Richmond Restaurant Reviews

Just Lost Themselves 12 Customers
By relativelygruntled of Vancouver (Fairview) (2 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, June 20, 2013 - 10:30am [Dine in]

One of my coworkers is getting married later in June, and so we decided to all pitch in and take her someplace nice as kind of a work "bachelorette" party. Being that we work so close by, Cactus Club seemed the natural choice. We made a reservation for 15 people (only about 12 came) and went.

We were seated right away, no issues there. The drinks were a little slow, but when you go out with 12 people, you expect a little more of a delay. My issues started with their so-called "gluten-friendly" menu. So many restaurants out there go above and beyond to accommodate gluten intolerance. Cactus Club is not one of them. Who wants chicken teriyaki without the sauce? Or a burger with no bun? Or... and this is the best one: Fish tacos with no tortillas! I ordered the jambalaya rice bowl with no green beans, as this is how the gluten-free menu says to order it. Another celiac at my table ordered a burger with no bun, and a very sad looking thing it was. When I got my order, I was very disappointed. There were two dry little lumps of chicken, three tiny shrimp, and I thought that they didn't put any sausage on it at all, until closer inspection revealed a few tiny shreds of sausage, barely bigger than the brown rice it was served on. The vegetables were obviously from one of those frozen veggie mixes you buy at Safeway. It was bland, and hardly had any flavour.

I wish I could say that my jambalaya was the worst part of the night. However, it was good in comparison with the service we received. One of the servers spilled a large, wine-based beverage onto one of my coworkers and all over the table. Normally, when accidents happen, a simple apology will go a long way. This server not only didn't apologize, she had the utter nerve to get mad at the table for requesting some help from the staff in cleaning up the mess. She literally threw a few paper napkins down in the middle of the table and stalked off in a huff. Meanwhile, red wine and fruit juice was streaming all over the table, falling on the floor and into laps, and soaked the chair my coworker was sitting in. Were it not for her propensity to wear black clothing, her entire outfit would have been ruined. We requested more napkins or a damp cloth or something, and were basically given a sneer, so at this point we asked to speak to the manager. 20 minutes later, someone came out who may have been the manager but never introduced herself as such, which makes me think they just called whoever. Fortunately, this new girl brought a damp cloth and someone with a mop. Still no apology though! My coworker never received an apology, just attitude.

Also, my supervisor did not receive her meal (a burger) when the rest of the food came out, and had to sit for 15 minutes while the rest of us ate. She insisted we start so that our food wouldn't get cold. The reason? The server said "Oh, I forgot about you," and never put her order in.

In summary, the food was bland, the portions were small and overpriced, and the service was abominable. The attitude of this Cactus Club is "We Don't Care" and it shows. Maybe, instead of hiring physically attractive but inexperienced and self-absorbed servers, they should hire people who actually care about providing quality service. Cactus Club has been trying to go upmarket, but they don't realize yet that you can't just raise your prices, shrink your portions, put some fancy curtains up and call yourselves upmarket. Fine dining is about exquisite food and exemplary service, the latter especially. If you expect people to pay, you must provide an experience that makes the customer feel special. I know that 12 of us were made to feel like nothing more than inconveniences and annoyances due to the actions of the staff, and we will not be returning. Not only that, we have already warned others away and will continue to do so. There are too many good restaurants in this area to waste time on Cactus Club, attractive waitresses notwithstanding. If I wanted to see cleavage and butt, I'd go to the beach. I don't need to see it while I eat.

Kisamos Greek Taverna3420 Moncton Street, Richmond
Best Greek in town!

Been to all the major Greek Restaurants in the lower mainland and I would have to say that in terms of taste and quality of the meal, Kisamos is my favorite. Their Kalamari is SO tender and their Roast Lamb is amazing.
Now, being a bit of a food critic, I have had moments at the restaurant where the food quality didn't meet my expectation. But that happens. I don't base my reviews on the bad moments. As for service, its a hit and miss along with the ambiance. Not sure why the service level goes up and down, but the food generally is what I am there for. Otherwise, this is my place to go when I want Greek!

Steveston Seafood House3951 Moncton Street, Richmond
Great wine pairings on set menu
By VJB of abbotsford (171 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, June 16, 2013 - 9:15am [Dine in]

We went to Steveston Seafood for our anniversary last evening. The room could possibly use a bit of updating but it was clean and comfortable. There was nice music playing in the background that was well suited to the room, it was not loud, you could talk to your companion and it just added to the ambiance nicely.

Our server was good, not exceptional but she was very nice. Hot bread was brought to the table very quickly. I decided on the 4 course meal special for $38.00 with wine pairings for an additional $24.00. My husband decided to order off the regular menu and share my appetizer and dessert with me. For an appetizer I decided on the mussels. The wine that was served was a pinot gris. The mussels were supposed to be steamed with tomatoes, wine and garlic. The tomatoes were non existent. The mussels while very tasty were a ridiculously small portion – there were only 7 mussels. I know it’s an appetizer but I’ve never had such a small serving of mussels before. For my next course I had the chowder. It was decent but it had a very starchy texture and it did not have much of a flavor of seafood or fish to it. This was served with a Chardonnay. My husband had the roasted beet salad with pecans and goat cheese. It was very good. For entrees I had halibut with grilled tomatoes, rice and carrots. The halibut was perfectly cooked and very tasty. It was accompanied with a glass of pinot gris. My husband had the miso glazed sablefish. This was the best course of the evening. It was nice and moist and the miso added great flavor to the fish. We shared a dessert of deep apple pie with ice cream. It was very good but it was different as it was not a traditional pie crust. It was more like a thin sponge cake underneath apple slices. Very good but not what I was expecting. The dessert wine served with this was very good as it had a taste of apples. The wine pairings really complemented the food very well. The pairings brought out the flavors of the different courses. All the wines were good BC wines, Red Rooster, Burrowing Owl etc. The total bill with 2 glasses of wine, salad and entrée for my husband and the 4 course dinner with wine pairings for myself was $146.00 with tip. It was good value for the money. The 4 course menu is very good value. With exception of the chowder and the small serving of mussels the food was very good. I would return but I wouldn’t make a special trip to go for dinner.

A true hidden gem. A limited menu but the food is excellent everytime. Easily the best soup I ever had. There is a bit of a wait at lunch as there are lineups at times. Yes its that good. Daily specials do sell out so make sure you arrive early. Never tried it but they offer a three egg bacon breakfast wrap on 2 tortillas for only $5.50 so the prices are very good. They do cater for small and large groups from 5 to 500 or more with long enough notice.

I also go there for the double downs. They are amazingly tasty as well (: Also, they maintain the store clean and sanitary, securing the quality of the foods."

I have been to all the Pajos locations. This one is the best for ambiance.

Had halibut and chips and partner had cod and chips. Unlike at other locations or other visits, the cod was a little better here I think. The Halibut had a few spots missing batter and was just a little soggier than usual. The cod was crispy.

The chips were excellent as usual. All served in a paper cone. Get you condiments first though or you'll have no hands to do it. I have found the halibut at other locations a little better but who cares - it's all good. yay Pajos!

I have been to this restaurant a few times now with family and friends and have noticed each time that someone who seamed to be the managers wife or girlfriend is always there in the lounge and it's extremly unprofessional for the manager to be kissing and touching her while he is on shift and to have her there watching all evening. I have seen this on my way to the bathroom almost each time I have visited this restaurant. The service is excellent, very attentive, very polite and excellent food!! Just the scenery of the public affection between who seamed to be the manager and this woman who is hanging out for hours.
I will still come back for the steak like I said, great food , great service.

I used to go to George's about 6 years ago hated the service and they never have any drinks on hand. But now the service is excellent and food is amazing. I will recommend this to everyone it looks cozy and very homey.
I also tried Kismos just a block away from them and the price is way to high for the service and the food you get its not worth it. I will say to everyone try George's their roast lamb is to dye for.

Disappointing. Not authentic.
By Cat Stevens of Richmond , BC (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, June 4, 2013 - 7:22pm [Take-out]

I was excited when I found out about this place in the Review's "Best of Richmond." I used to travel to Penang every few years with my parents as I have family there, and my favourite thing was the food. So I go online to check out their menu and think to myself, "Hm, this is a tad pricey." But I figure if it's good and they have decent sized portions, it'll be alright.

Well, I ordered my 2 favourite dishes, Char kway teow and Mee goreng, each costing about $11. Indeed their portions are larger than most, each dish could probably feed 2 people with relatively small appetites.

The Char kway teow was extremely bland. It was just flat rice noodles lightly fried with soy sauce and a barely noticeable amount of chilli. But at least it somewhat resembled authentic Char kway teow, which is more than I can say for the Mee goreng.

I honestly can't figure out whether they got my order wrong with the Mee goreng, it was that bad. It's supposed to be thin noodles fried with sweet soy sauce, but what I got was this weird, flat noodles in a soupy sauce. It tasted of disgusting spices that I did not recognize. Had I not payed $11 for this I would have thrown it out.

The only positive thing I can say about Kari House is that if you ask for prawns, you actually get a fair amount of decent sized prawns, not a couple of tiny shrimp. But that's obviously not enough for me to recommend or go back to this place.

Seriously best pizza ever ! We ordered first time there about two years ago when we moved in Richmond. Till then there pizza become our favourite because there food has loads of toppings. They put cheese like no one does. Other pizza places pizza we can count the topping but there is loaded. I love watching them making pizza. They take care of costumer so well, they are busy and we have to wait little longer. They have always offered me free drink while waiting.

I can go again and again to get no 1 pizza in taste and every penny worth.

Decided to check out their new location. Waited ~ 10 mins for the waitress to acknowledge that we were waiting as they were running around looking after customers. We were led to our table of 2 and our orders were taken quickly. The waitress returned after 5 mins with 2 dishes. We looked at them and told her it wasn't what we ordered. Turns out it was for the table 2 tables away. A little while later, my wife's order arrived. We waited for another 10 mins and finally my order was brought out. The waitress was too busy to fill up our teas but was quick to put our bill on our table. I think with their bigger location, they need to hire a few more servers to keep up.

I came here tonight with a friend of mine, for Mmphis BBQ Night $24.95.....sounds good...I mean all you can eat too.

Anyhow, we went in and there seriously was not that much selection (at least not in the meat categor y(ribs, some chicken and that's pretty much it) I went and got some ribs (about 2 or 3) but it was pretty hard to cut so probably just ate 2. ceasar salad, and they have big sized chicken nuggets. I took at total of 6 my first time there and 8 the second ....the food quality really wasn't all that good to be honest, and for $24.95 it really wasn't that much food.....sure it's all you can eat, but will all that MSG crap that they put in thier food it makes you feel full really quickly....I have been to buffets before and get full there too, but this place was beyond ridicoulous.

So in all;

The BBQ ribs sucked (the feature special) the nuggets were good, but probably loaded with MSG so didn't eat all that many (certainly not $24 worth)....cesear salad ok, and of course the soda pop (well can't go wrong with that)

We won't be back.....seriously wish we had gone to Burger King or McDonald's instead

First off if you don't have the discount card don't bother with this place.

Reserved a table for 5 adults and 1 child for 12 noon. We waited 40 minutes because the chubby lady with the glasses at the front decided to let the regulars in first. Ordered food and waited another 30 minutes. How do I know 30? The time is written on the order receipt. Empty containers were not cleared off the table. Based on these things I gave the service a poor rating.

Food and value ties together. They make up the difference on the discount by charging a bit more than other places. Plus they shrunk the portions. Food taste was decent for the hai gow and Sui Mai. The Chinese donut wrap was a tad over oily. 2 dishes came out luke warm.

Ambiance was nice. If you decide to have a wedding here there is unobstructed views. Restaurant is a tad on the smaller side compared to some others in Richmond.

As we were leaving miss chubby gives a frown and rolls her eyes at my mother and mutters some negative remarks. Nice service /sarcasm

Overall I would give this place a pass and look somewhere else for your dimsum craving.

lastly not related to the restaurant. Parking is terrible here. There is a complex on the mckim side you can park at. Street parking meters don't take new coins. Example: I paid $3.75 for 1hr 27min of parking.

I have never been to this restaurant before, even though I always drive pass this place. Until recently, I moved home and this place is just two minutes away from my home. So one day I decided to take my family there for dinner. We were greeted by an enthusiastic waiter who recommended us a lot of dishes. In the end, my family and I ended up ordering a plate of honey garlic chicken wings, the Peking duck wraps and the meat from the duck was turned into fried rice. The honey garlic wings was extremely tasty, the skin was crispy with honey garlic sauce over them. While the Peking duck was also good, the duck's skin was crispy as well. Finally, the shredded duck fried rice was just average. Overall, the food does indeed taste good, with large amount of portion at an affordable price. I will definitely return for more Chinese food!

The waiters ignores people's request, first we ask if there was another menu beside set dinner, and the waitress refused to give it to us, and said she has to ask the manager... She never comes back.... Later, we found the manager, and he gave us another menu... We then asked to pay the bill, one of the manager said there is still desert to serve... We waited for another 10 minutes, " no desert" or the bill... we have to find another waiter and he then later came back for the desert... We then asked to pay the bill, and the waiter take the ticket on our desk and left, and he never came back... We have to ask another waiter to place another request for the bill... And in the end, they insist they need a bigger tip even with this lousy service.
