, but perhaps was a little too "try-hard". Our server was awkwardly overzealous, and just a little socially awkward too......made the first few minutes more uncomfortable than they needed to be.
The food was served insanely fast. Like "did they just have it sitting there in the kitchen ready to go" fast......But it tasted fresh, and was generally delicious. Nothing special though.....their Szechuan Wonton was very flavorful, the Hot Garlic Vegetable Noodle dish was a large portion for a great price, and the Ginger Prawns were very tasty.
All-in-all, our bill was very small and our stomachs were very full. All the food was good enough to want to finish off at home (and we had a decent amount of take-home). This isn't a place I'm going to look forward to going to again, but if I'm in the area, and I'm craving spicy food while my wallet is light, I'll stop in for sure.
We were in the Surrey area and feeling a little hungry, so I flipped through our Entertainment book to find this place. I've been dying to try chinese/indian fusion cuisine. The place was really quiet when we got there...I guess it was right before the dinner rush, but the service was great.
Food: The food was amazing! Everything was so delicious! We made the mistake of ordering everything spicy...so, balance it out with something familiar from a regular chinese restaurant. The chili chicken (with gravy) was really good, so was the veggie pankora (indian style tempura). The chef even sent us out a sample dish of the house fish! That was great.
Service: The waitress was awesome, she was very helpful with explaining items, what was good to try, and very patient with us. They DO serve chinese tea there! Also, they have a pitcher of water there...for later.
Ambiance: It was quite nice, a little dark, but the decor was like one of a small chinese restaurant, quite cute.
Overall, I'm definitely going there again, eventhough it might be a little out of the way. The food is definitely worth the trip!
Food and service is good. However, the soup can be cold at times. Ask them to heat it a bit longer. I love their mangolion beef and fried rice. Cantonese noodles are also very delicious. Prices could be a bit lower for the amount of portions they provide. Overall Asian Spice is a good experience!
I returned to this restaurant for the second time and again the food was excellent. This time I took my family and they enjoyed the food just as much as I did. My kids just absolutely loved the chicken chow mein. We had ordered 5 items in total, not only did we enjoy the food at the restaurant, we had plenty of left to take home!
My girl friend recommended Asian Spice Indian style Chines Restaurant which is kind of tucked in the Royal bank Plaza on Scott Rd and 94th ave. We decided to dine in on the last weekend, This was our first and let me tell you that the food was great and had fairly large portions beyond our expectations. Little over $29 we ended with some take out! We will highly recommend.
A cut above the usual chinese food. The indian fusion choices add another level. Lots of choice and excellent quality. Nice family that owns it. Try the prawns guy ding..so good or the chilli chicken yum. Word of advice though, try to avoid weekdays between 1130 and 1230 as the local high school kids use this restaurant as a second school cafeteria! Other wise, the lunch special is an excellent deal. Recommended.
We had a birthday dinner here on June 25th and invited family. The food was superb, especially the hakka fish (recommended by the house), House Chicken, Thai green curry and a lamb dish. Everyone exclaimed over the unique and distinct flavours of each dish. However we missed the small print on the menu that mentioned that 20% tip would be included for a party of ten or more and also missed it on the invoice. So when the interact asked for tip, I added another 10% and so paid over $40 in tips for a meal of $160. Though it did not seem too bad considering the excellence of the food, it did leave us with mixed feelings. I remember a couple of restaurants we had been to in the past did remind us to ignore the interact query when tip is included in the invoice, and it would have a courteous thing to do if they had done it here.
Asian Spice provides great food, service and a decent atmosphere. First of all, hakka fish.It was chopped vegii in spicy sauce poured on long fillet of fish and steam rice goes well together. The portion is so big that 1 plate of chow mein, roughly 3 people can have. Every dish has distinct flavour and different spice level. House speicality of asian spice is one the most creative thing ever. House fish or chicken or even paneer in tandoori flavour, crispy and strong tandoori essence. The price was way too decent. I mean very cheap compared to the portion of the dish. Everytime I'm treated like so called VIP guest. Yes, when its busy things could be here and there, but its in every restaurent. Things can never be perfect, but in Asian spice every visit satisfies my taste bud makes be go back there.I make sure I do my job by leaving good tips and showing how much I appreciate the food and service. 10% to 20% tips is required which I make sure to leave it for the servers. I have also noticed no matter how much pain in the neck one could be for Asian Spice servers or the owners, they have always handled them in positive and calm manner without insulting the customer. All the server knows what they are doing, takes responsibilities for their actions and corrects them when mistake are made. All the server explains food in detail and makes it sound very appetizing. They are always smiling, sharing their own favourites and recomanding just the type of food one need. Over all it's an impressive restaurent. Small, cozy atmosphere, nice Hindi and Punjabi remixes are playing or sometimes our local radio stations. Small cozy booths for four and chinese zodiac is popping out from the glass covered table. One must visit to understand what I'm talking about.
So it was a rainy day and I was a bit under the weather...like figuratively...so I was in the mood for soup and I stopped by for some and it was great soup! They have this little thing on the table, like that pickle liquid that you can add. It tasted great with that! now I'm hooked on it. Garlic Chicken was aright too.
Ive been to Asian spice lots of time, but the service has never been this great. after the new management the food and service is 10 times better. I encourage everybody to eat there. for sure I will be going back. my son eats there everyday for lunch the student meal is only 5 dollars. Cantonese noodles, shredded chicken and chilli fish are the best. chicken sweet corn soup is one of my favorite soups. if you don't believe me stop by and try yourself, I wish all the best to new management.
