Deep Cove Chalet is situated on six acres featuring breathtaking waterfront views. Classic French cuisine is served in a relaxed, professional manner. Choose from a massive wine list that mixes old world and BC selections throughout.
This is a great restaurant with a view to die for - over Deep Cove. It is located amongst some lovely landscaping with beautiful flowers and trees and a small vineyard as you drive in. There is no valet parking. I found necessary to take a constitutional walk in the gardens afterwards to help the digestion.
We had salmon and Coq au Vin and they were both excellent, as they should be. There were 4 choices of fixed price menus but I simply cannot eat that much these days so we decided to choose a la carte. The portions are not large, but we all eat way too much and everything was cooked to perfection - in rich French style. It's a very extensive menu with most main dishes ranging upwards from $30. The menu is on the website so you can see what everything costs so you don't faint in front of your date. There is also an extensive wine list of domestic and imported wines although the waiter did not not really express any strong feelings about the wine I was thinking about. It was, quite frankly, one of the cheaper bottles at $40, so maybe it did not warrant any special effort. There were also half bottles available for $25 and up.
The service was excellent, reasonably casual and unobtrusive. The waiter was there when needed otherwise stayed out of the way. If you want a window table you need to reserve it ahead and you can dine outside, although it was a bit cool on the evening we were there. I thought it might be a bit stuffier than it actually was...there were even a couple of "gents" in shorts - I think resort casual is the best way to dress here. I did not see any enforcement of a minimum dress code which may be a bad thing...:)
The only observation where they might possibly improve is that they refuse to serve salad as a meal. Banish those on a diet - you have to eat more than you want. Frankly, it's not a problem for me, but then I burn it off, but there are many who are trying to watch their weight. There is also an $18 minimum charge per person at lunch to stop those pesky cheapskates from coming.
All in all, an excellent dining experience, although it is certainly more than I want to normally pay and is richer that I would want more than once in a while - but on a beautiful evening - it is almost impossible to beat. I'll go again...on a special occasion.
Menu hasn't changed in 15+ years, prices haven't changed in several years. Classical French country cuisine, cooked and served with absolute perfection. Every summer we visit Sidney by boat specifically to dine here, plus we usually manage to find an excuse to drop in during the Winter. We're "foodies", regularly dining in Seattle and Vancouver with occasional trips to New York and Paris. Quality is on par with the best, selection is classical, not adventurist, and so must not be one of the exclusive top french restaurants in North America; but the quality/cost ration may make it the best value.
This review may be a bit outdated: we had our fantastic, seafood wedding lunch there in 1985 and I have eaten there about 5 times since. Everytime, the decor, the service and the food have been very good. The chef and owner, if he's still there, is classically trained and understands food. His creations are simple yet elegant, with non of that "Feenie-ish" frou-frou, over-the-top pretentiousness. We live in the lower mainland but always attempt to eat there when in Victoria. Near the ferry terminal, in a beautiful spot, overlooking the bay. A lovely chalet, with pretty gardens.
We went there for a nice birthday dinner. Food was AMAZING, Service was AWEFUL. We only received 4 menus even though there were 7 of us, we had to share menus. The server was unengaged and seemed to only care about taking our order and pushing out our food. No personal interaction, no suggestions of wine pairing, no offer to explain items on the menu, etc.
We were the last table that evening. Accidentally, an expensive pair of glasses was left at the table. I called first thing the next morning, before the restaurant opened, to ensure they had them. They claimed they were not found and that they would ask the staff in regards to the missing glasses. I received no reassurance that they had asked staff, and when I persisted I was yelled at by the owner.
Just because you have great food and established customers does not give anyone the right to treat high-paying customers this way. There was no apology and no response from them.
This is my lasting impression and the story I will tell everyone when they ask about the Deep Cove Chalet.....
I'm biased with good reason. I eat here 4 or 5 times a year for special occasions and I have to clearly state that I think it is the best restaurant in Victoria, in terms of food and value for your money. To be clear, I'm certainly not saying it's inexpensive, but you leave feeling that it was money well-spent.
I started with champagne on my last visit with my wife and her family. The Chalet carries one of my non-vintage favourites: Bollinger Special Cuvee. After a bottle of that, we ordered a bottle of Louis Roederer Brut Premier. Both very nice. After that, I kept it cheaper with Wolf Blass Chardonnay and DuBoeuf Beaujolais. That's just what I like to drink, but there is plenty to choose from... literally thousands upon thousands of bottles.
I decided to try some caviar, because I've only had it once before when I was quite young. Beautifully presented and quite tasty on blinis, but unexpectedly filling. Next time, I might ask for crostinis to keep it lighter.
I followed the caviar with a bowl of lobster bisque. The soup was perfectly spiced and very enjoyable. Always a consistent choice.
After the bisque, I enjoyed the Tomato salad. Lightly dressed with olive oil and balsamic. Beautifully presented...
I then shared Lobster Thermidor with my wife. Extremely tasty and the meat was easy to remove. It was the first time I've ever had thermidor and I will certainly order it again.
And for mains, I had filet of beef with red wine sauce. Very tender and tasty without being too huge a serving (I was starting to get full).
Dessert was warm chocolate cake, an espresso, and a Remy Martin. Though quite full, all of this was consumed over 3 or 4 hours, so I didn't feel uncomfortable.
The service is friendly and very professional. The ambiance was very nice and cozy (they've got a real fireplace in the middle of the restaurant). A wonderful evening was had by all! Writing this has made me very, very hungry...
