We haven't been there for quite a while, and we were reminded why. We ordered take out fish dish and got peppers and onions with very few thin slices of fish (about 5% of the dish). We also ordered special foo yung and they should have called it bean sprouts foo yung instead. The containers are big, but when you open it, it's only half filled. Never again.
We visited this restaurant in January of 2010 and were very surprised with the quality of dishes and therfore returned on March 6-2010. What a great disappointment. We ordered rogan jost chicken from the menue. What we were served was no where near it. It was a tasteless, brown meat with smelly curry sauce. When asked why such a difference we were told that it is under an new management now. All this goes to prove that new management is perhaps worse for customers. Extremely disaapointing and now i am growing weary of Indian and Pakistani restaurants in Metro Vancouver. There is no consistency at all.
Been here a couple of times. Wings are pretty good. Not too sure if they still have the cheap wings every day the Canucks play! Had their 2 dollar Sunday breakfast(11am-1pm)the morning the Men won the Gold hockey game and it was a steal at the price(2 Eggs/2 Bacon/Hashbrowns/Toast). Service is on the slow side but NOT painfully slow. The waitresses seem like they are barely old enough to work in a pub so you end up getting eye candy and not that great of service. The flat panel TV's over the bar should be replaced as their picture quality is crap compared to the other TV's in the joint.
I been their 2 times, once when they were just opened. Ordered Bengali Fish Curry, it was good not great... nothing special or different from other types of Fish curries. Also ordered Tandoori Chicken, this was surprise. It end up been the best tandoori chicken that I have tasted so far, it is juicy. But when I went back 2nd time it was good, less juicy as it got so busy I had to wait over 1 hr even after I placed the order over the phone ahead of my visit. Very clean cooking, they cook in front of you. I noticed word of mouth made them really busy place now, if you want really good food, try ordering when they are less busy with orders like weekdays or during daytime. Try calling at least 1-2 hrs ahead & let them know you will pickup 1-2 hrs later so they don't rush your order & cook slowly. Price of some dishes are reasonable, others are expensive.
I hope if someone from Bengali Fish & Curry team is reading this, please mention your quality of Tandoori Chicken as you did when you guys opened up. Keep it juicy & well marinated so we keep coming back for more.
This place has changed ownership or it's under new management. The original owners tend to open up new restaurants in other locations such as Vancouver.
Now the restaurant is all young faces as servers and cooks. It tastes close enough to before but not as good. Before it was super yummy, it used to be one of the top restaurants for Indian food in Surrey.
We always get the shrimp biryani here, it's delicious and the portions are large. I like that they put red and green peppers in it and it's not swimming in to much grease.
Like the other reviewer I was puzzled by the server, as they didn't ask how spicy we wanted it either.
Also when the dish came it was just biryani, with no accompanying yogurt or mint sauce or small complimentary salad of sliced onions, slices of radish, tomato's or fresh chili's.
When we asked we were just told they had to be ordered off the menu. That seemed odd as those little extra's are usually included.
Their vegetarian dishes here are very good as well. Now to track down where the original owners of this place have opened up their new restaurant...
We tried Rockwells the other night, as it's Cloverdale location just opened up. We were immediatly greeted by the restaurants hostess and shown to a cozy booth in the lounge area. The bar/grill has an ample amount of televisions, would be a great place to watch a hockey game. Our server was attentive and friendly, food and drinks arrived in a timely manner. Mangodriver Martini was not great, way too much alcohol and not enough flavor, needs some work! My husband had the "Blackened Chicken Club" which he quite enjoyed. I had the "Vegetable Medly on Angel Hair" (Subbed the angel hair for linguini) which was okay, pasta was overcooked, as it usually is when ordering a pasta dish at a bar/grill, nice assortment of veggies though and the garlic cream sauce was decent. Not sure we'd return to Rockwells for dinner again, but would drop by for nachos and a hockey game!
The great thing about this restaurant is they offer Hyderabadi Biryani (although not DUM).
They offer Pakhi biryani (check Wikipedia for details) for about $30 for Family pack. If you like rice or Biryani, you MUST try this. I once even ordered food for a company lunch worth $250. Although they do not deliver, the owner made a delivery for us free of cost...
I hope they drop their price a little bit. Been Indian & expert in Biryani food, I can tell you they are really close to what you will get in India. Order Hyderabadi Biryani [Mutton meat (goat)], and not chicken. If you like hot make sure to ask for extra curry side sauce they goes with it (called Mirchi ka Salan).
Was their today for Lunch... ordered Lunch Thali.
One of the worst waiter service by any Food place... this lady waiter was doing us great favor by bringing us food... lol
Although food was great... but expensive $35 bucks for 2 Thali & 2 soft drinks. If you do not mind poor service for good food try it out, otherwise think twice if you are taking someone special with you.
pho tam is a really nice place to eat as it is close to skytrain station and of course because they have this outstanding pho
i ordered combo with large bowl of rice noodle with tendon and rare beef plus spring roll.it was $8.50
i was so satisfied
the spring roll was a bit oily but so yummy with pork and veggie inside.plus their sauce gives it a huge kick.
also the pho,it has TONS of meat ,it is like endless.i am serious.
the quality of the beef was outstanding, and delicious.
but the main part for me is the broth itself, it tastes like heaven.
the place was a bit dirty and not as good, so does the service,it was pretty decent. however i came for the pho,so who cares really?
overall really nice place to eat pho with good prices as well.
deserves to be tried out
Tried this place last Friday after going past it on the bus for years. The interior is nice enough, tile floors and mood lighting. It was pretty busy on a Friday night which was nice to see. We ordered the chicken vindaloo, mutter paneer (peas and cheese), rice, naan and a sweet lassi. Service was excellent and our food arrived within 20 minutes of ordering. The vindaloo was great, filled with chicken and onions and no potato filler which I've encountered before. The matter paneer was also among the best I've had. The basmati rice is $3.50 which I thought was a bit expensive but you do get a generous helping garnished with fresh cilantro. We even got a complimentary gulab jamun to finish off the meal which, if you've ever had these syrup soaked dough balls, is more than enough dessert. I will definitely be back.
We found that the lamb biriyani was too hot, we have had biriyanis in other indian restaurants, but this was the worst, bland no taste just hot. I had my stomach burn until the next morning. The person who took the order did not ask us whether we wanted mild, medium or hot, she just brought an extremely hot biriyani with tons of chilli powder. When we asked for Bhaturas, they said they dont make it. Bhaturas or puris are served in every other indian restaurant in Surrey. We thought this was not so Indian after all. Not worth the price, there were only a few people there on a weekend afternoon, which speaks for the quality of food.
We went here for a late lunch. The place always is busy, so we thought we would try it, as it was nearly 2pm, (no wait for a table). Very nice decor when we got in there, family oriented. We had a choice of where to sit, and went with the front room, very nice & bright on a sunny day. Mom had the smoked salmon bennie, I tried the mexi burger. Food was very tasty, fresh, and home-made. The pan fries were a nice change from french fries. Mom really enjoyed her dish which also came with the pan fries. Service was very good. Bread & buns are baked at their bakery & cheese shop next door, also worth a stop. Will definately go back to try something else.
Anastasia's has been around for years I remember when it was called Dennio's sp?
I also remember the food being better,I mean the pasta was all right, not super but alright. service wasn't very good but why should it be.looking at the menu I noticed gratuities included in the price, don't any of these Manager/Owner types know that TIPS means (To Insure Prompt Service) it's way of expressing gratitude for service and should dealt out accordingly if you get bad service the tip should reflect that. It's not a way for cheap people making you pay their staff higher wages. I could understand it for large groups. but not for two people.I won't go back.
I tend to be anemic, and instead of just relying on iron pills I like to get food sources of iron. Unfortunately like many people I hate chicken livers. Nando's is the one place I can have them. They come in their peri-peri dressing and the taste of the livers are overwhelmed by the spicyness. The prices for their liver has crept up over the years from $4 to the current $7 for the same small container purchase unfortunately. I recommend getting these if you are in a group to share, it's not the best to eat all at once by yourself, liver is quite rich. Also it's served with one bun, but more like two buns are needed. I like Nando's overall, their spring mix salad with pumpkin seeds is nice, as are their new veggies. I also like that they offer the hummus dip. Of course the star of Nando's is their flame-grilled chicken. Recommended. It's sort of a fast food type place with wholesome food. I miss Toronto as there were lots of authentic Portugeuse owned mom and pop shops selling Portugeuse flame grilled chicken at competitive prices.
As the title says, I have reviewed this place not too long ago and then it was great. I went back the other day to have another wonderful experience.....and no. Apparently, there is another owner..another chef...so i gave it another whirl..hoping not much had changed. Well, the food ...i think it was food...over priced crap. The new owner, an angry looking man who doesn't do all too much bit sit and watch others work. The only saving grace we had was our server, nadine (i hope i remembered her name)..was nice and very helpful when it came to all of our questions. Very professional indeed...even when I asked her bluntly about the sudden change of owners and chef..she kept her composure and never bad mouthed her "boss"..It is too bad the chef is gone, that guy really seemed to have a love or passion for the food...now it just seems like slapping it on a plate...too bad I guess if we are in cloverdale again, rustys will be our bar of choice.
There have been complaints about the decrease in menu size, but if the food is getting better and doesn't take an hour without a HUGE increase in price isn't that an improvement?
I keep trying this place, and seem to have a better experience every time. Good job management! I love the pizza, which is 1/2 price on sundays with an pint of the white or lager for 3.50. The fries are an absolute must. The service is still my turning point if I'm deciding between places since I have not had a good server yet. If I did I would make sure to have them again, and only go when they are working. But alas, last time I went me and my platonic friend on valentines day before checking out the surrey pavillion we only waited at the door for a few minutes, and our server after we sat down for about 5-10 minutes, but she did seem busy with a large party so it's forgivable. They do need a regular host to tell the servers that they have a table, and maybe a bartender for if you want to sit at the bar.
BTW there was a baby crawling on the bar. management why would you allow this? the lounge area is supposed to be adults, hence why we go.....
My mother and I was just noticing the last review and I do have to agree with this person. I myself am not a big fan of Chinese food but my mother is so we agree to agree on the location. She gets her combo #1 all the time and I have to ask the lady what she does have available. She is very friendly and laughs as you speak to her but it is very unprofessional to tell your customers that you do not usually keep everything that is listed on your Canadian dishes at hand because they are not ordered that often. I know its probable cost that is of concern but if you are gonna list it make sure you do have it on hand for when the one person who does commonly order it can actually have what they wanted and not have to settle for what is available. Service is good I do also agree on slow days but I have been there for a year now as a customer due to my mother and when it is busy they could use a waitress that will help make sure service goes smooth.
My family and I love this restaurant and have been going there for years. It is small but the food is amazing and the service is really good. Everyone is very friendly and you don't get rude waitresses serving you here. Its like dining with friends :) I especially love the ALL YOU CAN EAT which is Sunday,Monday,Tuesday,Wednesdays from like 2 or 3 until 7pm. They quality is very good and you do get great size portions even for all you can eat. I have tried a few other fish n chip places and usually am not satisfied because of greasy or small portion fish but I must say that is not an issue here. They are a bit high priced on the regular days that are not all you can eat but for the price you pay on those days you seem to get much fuller the portions do get bigger and the dinners are enough to have you stuffed. If you havent tried it you must go and try it..My family of 4 can eat there on all you can eat days and spend just $10 more than we would if we all got a meal at McDonalds so must say I love their prizes.
We ate here during lunch, at that time there were some people but not very many. The interior was very casual, not the usual fancy Chinese decor but clean none the less. The store has many windows, but the view is only of the parking lot. The seats are very spacious and comfy, it even has arm-rests.
The menu here has a lot of variety, but very vague with descriptions. Lots to choose from either Chinese or Canadian food (burgers, sandwiches, etc). There were also a few hot pot selections. Prices vary from around $7-12 but the servings are very generous, you can order one dish to share between two people. The food itself is delicious, and prepared quickly. Some dishes will be served on a sizzling plate. The only thing is tea costs about $1 a pot, which is uncommon for Chinese restaurants.
Our server was very polite, checked in to see how we were doing every once in a while, and kind enough to pack our left-overs for us. The bill came with fortune cookies =)
If you're looking for a good Chinese restaurant in the area, this is it.
This place is extreme on two counts: the proprietor and the sandwiches. Otherwise it would be an ordinary delicatessen: a meat and cheese counter and a few small specialty grocery items.
While I was there, the proprietor kept up a steady monologue of crudeness and explicit sexual commentary as he made sandwiches. He interacted with each customer, trying to push buttons to see what kind of reaction he could get, and he seemed to love it when the customers played along. There was no anger or hatred in his words; he's just an x-rated comedian. Individual tastes will vary as to whether one finds his shtick funny or grating. I give the ambiance a 3, meaning that for some it will be a 5 and for others a 1.
As for service, it is also either a 1 or a 5. On the one hand, he never actually asked what kind of sandwich I wanted. After I chose my bread he just kept pulling out meats and saying that he'd put some of this on it too. He asked whether I wanted hot sauce, and when I said that I wanted it on just one of my two sandwiches, he decided to put it on both. On the other hand, he put much less of it on mine than he did for another customer who said that she wanted some, so he was paying *some* attention to preferences. Finally when he handed me my sandwiches he also gave me a chocolate bar ("Give this to your wife, and give her a French kiss on my behalf"). I will note that he washed his hands before starting every new customer's order. Only his mind is dirty...
Finally, for the food. The sandwiches are on wide, foot-long sub bread. He put 4 different meats on my sandwiches, about 5 slices of each. (Compare that to the tiny shavings you get at commercial chains!) There were generous portions of cheese, lettuce (whole leaf), tomatoes, and cucumbers. The end result was MAMMOTH and it cost just $7! Everything was fresh-tasting and the combination of meats was pretty good, even if I didn't get to pick them.
The man does what he wants, has a good time, and takes serious pride in his work. I will gladly make it a point to return sometime.
